Winter's Claw 10-27-2006 02:55 PM

A few years ago Country Music Television did a countdown of the 40 greatest men of country music. What do you think of the list? Anybody unfairly left off, or anybody who shouldn't be on the list?
I say throw Tim McGraw off this list and put Marty Robbins in his place. I can't believe Marty Robbins isn't here.

Here'e the list:

40 Travis Tritt
39 Dwight Yoakam
38 Gene Autry
37 Ricky Skaggs
36 Toby Keith
35 Mel Tillis
34 The Eagles
33 Jimmie Rodgers (Country)
32 Charlie Daniels
31 Lefty Frizzell
30 Ronnie Milsap
29 Glen Campbell
28 Chet Atkins
27 Bob Wills
26 Tim McGraw
25 Brooks & Dunn
24 Flatt & Scruggs
23 Roger Miller
22 Eddy Arnold
21 Ernest Tubb
20 Hank Williams Jr.
19 Kenny Rogers
18 Charley Pride
17 Vince Gill
16 Bill Monroe
15 Elvis Presley
14 Roy Acuff
13 Randy Travis
12 Buck Owens
11 Alabama
10 Alan Jackson
09 George Strait
08 Conway Twitty
07 Garth Brooks
06 Merle Haggard
05 Waylon Jennings
04 Willie Nelson
03 George Jones
02 Hank Williams
01 Johnny Cash

I know who's #1, and that's who it SHOULD be. :)

Hope this helps. ;)

Winter's Claw you are certainly correct on the Marty Robbins.

I am not a big Country Fan, I still call it Country AND Western. lol
I guess I have never thought of the Eagles as a country band. They have sung country sounding songs but I personally don't think they fit on the list. My top choices are(after the first two - no particular order:

Marty Robbins
Johnny Cash
Alan Jackson
Alabama
Statler Brothers
Eddy Arnold
George Strait
Chet Atkins
Charley Pride
Brooks and Dunn
Charlie Daniels
Roger Miller
Mel Tillis
Hank Williams
Waylon Jennings
Willie Nelson
Bill Anderson
Don Williams

But my list is flawed because I have only the ones I like on it.

What's the criteria to classify these guys? CD Sales? Butts in seats at concerts? ??
Kris K. needs to be in there somewhere..
there's some guys I'd certainly eliminate..Garth..Travis..Toby..

Don't know the criteria, but the reason I wrote down that list from a year and a half ago is because I had heard some of that music and I liked it so I thought Winter's Claw's taste was possibly similar to mine. Just wanted to listen to some of that music.

I thought of him too. And how about Grandpa Jones?

What's with all these men? How about a lady list?

Good question ! I agree that the double K needs to be somewhere - but to me he transcends genres and those types confuse folks who make lists. As for who should be deleted or added I'm gonna leave that one alone - peoples tastes in music is very personal and one person's Barry Manilow is another person's Amy Winehouse (.50 cents to the person who understood that last line) Gotta stop with the 222s, I think my cold is over, LOL.

Bill :)

I agree on Marty Robbins. He certainly should be on that list, but I'm glad they mentioned some old bluegrass people on there (Bill Monroe and Flatt & Scruggs) :) Usually bluegrass gets ignored.

I think Porter Wagoner & Marty Stuart should be on that list. :)
