New topic as the previous "highlights" one was getting long in the tooth
-------Newsgroup highlights week ending April 1st 2005 Ron Jones (who recently debuted on this forum) started a nice thread subject "Lighthead Seniority" by boasting that this year marks 40 since he became a lighthead2toe.(beating me by a couple of years) his thread starts at:- http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...756866b4fdc200 there are now 27 postings to the thread including a very poignant one by Shirley (Hoggard) from OK city As always the link I just gave is to the initial posting that started the thread and after reading it you must click on the "show options" link then select" view thread" you then will see only postings 1 through 10 with the complete thread list in the left hand panel, so after scrolling through the first 10 click on posting 11 to read the next 10 etc Again this past week there is precious little else to draw your attention to on the Newsgroup so instead I will give you a link to a Lightfoot thread on another newsgroup that I found whilst trying to find a thread discussing the meaning of "Minstrel Of The Dawn":- subject Best Gordon Lightfoot Song! starts at:- http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...c1b2be68f4fa41 there were 31 postings to that several make nice reading Now for the weekly commercial The aforementioned Shirley had trouble getting my usual "notlong" chat room link to work so I have made a new one which is:- http://www.johnschatroom.notlong.com which should then redirect you to the required page on my own web site at:- http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfoot/chat that page and the whole chat folder needs considerable revising which I hope to accomplish soon but meanwhile those in the know (and most of last week's chatters know) get by regardless of those links once they have accepted our advice to instll mIRC ------------------ My Gordon Lightfoot webring starts at http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfoot [This message has been edited by johnfowles (edited April 01, 2005).] |
Thanks, John.
As I said in my e-mail, I'm just a piano guy, so I'll probably blow it. But I plan to give it a go next Friday. Looking forward to hearing from you. The Rez ------------------ It was a Beautiful Rainbow A Beautiful Time in my Life A Thing to Share A Time to Care To Be Alive |
To save time I will be posting this as is on both the Newsgroup and corfid
Highlights of the past week Both the Newsgroup and corfid have featured items on pre-concert gatherings for the very shortly occurring Southern California tour For any corfid readers going to El Cajon who have not seen it Doug Kirk a.k.a. plumguru2 is offering a get together at his home (in Santee) before the concert on Friday April 22nd. http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...357ce4aaff70cf Doug said:- "I'm hoping to host a small gathering of Lightfoot fans at my home that evening, 4/22/05 beginning around 5 PM. If you'd like to attend please contact me at plumbg...@cox.net for the address by 4/17. That should give us adequate time to get every thing in order at the homestead." I am not sure what the ...2cox.net is all about as Doug is a long time AOLer at plumguru2.aol.com from where he seems to have sent the NG posting. Meanwhile there has been quite a discussion on corfid about meeting for a meal before the next evening's concert at Cerritos. this seems to have been settled as at Mimi's together with a pre concert gathering at as rex "the rez" put it:- "Around the lobby they have tiles signed by the performers who have appeared there. I suggest we meet under the Victor Borga (sic) signature tile (no one else will.) It sounds harder to find a thing like that than it is. Before the show would be great - after too." see:- http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb...c;f=1;t=003002 Another nice topic concerning the meaning of "The Minstrel of The Dawn" has produced some very learned responses at:- http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb...;f=1;t=003086a A member calling himself "stingray" who takes his name from a post-Fender bass guitar asked if Rick Haynes played one too and a response confirmed this see:- http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb...c;f=1;t=003095 By the way anybody who has not looked at corfid this last week will get a shock as Florian has considerably updated it to the later UBB version which now improves the topic listing and adds several features such as a searchable members list message leaving etc -------------------------------------------------- chat room advert I still have started my revisions to my chat room description page let alone completed it but as one chatter had a problem with the mirc system last Friday here is a very basic link to the IRC host (dilexnet.net) supplied browser/Java applet method of entry:- http://www.lightfootchatroom.notlong.com (somebody had already took chatroom.notlong) Just be sure to delete the default "DilexNET-Guest_614" with your own nick before hitting the "chat" button 9.00 PM EST this very evening John Fowles |
