We had the hardest one to sing. What would be your easiest one to sing? :)

I find it relatively easy to sing along with "Walls". And I love to sing along on that one; especially the last lyrics where he sings about not being ashamed of wearing out his old grey socks and finding some yarn to sew them up again... 'cause that's what socks are for! :D
|
A great one indeed, Jennifer. I myself have been trying to think of one, but there are so many, it's kind of difficult. :)
"Did She Mention My Name?" :) |
Since Gordon Lightfoot & I are "almost" the same range, except for that vibrato,I find a lot of his songs to be fairly easy on my vocal chords. :)
If You Could Read My Mind, Sundown, Carefree Highway, Rainy Day People, (if I could memorize the lyrics)--> "Wreck", The Circle Is Small(I Can See It In Your Eyes '78), Baby Step Back, Rainbow Trout, Shadows, Forgive Me Lord, I'll Tag Along, Cotton Jenny, End Of All Time, The Pony Man and quite a # of his 60s. Too many to list really. ;) |
I'd Do It Again would be pretty easy, if you could get pass the embarassment. ;)
|
I'd Do It Again is a great song!
|
Cotton Jenny is easy for me, except that I first heard it (as a child) as Anne Murray's version, so I keep wanting to sing her feminized lyrics. Probably appropriate, though, since I'm female.

'High and Dry' is another one that is not too hard, and fun to sing along also. I like to sing along to "Softly" too. The only hard part is all the vibrato in that song, I can't quite pull that off. I'm not really *good* at singing anyway, but that doesn't stop me from doing it, much to the dismay of my family and co-workers! LOL  |
Carefree Highway for me. I love that up and down rolling rhythm of the song. I'd love to learn to play it on piano. Hmm...maybe I will.

Haven't had much time to sing my GL songs lately, but The Wreck is always the easiest because i can play the chords and know the lyrics by heart. :)
|
I find The Wreck to be one of the harder songs to sing, due to the length of the song. It becomes very repetitious if you don't add enough emotion to keep the audience interested. Gord definitely has this one figured out. I love watching him perform it.
|
I find Daylight Katy to be pretty easy, but I agree with the observation that many of Gord's songs are in the same basic vocal range (more or less baritone if I'm not mistaken).

For my female voice it's often hard to find my own key to sing along 'with him' but fortunately I can do one of my alltime favorites: "Sit down young stranger". And what delights me most, I can play it also fairly well on guitar :)
Another one would be "Restless" ( except for the quitar playing... ) & "Me and Bobby McGee" ( love that one ) |
Sdys and Restless are two of my favorites too Claudia. When You've found your own key, then that is how it is to be,I'm sure You do them just fine...Though I have not had the time lately, another one I like to work at is Cherokee Bend.

Cathy,
I usually use a capo and try to figure out the best position to accomodate my voice. But in SDYS I can actually play it like Gord, with Capo on second fret. That doesn't happen very often... But the 'trouble' starts, when I just try to sing along in the car...There're a couple of songs where it seems I just can't find my own key. I either end up to low or to high. Probably my voice simply doesn't 'qualify' for some songs of his. At the 7 Springs concert I noticed, that someone behind me had the same problem - unfortunately that didn't stop her from trying... |
Claudia, for what it's worth, I have problems finding my vocal range for SDYS, too. Gord's version is quite low, even for his vocal range.
I like the song when he sings it, but it's another of those very repetitious songs, like Wreck. I love playing it, if there's man around that can do the singing. Derek Kidd and I did SDYS at one of Val's house conerts, when we opened for Dave Mallett. The audience was 1/2 Mallett fans, 1/2 Lightfoot fans, some of which are fans of both performers. The song went over okay, but nothing like Gord's more well known songs. |
