Which Gordon Lightfoot song means the most to you and why?

Rainy Day People

I hope I have been one at times and I know I have met many Rainy Day People who mean more to me than I can say.

It's an anthem to friendship. It would be a last thankyou.

What? Char! I thought for sure you'd say Beautiful. For me, it's If You Could Read My Mind.

At my funeral "If Children Had Wings." or "Thank You For The Promises." 2 sad songs...

But then again I dont want a funeral.

Wow! I'm new to this forum and had no idea there were other people out there who felt so strongly about Gord's music. Though it's very hard to pick just one song, I would have to choose "Somewhere USA". The lyrics, the bassline, the dobro...hearing that song just takes me away. "misunderstood, like I knew I would be. the one I care for don't mind, she's built that way." ahhhhhhhhhh

Charlene,

Your remarks about "Rainy Day People" were my thoughts until I got "Songbook", and read the notes about the song that Lightfoot included : "It's about the person waiting in the wings for a relationship to subside, so he can move in".

That really messed me up. Whenever I listen to it now I have to struggle not to let Lightfoot's comment block out my initial interpretation, which I much prefer.

I apply the lyrics to my belief in The Golden Rule.....

and perhaps that relationship Lightfoot talks about "subsiding" meant the "Rainy Day" person would be there - in any way possible...not to 'move in' in the way it seems he meant....

That he was waiting for it so subside reflects the Golden Rule and the philosophy of a Rainy Day person....

does that make sense.....??

;)

Charlene,

Yes it does. I just wish Lightfoot would have worded his comment differently. I never heard anything in the song that matched his note (or at least the way I interpreted the note). He should of had you do that one.

so many songs......
I would be thinking on Home from the Forest, or maybe

Is there anyone home?

Off the top of my head, I'd have to say "The House You Live In", but as Brink said, there are so many...

Now and Then. I held on to a relationship long after the flame was gone.

Borderstone 07-27-2006 09:59 PM

Hmmmm....means the "most' to me?

That's tough, they all mean something to me to one degree or another.

In a sense,I'd have to go with End Of All Time, because some of it describes how my life wnt after high school and learnig to cope in the real world.

The "love' part of that song reminds me of my last one. (Looking for another right now.)

For sentimental reasons, just about any of his acoustic early 70s slow numbers and his hits. They remind me of my hometown in Pennsylvania and being a little kid there.

Maybe Pony Man the most then. :)

As for the 2nd Q. ....I really don't like to think of those things,I get sad too easy. :(
