If you had to choose a string of FIVE CONSECUTIVE Gordon Lightfoot albums to represent your favorite GL "era," which five would you choose? Here is the list of his albums in order, in case you don't know the order:
Lightfoot!-'66 The Way I Feel-'67 Did She Mention My Name-'68 Back Here on Earth-'68 Sunday Concert(*)-'69 If You Could Read My Mind-'70 Summer Side of Life-'71 Don Quixote-'72 Old Dan's Records-'72 Sundown-'74 Cold on the Shoulder-'75 Summertime Dream-'76 Endless Wire-'78 Dream Street Rose-'80 Shadows-'82 Salute-'83 East of Midnight-'86 Waiting for You-'93 A Painter Passing Through-'98 Harmony-'04 (*)Note: If you want to include Sunday Concert in your list, then go ahead. If you want to skip over it, then skip it. Here's my list: If You Could Read My Mind, Summer Side of Life, Don Quixote, Old Dan's Records, Sundown. This is the absolute classic period, IMO. I'm curious to see what others' lists look like. I know some people will want to include all 20 in their list, but try to come up with your FAVORITE FIVE IN A ROW!!! |

Hmmm. I guess:
Dream Street Rose-'80 Shadows-'82 Salute-'83 East of Midnight-'86 Waiting for You-'93 I much prefer the later albums. The first four are right up there, and Waiting For You is a wonderful album, though not on par with the first four. Jeff |
Good question .... and almost impossible to answer as it inevitably excludes some of my favourites releases.
However for consistency's sake, I'd take the five between "Don Quixote" and "Summertime Dream". |
Yep I am one of the "I'll take all of them" but I guess it would be Sundown through Dream Street Rose. But just like my favorite song, this choice will change as the days go by.

This is almost impossible to do but if I had to pick 5 in a row they would be:
Summer Side of Life-'71 Don Quixote-'72 Old Dan's Records-'72 Sundown-'74 Cold on the Shoulder-'75 But doing that leaves out Sunday Concert, which is one of my favorites. Good question! |
Goodness, I think that's almost impossible. My fave five in a row right here and now:
Don Quixote-'72 Old Dan's Records-'72 Sundown-'74 Cold on the Shoulder-'75 Summertime Dream-'76 But there is so much more....my list could change in a few more heartbeats. Mouse |
Sunday Concert(*)-'69
If You Could Read My Mind-'70 Summer Side of Life-'71 Don Quixote-'72 Old Dan's Records-'72 Only because we have to pick 5 in a row and I love the live Sunday Concert album. |

I'm in agreement with a couple of others here. My list would be:
Don Quixote-'72 Old Dan's Records-'72 Sundown-'74 Cold on the Shoulder-'75 Summertime Dream-'76 You could also throw in Endless Wire-'78 to make it an even six, but there's no way I could toss out DQ to put it back to five. [ August 02, 2005, 14:46: Message edited by: djb (David in Sweden) ] |
Fun topic and I tried....but I just can't do it.

Easy Peasy! No doubt aboot it in my mind.
I played the first five so thoroughly in my final three years in Montreal that they will I think collectively always be my favo(u)rite consecutive five Of course my prefered CD coverage is the three reissues by the bear family when that opens suche/search for "lightfoot" (two double albums and one single album):- http://www.bear-family.de/images/bcd15576.jpg http://www.bear-family.de/images/bcd15699.jpg "plus" version with one bonus track and http://www.bear-family.de/images/bcd15691.jpg even better "plus" version with no less than five bonus tracks John Fowles And I think of you In the warmth of your home and family When love is true There is no truer occupation And may this gale Blow us to the ones we love from:- http://gordon-lightfoot-lyrics.wonde...sing-Ship.html [ August 02, 2005, 15:52: Message edited by: johnfowles ] |

Bravo, John...love the pictures, and you quoted one of my favorite songs as well!

its a toss up between:
Summer Side of Life-'71 Don Quixote-'72 Old Dan's Records-'72 Sundown-'74 Cold on the Shoulder-'75 and: Dream Street Rose-'80 Shadows-'82 Salute-'83 East of Midnight-'86 Waiting for You-'93 |
Easy! :)
1."Sit Down Young Stranger/"If You Could Read My Mind" 2."Summer Side Of Life" 3."Don Quixote" 4."Old Dan's Records" 5."Sundown" Now if we were doing 10 it's extended to 2nd fav. 5: 6."Cold On the Shoulder" 7."Summertime Dream" 8."Endless Wire" 9."Dream Street Rose" 10. "Shadows" So,quite obviously...I love the 1970's and early post 70's era. After that,he's a somewhat different artist. See ya! |
