In the last verse of Too Late For Prayin' Gord sings:

Guess we've all got problems of our own to bear
Yet still we share
Tomorrow
Could get better than today

Does "tomorrow" finish the phrase " Yet still we share ....tomorrow" or does it begin the phrase " tomorrow....could get better than today"?

My personal interpetation is that it does both; "tomorrow" is used to end and begin two different thoughts or ideas. I find it a subtle and beautiful little lyrical trick.
I think I may have heard this used in other songs before. Maybe this is some type of literary device and has a name.

He also does it earlier in the song but with lesser effect:
But then she must
They tell us
Wisemen tell us
Its too late

were "wisemen tell us" is the phrase that begins and ends two different thoughts.

Has anyone else ever noticed this? Does it appear in other GL tunes? Is it a common literary device? Or am all wrong?

Gord likes to play with words like that. That is why he is there and we are here...confused?
Maybe a third cup of coffee will help! lol

Yep, noticed it and enjoyed it.
I learned some of my writing techniques by studying his lyrics.

Hard to believe a great song like,"Too Late For Prayin'" was not an "A" side single!
Did you know Rick, that song is the "B" side of Sundown? http://www.corfid.com/ubb/eek.gif That's the kind of song one wins Grammys with!

If they wanted a flipside, why not one of his unreleased songs? You know something written around that time, like oh...I dunno..."Borderstone"??!! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.corfid.com/ubb/wink.gif (What an ego, huh? http://www.corfid.com/ubb/cool.gif ) Later!
