Favorite Terry Clements licks?

(ie. leads or textures,etc)

I noticed this old thread and wondered if there had been one for Terry

http://www.corfid.com/vbb/showthread...highlight=Shea

I realize there has been some recent chat re the Wreck, Carefree, etc but I was just listening to his acoustic break in I'd Rather Press On and realized how much 'lesser discussed' stuff is out there

btw, how many members play lead? (other than must musters Stinson and Wallace)

I always enjoyed watching Terry play the solo in Baby Step Back. I got a kick out of how he'd move his mouth to one side whenever he did a bend.

I can play some lead, providing I have some warning that I have to play it, so I can learn it....

I don't like playing lead. I enjoy finger picking. I've found that over the years, I've added a little bit of lead into my solo work, like my version of SFAWN. I guess I probably intentionally did this when I used to play a few solo shows, to make the songs more recognizable.

Cathy

haha. i was just signing on to say exactly that! Two weeks ago I made a cd for my car that had all my favorite Terry solos on it. It is comforting and enjoyable to hear them all together. My favorite is Baby Step Back.
It goes on for about 36 seconds. I know because I play it over and over!
I also like Somewhere USA.

I have to put my vote in for these:

1. The downward progression from the Em chord in IFCRMM

2. The horse galloping in Don Quixote

3. The great licks in MOTD throughout the song.

4. Those in SFAWN.

I think a while back I made a couple of comments on Terry's playing, but with the passage of time, other songs that he played lead in come to mind. "The Watchman's Gone", for example.
As for playing lead - not me. I'm no virtuoso, but I finger pick okay - and as Mark Knopfler put it -"He's strictly rhythm. He don't wanna make it cry or sing...".

Re: Favorite Terry Clements licks?

I always like Terry's guitar play in Blackberry wine.
I think Terry could really wail on his guitar, and we probably never saw the upper limits of what he could do.

Several years ago I ran into him and the band minus Gordon, at the hotel bar after the show in N. Hampton,MA. I got to talking with him for a while and did ask what was his favorite music to play. He never really answered the question, but did say " Not this stuff", referring to the show.

He was a good man and will be missed by many!
How do you replace a guy of his talent that preforms on stage in bedroom slippers?

That's too bad he didn't enjoy what he was doing. Steady work though I suppose.

i hope he enjoyed it enough to make it worth spending his life doing.

Am loving the feedback here, all

Hey, can't speak for Terry but I think it's quite a leap to go from it not being his favorite to him not enjoying it

I recall Barry Harvey making a similar comment regarding It being a non-Gord genre that really floated his boat....not a bad thing, eh:)

Re: Favorite Terry Clements licks?

I think Terry loved what he was doing, playing lead in the Lightfoot Band for 40 years.
But on his days off, he probably played and listened to other music.
I think that's what he meant when he made that comment " Not this stuff" to me.

Gordon will always be my favorite singer, songwriter, but I also listen to other music. Country, folk, rock.

I think you are correct. Terry always appeared to enjoy himself at concerts. Didn't we recently see an article where GL said he would have made a great Rock and Roll guitarist?

There'd be far too many too list because I think it'd be just about everything.
(Most likely the songs I put on my old list of 150 Lightfoot favorites.)

To name five though,in no certain order ;

1. The intro to End Of All Time. Talk about setting the mood of the song.

2. Sundown,naturally.

3. The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald

4. Baby Step Back

5. The cool easy groove of Make Way For The Lady

Many more but those are quite fine. :)

Re: Favorite Terry Clements licks?

Some of his lesser-known work, "Slide on Over" , "Broken Dreams", "Forgive Me Lord", and "Stone Cold Sober" deserve more recognition.

I was so saddened to hear of Terry's death and that the five are no longer together. With Gordon having no recording plans, we'll never know what Carter might have brought to a studio album.

So glad we have all these songs electronically and many video performances too. It was a fantastic run- I'm very glad to have seen the guys in concert some 45 times. Great memories.

Re: Favorite Terry Clements licks?

that opening riff on Broken Dreams would make perfect intro music to an 80's sitcom!

Woke up this morning with "Canary Yellow Canoe" in my head. Say what you will about the song, Terry sounded pretty good there, too....

A couple that stand out for me are Carefree Highway and Hangdog Hotel Room.

I would love to know the story of the WOTEF recording sessions.

Terry is doing so much in that song. Of course the lead rifts, but there are so many little one or two note accent pieces that are layered underneath.

That was a major work.

I agree. I'm almost convinced that the mandolin-style talent shown here is what got him the job.

I really love the riffs running through Dream Street Rose, they just bounce around the song almost harmonic in style. Probably not a major Lightfoot tune but one of my favourites.
