Well folks I have finally bought myself an electronic drumset, it's not a toy... sounds like the real thing when plugged into an amp( which I have).... anyway the point of this thread is the following... just because you think Barry Keane is easy to follow don't make it so http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I have been practising many of Gord's tunes that involve drums, and I tell ya Barry makes it look easy.... cuz some of it IS NOT! LOL

I think The Edmund Fitzgerald is the easiest to master, just a basic beat with a few fills near the end.

now you'll be able to reproduce all the sounds from East of midnight!

i always thjought the picking patters on the guitars were easy to pick up, but they aren't

Speaking as a Mom whose son tried playing I hope you practice when nobody is home. You know so much about all Gord's songs I have a feeling that you will be a Barry Keane "mini me" in no time.

Actually this set has headphones to it http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif I've been listening to Gord's music for 30 some odd years I have learned most of it by osmosis.

Always have had this warped fantasy of having to rush up on the stage and replace Barry if he ever got sick LOL.

I don't know of too many people around my neck of the woods who are rabid Lightfoot fans like myself, cuz it would be neat if I could showcase my skills in public instead of doing it in just my apartment http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

My oldest son decided at age 15 to take up drumming, and I made a deal with a guy at work who wanted an acoustic guitar. I actually traded an old Harmony acoustic that wasn't worth the plywood it was made out of for a Ludwig Vista-Lite drumset. We've found out since that these Vista-Lites are quite rare, and are worth a little bit of money. I've seen identical sets online that sell for $1200. Matt is going to send his tom away and have a crack repaired and put new hoops on it. It's quite a nice drumset.
Anyway, I played drums ocassionally in high school jazz band, so I knew a little about it. When we got the drumset, we set it up in his bedroom and I showed him the basic rhythms I knew. In a matter of about 10 minutes, he was playing them and now is a very good drummer. I knew he had talent, so I learned to put up with the annoyance of having pictures fall off the wall, having my dishes dance around in the cupboards, seeing my windows bow in and out every time he hit the bass drum. You learn to block it out somehow.
And luckily, my closest neighbor was an 80 year old guy who was pretty deaf. I doubt he could hear Matt's drumming, but I bet he could feel the rhythm. At least he was decent about it and didn't call the cops!
If I had it to do over again, I'd definitely invest in an electronic set for him. He now has an apartment in Portland and can't play his drumset, so he's taken up guitar and has become a pretty good player, but he keeps mentioning that he misses playing his drums. Are these electronic sets quite expensive, Gord? Could Santa afford to get Matt a set for Christmas? Remember, Santa's saving's account is pretty sorry looking at the moment!

This cost me about $350 Canadian with taxes...

Oh, I see. It's a big, oversized electronic drum pad. I was picturing it as being one that is set up like a drumset. I've seen them before and the prices are outrageous. Maybe something like this would keep him amused for awhile.
I've also seen a practice set that looks similar to a full electronic drumset, minus the electronics. I don't think he'd like that, though, because it doesn't make enough noise.

Well trust me this baby when plugged into an amp is very loud! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif My dad was here tonight and I gave him a demo.... um I played More Than a Feeling by Boston on it... it was funny everytime I hit the bass drum pedal the cats scattered everywhere.

On a side note, this unit doesn't replicate everything an acoustic set can do, the snare and hi hat kinda suck on the electric set, can't really do all the fancy stick work. Next year I'm getting an acoustic set.

Already have the go ahead from the landlord http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif btw she's a musician as well

Gord
Thanks for the kind words and good luck with that electronic kit.

OK...question of the night: Is the above post from the "real" BK, or just somebody playing with Gord's emotions?
