I'd like to hear some comments of other peoples version of Gords songs. I havent got the Tribute Album so I dont know much about that but some others that I like are.

The entire CD by Tony Rice called "Plays and Sings Gordon Lightfoot" Probably one of the best acoustic cds ever put out even if Gord had not written the songs. A must for any Gord fan.

Sara MaGlochlyn (sorry Im not sure how to spell her last name) Her Version of Song for a Winters Night is very well done and almost haunting.

Nanci Griffiths: 10 Degrees and Getting Colder is well done and a bit more upbeat than Gords Version.

The Good Brothers version of Alberta Bound which I heard twice in Hamilton was very nice. Might have sounded even nicer since it was their last number and Gord was up next. But they did it justice eh?

I like Sarah's rendition of SFAWN, but Gord's is better. I always really liked Marty Robbins Ribbon of Darkness, possibly because that was the first I heard it or that I am also a Marty fan. The rest, Gord's songs and want to hear him when the music starts.

Not sure who it was that covered Song For A Winters' Night on the tribute album Beautiful but it was fantastic

The sum total of covers that I like are 10 Degrees by Nanci Griffith off of Other Voices, Other Rooms and Ribbon of Darkess by Bruce Cockburn off of Beautiful (tribute album).
I bet Gord liked the way Nanci stepped up the beat on 10 Degrees. It sounds good. Bruce's version of Ribbon is so dark...the way he does that song can just take me to a completely different place.
Other than that, I'd rather just hear Gord do them.

love all the varying opinions in these cover threads... i'd like to head Sarah McLaughlin (sp?) performing SFAWN more 'bare', without all that haunting production but i sure enjoyed it when first hearing it...i think that Sylvia Tyson/Fricker and Quartette's version on the tribute album is stellar work

love hearing women doing GL tunes, oddly enough Nanci Griffith's is one of the only tunes i skip over on her 1st (wasn't too impressed by her second) wonderful album loaded with very moving covers...she's similar to Alison Krauss with me, i love their lower voices but rush to kill the volume when they start into the Celine-register http://www.corfid.com/ubb/wink.gif

if you go to Wayne's site you'll see a loaded list of covers, of which i, to date, know only a few but the list in not complete of course, i've heard wonderful covers by solo artists or at GL tribute nights around Ontario and i'm sure they take place all over (for eg, how about the really great work and love found in the recordings done by the ng-ers! cathy, derek, ed, melissa, matt, i dunno all or any of them really and know i missed listing some, agh), i've also heard a hearty version of 16 miles by talbot10, i love to hear em all

on the net tribute CD's, also at Wayne's site, there's some real talent, and again, fun happening with track recordings, i really love Tryptch's (sp?) version of If Children Had Wings, i could list tons of faves off of those alone

the Beautiful CD had some recordings that i enjoyed at first listening but i would make a 2 CD set from the Way We Feel artist's selections over the past few years...such a shame that these arrangements and performances were not captured on audiotape, these are rough setlists from year one and two, hope they record year three!:

I don't imagine any recording will be done again this year. It's too expensive it seems. I'd love it if they taped it in video or even just audio...
I asked Jory last year about it and he tapped his heart and head saying "it's all right here."...To which Jenney and I replied-that's fine for you - you're still young and can remember it all!"
