was it a top 40 hit in the US? a DJ here in the Chicago area who has a radio show where he plays it when he does his shows about summer. of course he plays a lot old songs rarely heard today, including those that didn't make the Top 40.

Borderstone has the in with what was top 40 and when it was. He'll be along to help. He had a posting someplace about the 30th anniversary of Sundown someplace recently.

Right you are Brink! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif I'm here with the info. for Mike! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/wink.gif

Mike,"Summer Side Of Life" while a great-great song did not make the national top 40 here in the states, sad to say. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/frown.gif

During the week of 9/12/71 through 9/18,the song barely squeezed in at #98 on the Billboard Hot 100. (Sort of insulting when one finds out the #1 song that week was,"Go Away Little Girl" by Donny Osmond! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/eek.gif )

Gord's 6 top 40 hits are as follows (in order from '70 to '78):

If You Could Read My Mind #5 Feb. 1971

Sundown #1 (One week) June 1974

Carefree Highway #10 Nov. 1974

Rainy Day People #26 May 1975

The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald #2 for 3 weeks (behind Rod Stewart's,"Tonight's The Night". http://www.corfid.com/ubb/tongue.gif Nov. 1976

The Circle is Small (etc.) #33 April 1978

Very briefly,Gord's other singles that charted between #41 and 100 and that didn't even chart at all!:

Baby Step Back-#50
Beautiful-#58
Talking In Your Sleep-#64
Race Among The Ruins-#65
Cotton Jenney-#71
(again) Summer Side Of Life-#98

Outside the Hot 100 (known as the "Bubbling Under" Chart:
#101-You Are What I Am ("B" side of next song).

#102-That Same Old Obsession

and #111! - "If I Could". (Released by UA after "..Read My Mind" became a hit.)

There you go Mike! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif I reccomend,if you wish to know of other artists Top 40 Hits in America, that you buy a copy of The Billboard Book Of Top 40 Hits (8th Edition.)
The 8th edition just came out this month and all you have to do is go to your nearest bookstore and special order it. I'm getting mine in about a week. Been me. Later! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/cool.gif

As I often say, "too good to be a hit"

Just shows what charts and wins awards and what doesn't has nothing to do with quality.

Take a look at what has won Grammies over the years and songs that were beaten out (Tijana Taxi and Satisfaction both nominated one year, and Taxi won, for one example)

Just brought this to the forefront to show those who don't know, what positions on the charts Gord's singles have peaked at. Not including "Anything for Love which was mentioned in another posted thread. :)

Well, I'm looking at my CD jacket, but, it doesn't list "per song." The musicians: Chip Young/Hargus Robbins/Henry Strzelecki/Charlie McCoy/Junior Huskey/Buddy Harman/Kenneth Buttrey/ Bob Phillips? Farrell Morris/ James Rolleston/ Dave Brown

The voices: Gordon Stoker/ Neal Matthews/ Hoyt Hawkins/ Ray Walker/ Laverna Moore/ Mildred Kirkham

Recordist: Rex Collier

All songs written by Gordon. Recorded Dec 1970 through April 1971 at Woodland Sound Studios, Nashville.

Also, there's a picture in there of Red Shea, guitar, and Richard Haynes, bass.

Hope this helps.
