Well, I'm a little uncomfortable with making a distinction between "Americans" and "Canadians". Both countries are part of the North American continent, and even though most people associate "America" with the United States, Canada could also call themselves "Americans" (if they wanted to).

By comparison, we tend to refer to Native Americans as "Indians". If that is believable, then how do we refer to those who were born in India? I've heard many terms and none of them are fit to repeat.

As far as American cheese goes, it was probably name so by someone who thought it so bland, it had to come from "America" (or the US).

Perhaps we should start a topic entitled, "What should people from the 50 US states call themselves besides American?" Ustatean sounds like a body part http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif Canadians are Canadians and Mexicans are Mexicans. But some Hawaiians call themselves Hawaiian which makes it SO confusing!
Indians??...I work with three India natives and they refer to our Indians as red-Indians! A native American, to them, is anyone born in the U.S. Confusion reigns!
American cheese could be thought of as bland but it's great to have on hand!

Canada won't be calling itself "America" - just to set that straight. There is a distinction. We are two countries on one continent called North America. Most people here in Canada know "America" generally refers to the U.S.A. "North America" refers to the continent however. Here in Canada, "Indians" are referred to as "Native Canadians" or "First Nations People" or "Aboriginals". It is a distinction given to the people who were here before the white man settled this continent. I am a native of Canada - I was born here but the distinction and term belongs to the tribes of the "Aboriginals" or "First Nations People" I am Canadian.
