'Bout time to marry one thread with another ...

What was your first LP ? .... when you had the worn out notes and a mountain of coins, the bravado to speak in a voice independent of parents and / or in concert with your friends before or after they had their copy .... dare to buy that #1 or travel your own road to the undiscovered country of someone new but with whom you connected ?

To sing with an abandon that spoke of your freedom as much as it did of your unknown direction.

What was your first album ?

When I'd saved the princely sum of $5 (an eternity in monies for a self enfored "servitude") I found my freedom in "Bridge over Troubled Water".

I'd love to hear yours ....

My first album was, "Did She Mention MY Name" by Gordon Lightfoot. Before that it had always been 45 singles. From different artists mostly, The Beatles, and Glen Campbell.


I bought the LP to have the only Lightfoot song I knew at the time, 'Black Day In July.' That's the story in complete. The rest is history... JJ. :)

I think one of my firsts was Magical Mystery Tour - The Beatles... love that album...

I saved for an eternity for it ....

For me it was Glen Campbell's "Gentle On My Mind" album. There's just something about that song.....and its relevance has grown throughout the years, rather than diminish. It was quite a departure from the Lawrence Welk, Mitch Miller music that my mother played (although she did have a Johnny Cash album in there).

OK to combine this reply with an intended reply to another topic on "my favo(u)rite artist before Gord"
(or whatever it was) I well recall those heady days back in 1958 when us pop music fands at school in England discovered that a local couple having splashed out on an early new-fangled reel to reel tape recorder (possibly a Grundig TK20; see pictures at:-

had taped their extensive and fragile large black 12 inch 78s and were selling them off.My then favo(u)rite artist (until I discovered our poet emeritus in 1966) was the late great Buddy Holly and I bought a number of his hits on 78.(I now have no idea what happenned to them mostly broken I expect).In late 1959 fresh out of school and having commenced my apprenticeship at Rolls-Royce Limited in Derby (that's Dar-bee) I was able to afford the then 35 shillings (say US$3.00 in today's money) to buy my first ever LP:-

As Mr Moorcraft says:-

I don't recall ever seeing a pic of Buddy Holly without glasses....interestng.

it is admittedly a rare picture but I have 2 cherished copies of the vinyl and can assure you that they contain genuine Holly standards like Peggy Sue, Everyday, Rave On and the one that the Beatles made a remarkably close tribute cover of "Words Of Love"
and they are 100% Buddy
Hoewever that is quite possibly the only photograph ever published showing Buddy glassless

Jees, that Grundig TK 20 looks good. Wish I had one in good working order, I have some old reel to reel tapes that I wouldn't mind listening to. It's been 25 years at least since I listen to them.

Shadows-I only had GGI at the time, a gift from a friend. In the record store, I stood amazed at all the CDs to choose from, but in the end, went with Lightfoot's newest offering...and since it was 1982...and that was the start of a beautiful departure...

The first LP I ever bought with my own money was Elvis Presley's "Blue Hawaii." Saved money from my paper route and I was eleven years old at the time (1962). Good topic!

I received many LPs as gifts, but the first ones that I bought with my own money were "Meet The Beatles" and Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit In The Sky" - 50 cents each at a neighbor's garage sale when I was 8 (1970)

First LP was Sit Down Young Stranger. I had finally babysat enough and convinced my mother to take me with her to town. I had no idea who Gord was at the time, but I didn't want to tell my mother that. It was an interesting record cover.

If you're talking rock and roll,then my first in 1979 would be "Sessions Records:40 Golden Hits". I've talke of this before but,overal,that 3 record set is the one. Lots of great #1 hits and top tens from the 1950s to (1 song from 1971).

For "kiddie" LPs,it would be,"Toys R'Us presents,"A Merry Geoffory (Giraffe) Christmas". A spoken record where actorsd play the family of giraffes celebrating the hoidays. :D Geoffrey's the one you see on signs outside the store. Hoo-boy! :D

My first LP of a recording act was,"Donny and Marie:New Season". Loved 'em..really loved Marie! ;)

You might have been a little older than me back then, Char, but I surpassed your 39 years some time ago :)
