I'm about to get me a Gords Gold CD. There are several different reasons for getting it, but the main one is because I like the way the re-recorded version of 'Canadian Railroad Trilogy' sounds. I've only heard 30 second samples of it though in the Yahoo Shopper.
Do you think this is a good reason to get this CD?(I'm getting it anyway regardless of what anyone says.) |

I prefer the remake of CRT on Gord's Gold to the original. If you ask me it's the best reason to buy it and certainly worth it. My favorite thing about the remake is the longer pause in the line "And many of the dead men... to silent to be real" It's a moment of silence in memeory and very touching.

Gord's Gold is definitely a "must have" CD. )(Well, one could probably say that for all the CDs with the possible exception of some of the EMI compilations). The rerecorded versions of his 60s songs are treasures, and for those that he has continued to perform live, the GG version is very close to what you hear live now.
I remember my first Lightfoot concert; I went to hear Wreck. I was amazed to discover that he (and not PP&M) had written Early Mornin' Rain and For Lovin' Me. But I was blown away by CRT. I went out the next day and bought the CD, so now I had Summertime Dream and Gord's Gold. Needless-to-say, that was only the beginning. CRT is my #1 favorite, and Wreck is #2 (I think for Gord, the reverse is true). I later heard the original recording, and the live version on Sunday Concert. All of them great. Red Shea's picking on the original CRT is almost too crazed. it dominates the song. The one on "sunday Concert" is outstanding. Just one man's opinion.

I used to tote the Gord's Gold cassette with me everywhere it had all my favorites on it and I never got tired of it. Then Gord's II came along and that was the favorite, I finally have had to make my own "supertape" CD. You will love it! Think of it this way also, it gets you closer to owning all of the albums.

Gord's Gold was probably the 4th album I bought after SSOL, Don Quixote and Sundown back in the 70's. I went out with the purpose of buying something new to listen to and ease my pain after my boyfriend broke our date. (It was for a good reason and we had many others after that, but hey, I was a teenage girl...everything was a BIG drama then! LOL) I stumbled upon GG, bought it and it not only made be forget my pain, but made me fall in love with Gordmusic all over again. I envy you, DMD3, as you listen to this gem of a cd for the first time. It will be quite the experience. Enjoy! |

Gord's Gold is the first album that got me started liking Gord. The CD is really a must have for your collection. As far as Affair On 8th goes, the original was much better. However, SFWN and CRT, the re-recordings are a step above the originals. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

That was my first GL as well EW78! I've mentioned it before but it bares repeating here. Sometime in the mid-'80s I got this LP and basically thought I had evrything he'd done. It wasn't a very good copy either,scratchy and the cover had ring around the collar! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif A few years later in '93,I went Zia Records in Tempe (AZ) and got my hands on,Sundown,Cold On The Shoulder,Summertime Dream and Enless Wire. I didn't get the rest until 2 years past the turn of the century! As we're all saying here,GG is a great LP (CD) for people just discovering GL. It came in yesterday but I didn't check the mailbox until late last night so I fell asleep to it. I didn't get to listen to them all, only 4 or 5 but the ones I did listen to really were quite the expierence, like Motherofaminerschild said it would be. And endlesswire78 is right when he says 'Song For A Winters Night' and 'Canadian Railroad Trilogy' are a step above the originals. What I like about it is they put those 2 together. On the Songbook, 'CRT' comes after 'SFAWN', and it's the same way on here!
'Steel Rail Blues' and 'Ribbon Of Darkness' sound really great too. In fact, 'Ribbon' is actually a good song, I just couldn't stand the clapping on the live version from the Songbook. Now I'll go home and listen to the rest of it when I get out of school. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif |

Actually, it's the 2nd time you listen to it that really hooks you. I like the backup singing in 'If You Could Read My Mind'.
By the way, did he re-record 'Minstrel Of The Dawn' or did they just do a superb job of remixing? (also like how he combined 'For Lovin Me' & 'Did She Mention My Name' |
