Lately I have been listening to some of Marty's music and have picked up on a lot of similarities between his music and Gord's. I never realized he was such a great story teller. "Big Iron" "El Paso" "Ghost Riders" "Streets of Laredo" all great songs! Don't panic GL is still my favourite!

Marty Robbins was the first concert I evr went to, my daughter was five, the drummer from Merle Haggards band was talking to her and asked her what merle song was her fav, she said EL Paso. He go a kick out of that. Not only was Marty a great storyteller, but he was a fantastic showman. He had a very interesting life. His son does some singing now, but there was only one Marty. He also recorded a Gord song and made it #1 hit.

Marty was also the one who made Ribbon Of Darkness a #1 country hit.

I've often thought that there are similarities between Don William's and Lightfoot's style. Both have a natural, easy going sound, both have rich baritone voices and both of them are masters at singing ballads.
Stan Rogers is another one that always gets my attention when singing one of those story telling ballads.
