I have 14 Gordon Lightfoot 8 track tapes. And on Old Dan's Records, I dont have the famous song, 'You Are What I Am.'

Instead It was a song by GL that I listened too for many years ,not knowing what was it's title.

Until I bought the songbook in 2002, that same song, that I had listen to, so many times, was on there. I finally had the title to it, which was, 'Too Much To Lose'.

On the album,(LP, Record) ODR, which I also have, the songs were all correct, including; 'You Are What I Am.'

Does anyone else have that 8 track tape with those 2 songs mixed up?

"Too Much To Lose", instead of, "You Are What I Am".

Just wondering... :)

Jesse-Joe,

I can't help you with the 8-track question, but I also didn't understand what you were saying.

Are you saying you have a GL 8-track with a song ("Too Much to Lose") that is not listed on the package ?

Yes RMD agreed I had to read J-J's piece twice and was still not sure what he was getting at.

However bells rang and after I resorted to googling I rediscovered these words from the erudite pen/keyboard of Valerie
She says in her Songbook review of the then new unereleased tracks at:-
http://gordonlightfoot.com/Songbook.shtml
"One of the real jewels among these new songs is Too Much To Lose, a delightful country song which was actually mistakenly released on some 8 tracks and cassettes of the Old Dan's Records album. Since there was this mistaken release (and recall, of course), some copies of the song have been out there and a number of Lightfoot fans have heard it - and loved it - before. I happen to think that the song contains one of his most brilliant and poignant metaphors"

Thank you Mr.Fowles,

I appreciate the clarification. Jesse-Joe may have a nice collector's item on his hands.

OK here it is, I have the Gordon Lightfoot 8 track tape of Old Dan's Records. It's supposed to have the track (SONG) You Are What I Am, on it instead, it has another track that I listened too for many years not knowing what was the name of the song . Finally when I bought The Song book 4 Cd's , I discovered that same song was on one of the disc and it is entitled, "Too Much Too Lose"

On the 8 track tape it says, "You Are What I Am", as the before last song. When you listen to it, it is, "Too Much To Lose", not You Are What I Am. I cant explain it, more than that.

Yes, it is a bit of a collectors item - but probably more sought after before the song was officially released on Songbook. I used to buy every 8 track or cassette copy of ODR, hoping to get one of those rarities. Who knows? I may have one. I have several 8 tracks of the album, but no 8 track player ... As I understand it, the mistake occurred when the tapes were reissued in the early 80s, not at the time of initial release. Anyhow, thankfully, the song is now out there officially, in a beautifully remastered version. Much, much better than the 10th generation copy I had of the tape!

JJ, keep it! It won't bring you riches, but it's a very nice collectors item. Or, if you must sell it, see if Jenney is interested.

Thank you very much for the info Val. For me as soon as a GL record came out, in that time period, I would go and first buy the Album, then to bring in my car the 8 track tape. So Im holding on to something I had for many a years.

We can start the bidding at $100.00, :D :)

I have it on LP, 8 track, and CD.

I dont have the cassette.
