Just in case anybody has missed it there is a great small talk topic
"Six Degrees of Gordon Lightfoot " started by RMD at:- http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb...c;f=2;t=001287 Ron said in his introduction
Originally posted by RMD: I don't know if this has been tried before. I was thinking of a variation of the "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" trivia game from a while back. Here's a link to an explanation of the premise : Wikipedia So, pick any musician and see if you can link him to Lightfoot. The more obscure the connection the better. Here's an easy one to try : Jackson Browne.... [/QUOTE that I feel should be here so instead of replying I will start a new topic here OK Have I got a doozy for you or what?? "doozy"??? "Something extraordinary or bizarre. Etymology: perhaps alteration of daisy, and Duesenberg, a luxury car of the late 1920s and 1930s. It's an English expression" taking my cue from Ron's plea for obscurity I offer this reply My basis for this was initiated when I read the topic on the late Danny Doherty at:- http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb...c;f=2;t=001289 Then I saw the obituary at:- http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main...C-new_22012007 and must point out that the telegraph is the number 1 visited site http://images.hitwise.co.uk/awards/t...2006_white.gif From July - September, 2006, www.telegraph.co.uk was ranked #1 in the Hitwise United Kingdom 'News and Media - Print' industry based on number of visits. This ranking relates to UK based users visiting UK websites. As I read about Danny at first I was mistakenly thinking that John Sebastian was the “John“ in the "Mamas and Papas" According to their record producer, it was an incestuous group. "Maybe," he added, "that's why the harmonies were so good." but it was if course Michelle Phillip's husband and John Sebastian was the "Lovin' Spoonful"'s founder No matter as the obituary revealed that before the "Mamas and Papas" Doherty and Sebastian were in the "Mugwumps" but anyway as an initial degree item John Sebastian later played harmonica on the SDYS/IYCRMM album.I thought on and the following may well be of abiding interest to fellow Buddy Holly fan Matthew Bullis , fellow Everlys fan ELizabeth and fellow Mark Knopfler fan Al Watchman and Kristoferson fan Char as well as linking Gord to Barbara Streisand amongst many others I am about to link all these together plus a some other worthies one of whom is a Canadian John Sebastian also played harmonica on album(s) by the Everly Brothers Buddy Holly and the Crickets http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/images/The_Crickets-2.jpg were good friends of the Everlys. Indeed when I saw Don and Phil for the first time at Derby England on their 1960 tour their backing group was the original Crickets (Joe Maudlin and Jerry I Allison) http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/images/Crickets.jpg the text of that old New Musical Express article reads:- SUSTAINED applause greeted drummer Jerry Allison and. bassist Joe B. Mauldin when The Everly Brothers introduced their "very wonderful accompanists" to the packed audience at Birmingham Odeon - last date of the pair's British concert tour-on Tuesday evening. And it's been like that all along the line! For, although they have caused much mystery by not being billed as such, Jerry and Joe-plus newcomer Sonny Curtis, an excellent guitarist - are, in fact, The Crickets, the instrumental group who were once co-starred with the late Buddy Holly and who still record under that name Why no billing? Many fans of the trio have written to ask this question. Jerry supplied the answer."The point is that whenever possible, we like to work with Don and Phil and when we were offered a return trip to Britain as their accompanying group, we jumped at the chance. We'll be touring Australia with them in a similar capacity next month. "The Crickets as a group, still exist, of course. In the States, we play one-night-stand dates under our own name and continue to record regularly for Coral. "The reason we weren't billed here is that the plan for the tour envisaged one American act-not two. "If people had seen The Crickets billed to appear, then they'd have rightly expected us to do an act of our own. But that wouldn't have been right, because this was Phil's and Don's tour. "Anyway, it's nice to know the fans still remember us. We've enjoyed the tour, and like I said before, we always get a big kick working with Don and Phil", Jerry concluded.Proof that The Crickets are still very active in their own right is the release by Coral early next month of their latest disc, which couples "More Than I Can Say" with "Baby My Heart." Since their last visit to Britain, both Joe and Jerry have married. On Tuesday, Joe searched Birmingham for a suit for his wife Sherry, who expects their first baby later this year. The name of Jerry's wife is