Hey John,
I made it to the chat - late, of course. Couldn't figure out how to post my comment. And then . . . Eureka - "Enter" Sheryl was still there, and BillH, and Random7. I we the virgin, so thanks chatty people for waitin' for me to line up my brain w/ my digits. The Rez |
Message board highlights week ending April 15th
the big news at corfid was the unexpectedly revised appearance after founder Florian considerably improved the available features compred to how it has been since he launched it in September 1999 see:- http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...e24483fcb705c3 (in particular an opening presentation showing the topics most ercently posted to in all three forums (general small talk and testforum);adding a searchable members directory; adding UBB instant codes for displaying pictures etc and a leave a message facility (useful for those who have withheld their email addy) One such is another Lighthead from down under "Steve from Sydney" who joins the known three musketeers from Melbourne and I also spotted Gunter from Sydney who posted on the Yahoo fan club board at:- http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group...ub/message/899 I'll be writing an email later to all 6 Aussie fans including Peter T the Newsgroup poster and also Ron Jenkins in NZ's South Island In honour of the mark 2 version I made a revised "notlong" redirecting address:- http://www.corfid.notlong.com see the long topic "New Format" at:- http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb...c;f=1;t=003094 Other corfid highlights include Another overseas fan is "Max from Italy' who announced his intention of coming over for the October New York concert but needed help on how to purchase the ticket:- http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb...c;f=1;t=003108 And here are a few Newsgoup highlights for corfid readers Bru/silverheels started a thread on who was going to Massey at:- http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...002f8bcd637e1c Ron Jones from Vancouver a recent poster here started a thread that discusseed the capos used to create Gord's "drop D" tuning that guitarists here should find interesting http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...5493804f7ad0f9 and that reminds me that a resident of Vancouver Island reported that he would be at the Friday and Saturday Las Vegas concerts shortly http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb...c;f=1;t=003104 Moving smartly along to the commercial break there was a pretty full attendance last week in the chat room. Apparently after Susan and I had to leave the room the prolific corfid poster Rex a.k.a. "the rez" succeeded in getting in. In response to appeals to provide a simpler link I have created this one:- http://www.fridaychatroom.notlong.com that purely opens the IRC server (dilexnet.net) supplied browser Java applet. just change the "guest' name to your preferred nick/real/screenname (no spaces allowed) before clicking the chat button please or get mIRC and use eitherr method for accessing the room as described on my page:- http://www.johnschatroom.notlong.com tonight at 9 PM EST 6 PM PDT John Fowles |
Now let's see where were we.
Oh yes not here to give my weekly reminder about chat or the highlights of the two main message boards (as I see them at least).Actually my dear wife organised what was ostensibly a surprise celebration of our pending anniversaries... fifth wedding and sixth since meeting in the chat room by flying off to SoCal and Las Vegas. We were able to attend 6 of the 7 concerts and had a tremendously fine time meeting old friends making new ones and touring. Yes we drove all the way up the Pacific Coast Highway from San Diego to San Francisco. We had planned an interim stopover at Cambria and before we reached there we just had to visit the hamlet of Harmony (population 18) making a great call at the Harmony Winery http://www.harmonycellars.com/images/PostOffice2.jpg The gentleman who conducted our fine wine tasting was Joe Montross who said that a 1968 GL LA area concert was his first ever concert and he had 10 GL vinyl albums and now he knew of the Harmony CD would like to sell it in their shop I have read Madam Klein's two concert reviews with much admiration also Doug and Ed's Newsgroup postings and Kimberly's very brief Cerritos review and pix here and her contribution to the Newsgroup "Viva Las Vegas" thread with more pix starting at:- http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...17b0cfd2?hl=en and marvelled at the ridiculousness and lack of couth shown by two corfid posters (a "Lakewoodman" and another unwelcome/fibbing unregistered poster) alleging audience walk-outs etc. I have also read Wayne's latest (May) commentary at:- http://www.lightfoot.ca/commay05.htm in which he quoted the four Harmony tracks that Gord sang in Friday's Orleans Casino concert. I think I can claim the credit for that fact. We were fortunate to be able to speak with Gordon after the Thursday show after a lady (I did not hear her voice as English Bru) called Margi had requested her favo(u)rite The Pony Man.I enquired whether he would do Couchiching as it had gone over well in Hamilton last November. He replied that he was unsure that it would be suitable for an American audience (or words to that effect) and proceeded to sing a little of it for us. I then requested my favo(u)rite Harmony song Inspiration Lady which he said might not be easy to do and/or they'd been having trouble with that.Susan chimed in with a request for her "initiation" song (Sit Down Young Stranger) After that Gord at least twice repeated the four requests to make sure he had them all in his mind. Sure enough in Friday's concert he said something like "lots of old friends here with requests.... Margi I've got you covered and John and Susan I have you covered" then later he introduced IL with a "this one's for John and Susan"!!! In due course I hope Susan will write up an extended recounting of our adventures and impressions. (we only lost a couple of bucks in the casinos far too noisy for us). So what has been happening to the Newsgroup and corfid boards in our absence. Obviously a stream of reports and impressions on the various concerts (did nobody actually record the set list for the first (Thursday) Orleans Casino concert?? I recommend to corfid readers a very new (today) Newsgroup thread entitled "What is the saddest Lightfoot song?" which starts at:- http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...de=print&hl=en On corfid "the rez" (Rex) who I met briefly at Cerritos but saw in animated discussion with Doug Kirk has started an excellent topic on "My (Your) Favorite Couplet from Gord" at:- http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb...c;f=1;t=003148 Well All Right time for the commercial... I know a few met in the chat room while we were away,nd I keep forgetting to stress that since the chat room is always there if any other groups or individuals wish to set up a time to chat (especially the 6 antipodean fans in Sydney/Melbourne and New Zealand please do so. the links to get you in are still:- 1.the full explanation with a choice of 4 entry methods at:- http://www.johnschatroom.notlong.com/ or 2. http://www.fridaychatroom.notlong.com/ which redirects you to one of the simple Java applet/browser entry methods whatever way mIRC is the best of course here's hoping for a few newcomers tonight at 9 PM EST 6 PM PDT John Fowles I mean no one no harm [ May 06, 2005, 19:05: Message edited by: johnfowles ] |
John,

sorry for typo. I meant, of course: 'an' English lady.

Hey, don't forget my review, John, unless no mention means you didn't like it.
Was great to see you and Susan, at the shows, but I surely wish we had spent more time together. Kimberly |

Well Not Alright again
After 5 exciting weeks here I am om a Friday faced with deciding whether to try to rewrite my chatroom tutorial or complete a lengthy description of where we have been (San Diego, Los Angeles San Francisco Las Vegas and Toronto if you must ask. and who we met (Gordon and the band an unfortunately silent Lynne Ackerman numerous chatroom corfid and Newsgroup new and old friends) and a few we missed Jimmy Jones Florian Erica/Erkie in particular and any antipodean delegates) I won't single out anyone except to thank Janice profusely for her stirling efforts in Toronto and Susan for taking so much trouble to research our California/Nevada adventure and doing all the driving (900 miles or so) then the return drive to Toronto suffice to say for now that November 2006 cannot come soon enough But.. there is not enough time so a simple chat reminder is all you are going to get today shut up about paving with good intentions will you?! Tonight then at 9PM EST I hope we get a bumper crowd in the chatroom go to:- http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lihghtfoot/chat It is all there including my own site's hosted Java applet and a link to the Internet Relay Chat server's own Java applet plus details of mIRC which is the preffered way to access the channel #gordonlightfootchat John Fowles I heard you talking in your sleep Is there anything that I can do I don't believe we've had a word all day 'Bout anything at all |
"There is no Try - only Do"
Sorry Yoda. Maybe for a Jedi Knight, but as for me - I'll try (again.) Besides, 12 The Hard Way says Yoda can't play piano (maybe Heart and Soul.) The Rez . . . I'm not sayin' I'll be "there," but I'll try. |
