It seems that Canary Yellow Canoe is the least liked Gord song of all time. Gord's instincts were right to leave it off the studio albums. I enjoy it from time to time because it is interesting to hear Gord singing in a style that is atypical  I've got some good matchups that I would like to post, but I have to fulfil one more promise. The next matchup was suggested by another fellow corfider. I'm not sure why he chose to match them up, but I do believe both are played in C (chord configuration with the capo on the second fret for all you musicians who are now thinking the songs are not actually in the key of C). Here is the matchup, which do you like the most: It's Worth Believin' or Talking in Your Sleep Seems like a tough one. They're both great songs. MM |
It's Worth Believin'

'It's Worth Believin'
one of my all-time faves. |
'It's Worth Believin'. Great song!

Looks like I'm in the minority...
Talking in Your Sleep |
Definitely It's Worth Believin'.

I truely love It's Worth Believin'.
However, Talking In Your Sleep was one of those songs that just stuck in my head (in a good way). I would also sing it to my kids when they would wake up. All three of them talk in their sleep! So my vote goes for Talkin In Your Sleep, for sentimental reasons. :) |

W-ho-a boy! This is going to be like choosing between 2 lovely ladies who want to date you at the same time! (I'm assuming, since I've never had the pleasure! :D LOL! )
They do sound "somewhat" alike because Gord's voice is in the same (or nearly the same) tone on each. ..."Believin' is a fun witty kind of song, that sounds like a guy making a play for a woman's attention. I also like the closing,"na-na-na" (or is it nigh-ni-ni?" ) ..."Sleep" is moodier but just a pace or two slower, yet,I get the same mellow feeling when I listen to it. The lyrics are stark (not UA stark) but just a bit, which makes me think deep. Okay, out of frustration,I just went from here to my "150" list and based on that, the winner is: "It's Worth Beleivin'". :) Phew!!! I'm exhauted! "Talking in Your Sleep" is a good song; it has a fine melody, and has the germ of a great idea, but it's a stanza or two short, doesn't tell enough of the story.
"It's Worth Believin'" is deceptively complex--doesn't seem that hard to sing, but try it, it's harder than it seems it should be to make it sound good; the little details make it a believable story ("When I've called in the cat she'll go walkin'"), and the imagery, apparently simple, is really quite complex. For example, "There's a breeze from the shore and the waves overlap" is a great line--natural forces (wind, water) moving in two directions, overlapping relationships and feelings on top of feelings showing turbulence and ambivalence in this relationship, uncertainty about who's at fault and where it's all headed, but knowing that something big's on the way ("The moon turns the tide")--all in all a minor masterpiece. I guess that means it gets my vote. DQ |

Y'know, since this particular showdown started, the "Nah-nah-nah" closing to "Beleivin' " is stuck in my head!!!
(Maybe I should post that in my " (It's Not) Fading Away" thread?? :D ) |
Re: Showdown #18
A real tough choice. Great songs both.
That "bake a potato" background lyric, whatever it is, is peculiar. I'll take the happy song over the sad one, IWB over Talking. Some days, I might vote otherwise. David |
