Lightfoot wrote in so many different musical styles, and consequently, his songs encompass so many categories and create diverse feelings and emotions. Rather than just choose a “best” song, why not place his body of work into the perspective of categories or form. He wrote the best poetic lyrics, which were exquisitely coupled with melodies and musical lines, of any contemporary composer of his time. Without question he wrote some of the strongest ballads, love songs, anti-war, country, nature, sea going, historical, working-person, introspective, and family songs, with an elegance and poetry that is unprecedented. Perhaps this is the way to gather thoughts on what is his best and what is most significant to us all. Don’t know for certain, will not a quote a line from a song, but I do propose this idea for the forum. Walls, aka, restless_shadows.

Well,if walls was saying take one og Gordon's songs and put it in music category or stylistic form and say which song was the best in that manner.....
I'd have to say that,"The Way I Feel" and "Message To The Wind" are poetry at it's finest. Along with "Your Love's Return" too http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

Best "Country" like song? No doubt it's "Cotton Jenny". http://www.corfid.com/ubb/wink.gif
For Country Folk/Rock:"End Of All Time".

Straight pop/Top 40:A tie between "Sundown" & "Carefree Highway."

I'd go into moe catgories but my time's about up. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/frown.gif Rats! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Later! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/cool.gif
