The list of good books on the history of Canadian music is woefully short.
Each of us have our favourites. Mine are books by Greg Godovitz, Dave Bidini and ANYTHING by John Einarson.

Let's face it there's some real stinkaroos out there.

However, let me recommend Bob Mersereau "The Top 100 Canadian Albums" (Goose Lane Editions) that comes out next week.

When I initially heard of the subject I was skeptical. I hate lists of anything. Also lists of music, specifically, are so subjective and so inside at times.

However, after getting a copy of this eye-popping coffee table book yesterday I haven't been able to put it down.

Culled from lists from 600 industry people from all ages, demographics and regions, the book will not satisfy everybody. There will be people--even me--grumbling about this or that album left out.

That aside, what makes this book special is its considerable scope as well as Mersereau's research and interviews with many of the artists of each of the albums. Plus the superb graphics.

As well, there's the novelty of seeing Canadian albums and artists featured in a world-class context.

Sure we'll all argue about what should be there but let's celebrate when something is so well done.
