since I don't have memories of hearing Lightfoot on the radio like you did (simply because I am too young to), I heard Sundown for the first time on the radio ever a couple of days ago, and the first time I heard it on the radio, I thought that I was going insane for a moment http://www.corfid.com/ubb/wink.gif because the only Lightfoot song I heard on the radio was the re-mixed Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald (which actually helped me become a fan of the man).
You see, I had bought Sundown before I had EVER heard any of the tunes on the radio. I merely listened to the sound clips, liked the sound clips, and got the album. I thought that that the title track sounded very familiar and maybe subconsciously I heard it before, but as far as I knew, I had never heard the title track before I bought the album. Anyway, so my point is, I heard Sundown on the radio and I said "Oh my god, it's Gordon Lightfoot and it's Sundown!!!" Okay, practically everyone else has heard it on the radio before except me, but for ME, it was my first time hearing the song OTHER than hearing it only on the album! It felt like a big deal to me http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif |
Shazia: You will find that if you are walking around in a shopping mall or department store, that you will hear GL alot. They (the NON-Lighheads) call it elevator music... I call it a necessity of life...One of the top ten things on the list if you were stranded on a tropical island. If an extinction level type of asteroid was about to hit the earth...Gord's Gold should be jettisoned into space in a time capsule, and stored in places where it could one day be found. Whew! A little off track there...sorry. LOL Have you heard most of GL's songs by now? Every album is a treasure. In the past when I bought a new album that I hadn't heard before, most of the songs on them seemed ok to good, but after hearing them a few times ...your hooked. The only song that I never liked was Black Day in July.

What really sucks are the elevator music versions where you spend two minutes going "I know that song, it sounds familiar, what is it?" I heard a player piano type version of IYCRMM once in a store and it drove me nuts trying to figure out what I was listening to.

Sorry I have the misfortune of NOT hearing all of his songs by now. I don't have very much money to buy albums. I have 4 of his albums though and when I am able to get another album it will be Don Quixote, Cold on the Shoulder, and Shadows! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
I would be offended deeply though if someone told me that Gordon Lightfoot's music was elevator music!!! Oh well, they don't know the music like you and I do http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif |
Sad but true: elevator music surpasses the quality of EVERY radio station in Los Angeles. This has to be the worst market for creative programming. I actually look forward to going to a Ross (or other department store) with my wife because I know that I'll be treated to some decent music! And some Lightfoot, to boot!

Shazia: I sent you an email to your hotmail address. If you have mail controls on your hotmail account...it might wind up in your "junk mail" ...so check there for it too. Anyone that tries sending me email to my hotmail, who isnt in my "address book" winds up in my junk mail.
