It was a frail-looking Gordon Lightfoot who took the stage at the Crown Theatre Sunday night. But his fans were with him all the way.
Lightfoot, who has battled some serious health problems, performed Sunday in a show that featured all of his best-known songs.
Backed by a four-piece band, Lightfoot sang "Sundown," ""The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," "Early Mornin' Rain" and many others.
The 73-year-old Lightfoot's voice is now closer to a whisper than the strong baritone that was once his calling card. Still, it was mesmerizing to hear the Songwriting Hall of Fame inductee leaf through his back pages.
The crowd was definitely on Lightfoot's side, singing along to many of the songs and laughing at his wryly-delivered stories.
The passage of the years gave added poignancy to lines like this:
"Cold on the shoulder, and you know that we get a little older everyday."
