unfortunately I don't know.

It's a sad story when you listen to a song for ages but still don't know what it means. That happens with me quite often.

The wonderful booklet that comes with the Songbook box set
http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/LIGHTFOOT/songbook.jpg
PLease note my copy was autographed as shown on November 11th 1999: the first time ever I got to meet Gordon (at Massey Hall)
This booklet contains Gord's own description for all 88 songs
of DSR he said:-
"Damon Runyan wrote a short story about a poor lady in New York City, and I took its title and built the song around it"
I intended giving the link to the section on the Rhino site that reproduced nearly all the text from the booklet but although they still have a basic "Songbook" page (see below) up the links to the text pages and probably the pages themselves have disappeared.
So for anybody who does not own songbook the rhino site at:- http://www.rhino.com/store/ProductDe...o?Number=75802
has short clips of every one of the 88 tracks in both Real Player and Quicktime versions

Actually, the pages haven't disappeared. When they redesigned their site, the links disappeared, however, and like you I was very disappointed. However, somebody (can't remember who) had a direct link to them and the pages are there to this day. I would credit the alert person who kept the link, but I don't remember who it was!

I have the link on my web site on the Songbook page (in the last paragraph). Now I will be mean and make you go to my site! (The Songbook link is to the right of the photo, second from the bottom).

Right Valerie I checked the HTML source code for the rhino site and sure enough there now is a
line saying
"<META NAME="COPYRIGHT" CONTENT="Copyright 2004 Rhino Entertainment">" so it has been recently revised.
I won't take the credit you were offering Val actually it wasn't me but I also saved the links to use when I get around to making a dummy entry page for the Rhino site in my long-planned webring revamp: This is what I saved (text file contents):-
Producer's notes Thane Tierney http://www.rhino.com/features/liners/75802lin2.html
A word from Gord http://www.rhino.com/features/liners/75802lin3.html
Gordon Lightfoot:
Master Craftsman of Popular Song
by Nicholas Jennings http://www.rhino.com/features/liners/75802lin4.html
If You Could Read My Mind:
Gord Speaks Out About His Music
notes on every one of the 88 tracks http://www.rhino.com/features/liners/75802lin5.html
track notes http://www.rhino.com/features/tracks/75802trx.html
Perhaps I should contact Thane Tierney to tell him the links have been omitted and also ask him for permission to use those links on my webring page.Do you have a proper e-mail address for Thane Val that you could e-mail to me?? He did post to the Newsgroup but I cannot find his post and I think the addy was @remarq or something long gone

Well All Right after seeing my posting on screen I thought I had better check the links I posted.
once any one page is open there is in fact a complete set of links on every page to the other pages
There is also a table of contents http://www.rhino.com/features/liners/75802lin.lasso
That is the page that is linked on Valerie's site, but please don't let that stop you going to her wonderfully comprehensive site!!

that page lists all the various pages
all of which seem to be reluctant to open (read DAMN slow and frequently for me at least produce spurious "Cannot Be Displayed" messages)
there is also a "photos" page with
a nice B and W pic and the APPT pic sans text http://www.rhino.com/features/photos/75802photo.lasso
also an "other works" page http://www.rhino.com/store/ArtistCat...on%20Lightfoot
the latter two pages each reqired multiple attempts to open
but eventually I succeeed in saving "as a web page" each of the pages listed
Yes Gaby Baby I sure am dogged
