I appreciate this will probably have been covered in times previous but I'd be interested in an update of the views of forum members with regard to what you consider as the best cover version of any one of Gord's songs. For me, it's Glen Campbell's "The Last Time I Saw Her".

Ron Sexsmith- Drifters (BEAUTIFUL cd-trib.LP)
Jory Nash- Mother of A Miner's Child Aengus Finnan - Miguel Rick Fines - Boss Man MadViolet - Poor Little Alison and all of the performers at the Lightfoot Tribute Shows - amazing covers and fabulus shows! I love Elvis' version of "For Lovin' Me". I Have this to thank for actually getting me into Gord!

It's Drifters for me. I heard Ron's version before Gord's, as I got Painter late.

With the possible exception of Elvis' "Early Morning Rain" and Sarah McLachlan's,"Song For A Winter's Night", no one in my opinion has ever really done a "great" cover version.
I can even say that after buying the "Tribute" CD. The covers are good but not "great". |
My favourite is probably lesser known - Glen Campbell's version of " Wherefore and Why "...
Like so many of Gordon's songs I heard it first from someone else - in this case the Rhinestone Cowboy.... |
EMR by EP has to be my favorite.
Bill :) and, of course, every one that Bob Dylan has done !!!! [ September 14, 2005, 05:11: Message edited by: BILLW ] |
Judy Collins' "Early Morning Rain" - from "Fifth Album (1965) which had me searching out this Gordon Lightfoot fella. And the rest, as they say, is history. Great cuts on that album:
1. Pack Up Your Sorrows 2. Coming Of The Roads, The 3. So Early, Early In The Spring 4. Tomorrow Is A Long Time 5. Daddy You've Been On My Mind 6. Thirsty Boots 7. Mr. Tambourine Man 8. Lord Gregory 9. In The Heat Of The Summer 10. Early Morning Rain 11. Carry It On 12. It Isn't Nice Pack Up Your Sorrows, Tomorrow Is A Long Time, and Thirsty Boots are my other favorite cuts. |

Before we leave this thread, how about our own Cathy's covers? My favorites are Song For A Winter's Night, Heaven Help The Devil and Home From The Forest. Informal recordings are on her web site (see below). Her CD will be released soon. I promise!
PS: As many of you know, Cathy has been sick but I am happy to be able to report that she is now looking forward to going home and getting online again very soon. I sure hope so; my telephone bill will be through the roof until then! |
I Got a great album from ebay called "Mac Wiseman sings Gordon Lightfoot". I'd never heard of him, but found out later that my mother was a fan, and now the CD is in her collection! He does a great version of "The House You Live In". Very different, sort of bluegrass style. Well worth hearing.