already familiar to disc fans, since at least two records have been dedicated to her - "Peggy Sue" and its sequel "Peggy Sue Got Married." Oddly enough, Jerry didn't write either* they both came from the pen of their late friend Buddy Holly. With the addition of Sonny Curtis -who, like Jerry and Buddy, hails from Lubbock, Texas-The Crickets are still a top attraction on the U.S. "big beat" scene.Good news for their many thousands of fans is that they have no intention of breaking up or dropping tbeir famous name. How do The Everly Brothers like working with The Crickets? Speaking on behalf of his brother, Don told me: "They're great, just great. We've been very good friends for many years now, and have always admired their -fine musicianship. It's always a pleasure to work with Jerry, Joe and Sonny, and we plan to team up as often as we can." Buddy was my main passion until I heard Gord. OK deep breath while I finish my researching Background In 1958 Buddy and the original Crickets split So when Buddy started his final and fatal tour in January 1959 he recruited replacements, the bass player was a protege of his from LubbockTexas called Waylon Jennings who was given only few days to learn to play bass, He later spent the rest of his life rueing a last minute joke with Buddy "I hope your damn old plane crashes" (legend has it that he lost his seat on that plane in a coin toss) and he once appeared on stage with Gord and Harry Chapin http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/images/...Harry_1977.jpg he also per ![]() and dipped "into the songbook of Neil Young ("Are You Ready for the Country")" also note this "through his swan-song recordings with Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson as the Highwaymen." from:- http://www.warr.org/csny.html Neil Young of course was part of Crosby Stills Nash and Young CSNY was hugely successful, but perhaps they're over-hyped. One could say that CSNY was neither as good nor as important as two of the bands whose leaders originally formed it - David Crosby's Byrds, and the Stills-Young dominated Buffalo Springfield (Graham Nash came later from the Hollies, who continued without him; and yes, I'm well aware that the Byrds were "really" Roger McGuinn's band). One person intimately involved with the Byrds and who frequently mentions McGuinn was Gord's ex concert sound engineer Richard Harison http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/images/richard_harison.jpg picture from the Gord's Gold LP gatefold sleeve Moving on there is a wonderful 1996 issued Holly tribute album "Not Fade Away" http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/images/Not_ Fade_Away.jpg featuring amongst others Nancy Griffith (who herself recorded "10 Degrees And Getting Colder) and the Hollies whose own recording of "Peggy Sue Got Married" was used as a backing to the original Buddy Holly recording. But for me the standout track is an extremely poignant interpretation of one of the last songs that Buddy wrote "Learning The Game". see the list of artists on the CD scan above This was produced by Mark Knopfler. This in turn would have neatly led to my penultimate point. I was quite sure that Mark's guitar riff on one track on the final Dire Straits album 1991's "On Every Street"(the very last vinyl album I bought) is a near duplicate of that on "Baby Step Back" but having dug the LP out and played it I am now not so sure So more research required sorry!! OK so my final point a sad film that I very much like is the remake of A Star Is Born in which Barbra Streisand plays the wife of Kris Kristopherson. I happen to rather like her voice and her cover of IYCRMM END John How Many degrees do I get Ron?? |
OW! I have a headache!! LOL!
In the last sentece you talk about Kristofferson & Streisand. They were both here in Phx. early last month and now Gordon's coming here. There's some degrees for ya! :D |

Based on the Six Degrees trivia game premise, and using my trusty old abacus, I arrive at 220. If you could summarize, it would be most helpful. Regardless, it's fine work. |
very interesting... but I don't get it! the point that is.
Weird to see picture of Gord with Waylon Jennings, not to mention Harry Chapin. didn't know he (Waylon) was to play bass for Buddy. Nice research Sir John! I'll have to re-read it and learn more at another time. |
my mind blew half way through this, lol...one should attempt to read a char review and john research post in the same day:)
if you take Gord's involvement in the Northern Lights (Tears are not Enough) he can be linked at probably a million artists because some of those artists have done duets with members of the We Are the World or Do They Know it's Christmas ensambles, so there's no end to the possibilities...the Gord as an actor linkages/degrees are however quite challenging for sure i'm bookmarking this post, john, thanks...i need to insert some line breaks in my mind or i'll have to buy thicker lenses! :) |
