On the news this morning was a financial report about amazon.com. I bring this up because it reminded me to go to their site to check on the reissue of the Gord's Gold CD
What reissue I hear you all asking??
well not quite all
Valerie on her truncated "folk music" site http://gordonlightfoot.com
recently added
"In other Lightfoot news, Rhino has reissued Gord's Gold, Lightfoot's 1975 Greatest Hits album which has gone double platinum. This CD was withdrawn in 2002, shortly after the release of Complete Greatest Hits. Unfortunately, Rhino did not take the opportunity to add back the omitted song, Affair On 8th Avenue, nor did they remaster the CD. In my opinion, Rhino has missed a big business opportunity, as I suspect that most Lightfoot fans would buy a remastered and complete Gord's Gold, even though they already have the CD"
After some searching I have concluded that both the Amazon and Rhino websites seem to be ominously disinclined to say anything about this yet unless my eyes deceived me I have seen one copy!
whilst waiting after one of the recent concerts I saw a gent in the row in front of me with an unfamiliar looking CD and it looked to me that the jewel case front insert although largely white had "Gordon Lightfoot" writ upon it and what just might have been a reduced sized facsimile of the familiar original brown Gords Gold artwork.
i now have a sore ankle after kicking myself for nor asking said gent if I could have a look at it. (at the time I assumed it had just gone on sale and would be easily found on amazon for example)
http://www.cdconnection.com also declines to offer this new gem
Of course I could be wrong but perhaps Val can shed some light on this because after some determined googling I found reference to such a mythical reissue only on her site
John Fowles
Incidentally I also checked out the Warner Bros site and discovered
http://www.warnerbrosrecords.com/find.php
where there is a drop down box hopefuly headed
"FIND ARTIST BY NAME"
but strangely Gordon is not included but so no big surprise there!!

Rhino had it listed on their site under "Upcoming" before release as an Oct 4 release but included no details. They don't respond to email, so don't bother trying (I did).

However, the CD is now on sale on several sites other than Amazon that hadn't carried it since it was withdrawn (e.g., Barnes & Noble and Tower), and it describes as did the original GG CD. Barnes & Noble, in fact, comes right and says ... "Repackaged". Just great. It has made the Tower Top 1000, selling about as briskly as it always did. Some fans have seen it in stores and also reported that there is no mention of remastering, no Affair, and the only difference was a minor change to the packaging.

I'm afraid Rhino blew it.

I'm going to buy one of the new 'repackaged' copies of the CD and put my original up. :) It might become a collectors item.

Ok mystery partly solved.I was sure that the CD I spotted had a brown insert (but having been alerted by Val's note to a GG1 reissue my mind and eye was probably prejudiced to seeing the brown facsimile of GG1)
Although in fact Tower and amazon are reticent on the subject as Val said the Barnes and Noble site now lists GG1 as a "repackaged CD" and similarly describes a new issue of GG2 which they now show together with a tiny graphic showing this revised front insert which is more or less what I saw
http://images.barnesandnoble.com/ima...00/9777666.gif
If anybody finds a larger graphic could they let me know please
so obviously it was a copy of the revised GG2 CD that I saw.
although having said that it would appear to make sense for the repackaged GG1 to have a similarly revised front insert
i must add that the addition of a snippet of the insert from CGH will surely muddy the waters??
(the accompanying track list shows that like the original GG2 CD issue the repackaged version has the two bonus tracks "Ghosts of Cape Horn" and "It's Worth Believin'" that were not on the original Vinyl release). I see what Valerie means by a missed opportunity by Rhino over Affair on Eighth Avenue a small but niggling detail that I doubt would have occurred had the guiding hand of Thane Tierney still been in evidence at Rhino. So all one can do is digitise this omission fron the original GG1 vinyl.
still at least they have taken the trouble of reinstating GG1 to the calalogue
For that we should be grateful
John Fowles
PS harmony judging by the frequency of ebay auctions of GG1 copies
I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for your copy to become a collector's item!!!
Perhaps you meant you would put it up in your attic?

Yes. :D

If they've changed the cover of GG2, I'd better put that one up as well. :)

Mystery fully solved

Well All Right
It now appears that my old eyes were not in fact deceiving me at Northampton after all
A couple of weeks ago I noticed that Wayne Francis' site now sported a pair of rather small images depicting revised artwork for both Gord's Gold CDs
Wayne says both are Rhino reissues his images are:-
GG1:
http://www.lightfoot.ca/gg1new.jpg
GG2:-
http://www.lightfoot.ca/gg2new.gif
At the time I did a thorough search
and only found one online store showing the new cover
see Barnes and Noble below
Now today whilst a'googling for something else I found that
cduniverse is now showing a slightly larger image of the reissued GG1 cover:-
http://cover6.cduniverse.com/MuzeAud...600/601995.jpg
but as I found two weeks ago there is absolutely no mention of either album (original or reissued) at Rhino:-
http://www.rhino.com
or at Warners:-
http://www.warnerbrosrecords.com/
whose "find artist" search box at:-
http://www.warnerbrosrecords.com/find.php
still inexplicably omits GL altogether
Tower records shows GG1 on Reprise with the original CD picture but GG2 on warner with no picture
Barnes and Noble
I found today now show the original covers for both the GG1 and GG2 but add
(GG1)
ALBUM DETAILS:

Release Date: Oct 4 2005
Original Release Date: 1975
Total Running time: 1:10:43
Label: RHINO / WEA
And the corresponding entry today for GG2 says:-
ALBUM DETAILS:

Release Date: Oct 25 1990
Original Release Date: 1988
Total Running time: 1:04:38
Label: WARNER BROS / WEA
Catalog No.: 25784
UPC: 75992578424

but the GG2 picture two weeks ago was the revised cover:-
http://images.barnesandnoble.com/ima...00/9777665.gif
their listings then continued:-
(GG2)
ALBUM DETAILS:

Release Date: Mar 15 2005
Label: RHINO / WEA
Just for those who are curious or collectors of trivia etc
