Hey gang:
Stay with me here.This gets a little bit complicated.The one and only Lightfoot album(yes,I mean vinyl) I ever owned was,"Endless Wire".Prior to that I wasn't really old enough to be working so,I didn't have much money for music.

However,I have always enjoyed G.L's music.So the
question is-if I were to start collecting his music again,which collection of music should I buy?

Please don't suggest"Songbook".In the area where I live it runs about $60.00.I can't really afford to spend that kind of money at one throw.

patybear - you are not alone! I did exactly the same thing and have been kicking myelf ever since.

I guess if you are looking for a "collection" in one album, I would first suggest Gord's Gold. Second to that, I would suggest Gord's Gold II.

Only problem with the GG releases is many songs were re-recorded. I know with the 1st GG releases all the 60s material was redone though the 70s stuff was put on there as is.

Try Shadows. Excellent album.

The perceived wisdom is that every true and avid Lighthead if he/she is like the typical fan here will inexorably
end up getting obsessed and set out on the path of collecting everything they can.
Meanwhile the rest of us sit back with silly envious grins marvelling at the thought of all the wondrous pleasures awaiting
the new collector.
So just as everybody has a different and ever changing list of favo(u)rite songs so too do they have varying recommendations on what to buy next.
For my own part having been in at the beginning almost, buying the first Lightfoot! album in 1967, I never tire of saying that I strongly feel that starting at the beginning of Gord's 20 "original" albums gives the best grounding to appreciate the huge and wondrous repertoire we are so lucky to be able to obtain.
This of course means getting all five of the United Artists albums which include (April Fools hoaxes notwithstanding) the only "official" live audio CD yet issued: the fabulous 1969 Sunday Concert.

One other thing bearing in mind the essential desirabity of catching Gord live at a concert to witness the band's usual faultless on stage performance is to get, in addition to the range of audio CDs, the not overly expensive single Live Video release on either VHS or DVD the very nice Reno Nevada concert recorded in 2000.I hope that helps you plan how to invest your limited resources

The United Artists Collection is a nice set, usually for a nice price too.

I have said elsewhere that the best place to strart is the beginning and go forward. Buy 1966's "Lightfoot" and go in ordeer from there (on vinyl that is.)

On CD,get UA Collection. ;) Then go for the Reprise/WB releases.

I have to agree with Borderstone. It's nice to get the older music and work your way up through his newest releases, because you get to hear how his music evolved over the years. But, in all reality, that probably would kill your pocketbook! If I were in your shoes, I'd probably look for Songbook on Ebay and see what kind of deal you can strike up. I've seen it go for as low as $25.
