Top 100 Canadian Albums - new book

I'll be picking up this book for sure!

http://www.gooselane.com/100_albums/

Look no further. Straight from the heart of the music industry comes the ultimate guide to Canadian music, featuring the best albums that Canadian musicians have ever produced.

An unprecedented book, The Top 100 Canadian Albums includes the finest albums in Canadian music history chosen by a blue-ribbon panel. More than 500 singers, songwriters, musicians, producers, columnists, and collectors cast their votes for this first-time-ever poll. Rush’s Neil Peart, Ron Sexsmith, Ed Robertson of the Barenaked Ladies, Holly Cole, Sass Jordan, Ryan Peake of Nickelback, Alan Doyle of Great Big Sea, George Pettit of Alexisonfire, Saturday Night Blues host Holger Peterson, and The Vinyl Café’s Stuart McLean are just a few of the people who voted for their favourite albums. The results span every decade and every genre of music, from the fifties until the first decade of the 21st century, from classical to pop, from heavy metal to hip-hop.

Between the covers, you’ll find the results, from 1 to 100. Along the way, you’ll discover behind-the-scenes stories about the making of the albums and the history of Canadian music, as told by the musicians themselves. Find out how Gordon Lightfoot helped get Blue Rodeo back to Canada. Learn about the song that connects The Guess Who to The Tragically Hip. Meet Simply Saucer, the band that waited 30 years for its album to become a hit. Connect the dots between Don Messer and Music from Big Pink.

Sure to spark debate about what is and isn’t on the list, The Top 100 Canadian Albums is the essential book on Canadian music.

The list of good books on the history of Canadian music is woefully short.
Each of us have our favourites. Mine are books by Greg Godovitz, Dave Bidini and ANYTHING by John Einarson.

Let's face it there's some real stinkaroos out there.

However, let me recommend Bob Mersereau "The Top 100 Canadian Albums" (Goose Lane Editions) that comes out next week.

When I initially heard of the subject I was skeptical. I hate lists of anything. Also lists of music, specifically, are so subjective and so inside at times.

However, after getting a copy of this eye-popping coffee table book yesterday I haven't been able to put it down.

Culled from lists from 600 industry people from all ages, demographics and regions, the book will not satisfy everybody. There will be people--even me--grumbling about this or that album left out.

That aside, what makes this book special is its considerable scope as well as Mersereau's research and interviews with many of the artists of each of the albums. Plus the superb graphics.

As well, there's the novelty of seeing Canadian albums and artists featured in a world-class context.

Sure we'll all argue about what should be there but let's celebrate when something is so well done.

Sounds like a great book! So glad to know about it! And one of my favorite albums is #1  And boy do I miss my HARVEST album :( I'm still mad at my sister about the 'mishap' with HARVEST.

Apparently, she loaned it out to a girl in the neighborhood without my permission. I must have called that girl everyday for 3 weeks to try to get my album back. FINALLY I got it! But when I took the record out, instead of HARVEST...in it's place was "Nadia's Theme"!!!

What a cruel prank to play on a Neil Young fan! And I never did get the record back but still, I held on to the album cover and may even still have it.

A couple of years later, my history class was preparing a time capsule. On my way out that morning, I grabbed my sister's Frampton Comes Alive album. She used to give me such a hard time when I would ask to borrow it! Oh well!

Article in today's 'Toronto Star' newspaper on the top 100 Canadian albums.
Lots of fine deserving talent there for sure but I'm a bit disappointed that although he makes the list 5 times, not one of Gord's albums makes the top 20.
Incidentally, Neil Young's monumental 'Harvest' was voted the number one album.

I believe the same people published the Top 100 Albums of all time, and I couldn't believe Gord didn't make it on that list at all. To quote Butch Cassidy, "Who are those guys?"

In today's Star are a number of reader's comments including this pithy one:-
"Who gets to make these decisions anyway? Gordon Lightfoot is not even in the Top 20 listing! But Leonard Cohen is? He's not even a singer. Get the wax removed, folks. Lightfoot's 1970 album Sit Down Young Stranger is one of the best Canadian albums ever. Never mind the financially successful (above and below the border) 1973 Sundown. Let's recognize those Canadians that deserve to be recognized."

If I perceive correctly, the albums were chosen based on the opinions of a panel of Canadian music luminaries, which, apparently and by chance, did not contain a sufficient number of Gord aficianados. I don't happen to think that Neil Young is much of a singer either.

Well I guess we can only expect as much from a 'coffee table' book. And a little contraversy only serves to sell more copies. Anybody here ever read Mondo Canuck [1996]? I passed the copy I had along to my son, but had scanned the pages pertaining to GL - attached here, not in order and don't know if they'll be readable. It's a synopsis of Canadian performers, not just music.

I agree with Paul, that Neil Young isn't much of a singer, though he has sang very, very much. His style, quality of voice is distinct, and is why I like it. He's an excellent musician, songwriter, performer. Lightfoot's voice is without a question, far superior.

And Cohen is an excellent composer -so isn't Lightfoot. I hesitate to compare their works.

Thank's for sharing those great pix, podunklander. I really like the B&W with his 12 string, and young girls around him. ;) :)
