The only two songs relating to war I can think of are " Drink Yer Glasses Empty" and "Protocol"

Don't forget "The Patriot's Dream". GL once remarked that he didn't consider this a protest song but IMHO it is a brilliant commentary on the futility of war.

I'm not sure that an espionage topic exactly fits with war songs. The first thought that came into my mind is that someone has confused Gord with that old hit of the 60s: Secret Agent Man. By the way, picking up the thread of another old topic...mistaken song lyrics...does anyone else swear that they were singing "Secret Asian Man" and not Agent??? Ok, I digress...back to GL.

Hmm..now that I think about it...Johnny Rivers, I believe, originated "Secret Agent Man." But didn't The Guess Who do a cover of that song? And The Guess Who had their tribute song to Gordon Lightfoot? Could this be the connection, Gwen? Also Burton Cummings - lead singer of TGW - had a solo career and did a parody of GL singing Maggie May in which he sounded almost like a dead ringer for Gord. Again, could this be what you're thinking of? I don't know if Cummings ever did Secret Agent Man solo, or any other espionage-like song...but possible.

Well, it seems that all of Gords' fans that have answered here, have the same funny sense of humor that leads us to love the catchy side of Gord music. And truly I had no relative aspect to go back to in this topic, but, all of you seem so much more aware of all of Gords' music that I wandered... I mean "Affair on 8th Avenue" had that clandestine quality to it, or was I real wrong about that too?

Just out of curiosity, why the Rosenbergs and the subject of conspiracy to commit espionage? (which actually would have been prosecuted as treason if they confessed or if there had been more than one witness against them)

Really Gords' music has covered so many aspects of our modern lives; environmental, love, war, all of the elements of our maddening society. The only thing left out would be a secret agent kind of encounter. So I thought perhaps there really was this side of Gord and I missed it! The cowboy movies I have never seen and find it hard to believe...so, why not beleive that I missed this other element of Gord as well? Just musing more than anything else, but, trust me, if anyone could have missed these things, it definitely could have been me!lol
The specific Rosenberg connection had no influence other than a class at school recently that rekindled the idea...

Since you mentioned Burton Cummings, maybe you can help me with a question about him? I remember a little of his solo career...I guess it was the early 80's and I remember him singing a very nice song that was played on the radio...I think it was a love song, but I don't remember. Anyway, I wish I could find the song and I have nothing to go on...would you know the names of the songs sung by Burton Cummings during his solo days, or where I could find info???

Also, what is the name of the Gordon Lightfoot tribute song by the Guess Who?

Burton Cummings has a number of albums done as a solo since 1976 (recently reissued in the late 1990s). Albums include the self-titled Burton Cummings, My Own Way to Rock, Dream of a Child, Woman Love, and Up Close and Alone (where the Maggie May song can be found).
The song "Lightfoot" is on the Wheatfield Soul album from 1968.

It was a solo song played on the radio...I remember the DJ saying that it was Burton Cummings. I will check out the Burton Cummings link, Brian 57...thanks. Maybe there will be sound clips...I will know the song if I hear it!

Stand Tall was his biggest solo hit and the only one I can remember - good luck in your search, Oma!

Burton puts on a hell of a show. I've seen him since way back when he went out on his own and just a few years ago on his tour when it was just him and the keyboard. awesome entertainer. bit of a blowhard but lots of fun.
