I don't know whether this will stand or not, but I wanna hear from the ppl whats ur fav song from Harmony (If you've heard it) and Why?

Love them all, find them moving and poignant. But, at this time (and this is subject to change), it's River of Light..
"trouble don't mean nothin' to me, and I had ma share of it..." |
My Favourties at this point in time is No Mistake About It and Inspiration Lady.

"Harmony" brought me to tears several times. This is the most emotional song I have ever heard. The lyrics are quite simple but the underlying message is quite haunting. At least that's how I see it...or is it hear it?
------------------ "The station is for travelers even you must ride someday" |
End of all time. No, wait-Clouds of loneliness. No, Shellfish. EEK! I can't do it! Can't pick just one. Harmony... or... Sorry. No way. The album is too full of incredible, meaningful songs. (I have played them enough now so I don't start crying.)
|
currently, clouds of loneliness
cos, it calms me often to the point of depression (which some say is underrated) ...the real depressing part is that whenever it plays, i realize that this fine cd is running out of tunes |
It'll be 3 months on Wednesday and the answer is still,#1."End Of All Time",which I played 3 or 4 times in a row last week and sang along! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif I'm getting gooood! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/wink.gif
after that the order is something like this: 2.River Of Light 3.Harmony 4.Inspiration Lady 5.Flyin' Blind 6.No Mistake About It 7.Couchiching 8.No Hotel/Shellfish (Tie) 9.Clouds Of Loneliness 10.Sometimes I Wish ------------------ "A knight of the road, going back to a place where he might get warm." http://www.corfid.com/ubb/wink.gif - Borderstone [This message has been edited by Borderstone (edited August 10, 2004).] |
definately River of light.
it's a relaxing tune with a great melody that could stand up to the glories of the 70s tunes he recorded. cant get enough of it |
OK here's my current ranking:
1. Shellfish 2. Clouds of Loneliness 3. Inspiration Lady 4. Sometimes I Wish 5. End of all time 6. No Hotel 7. River of Light 8. Harmony 9. No mistake about it 10. Flyin' Blind 11. Couchiching The fact that there is little agreement on which songs are best is testament to how great this CD is. |
Shellfish.
"You've got faith to make you make the cost and you know you best not wait he who hesitates is lost" |
I agree with Stationmaster on that one. Harmony is truly a haunting, yet simple song. It probably tells about someone or something he has lost. I still am hooked on Inspiration Lady bcuse it describes so many ppl i know.

Shellfish is number one and River Of Light is number two. These are the two clear cut winners.
As for the rest, I like/love 'em all, with the exception of Couchiching. Pity, as it's about my hometown. -- David |
"River of Light" for me. I agree with Joveski who said it could fit with the best of his 70s (yes, I'm one of those who likes his sound and songs from the early to mid 70s the best). :)
John |
I still hit the replay button over and over for River of Light before I go on to song three...
"can you tell me how long, must I travel on..." |
Harmony is, like i said, a truly haunting, mysterious ballad about someone he has lost.

I think that "someone" was himself! Just listen to the song carefully, he is searching for his harmony...
------------------ "The station is for travelers even you must ride someday" |
that's right SM. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

End of all time. Number one on my list! A winner on a really super release. I agree that the song Harmony is about Gord himself. I think he is writing about his own voice and musical abilities at this point in his life. It is special!
|
You got a point there. I still have to say Harmony, No Mistake About It, The No Hotel and Inspiration Lady.

What happened here?

"Harmony" is my favorite. Our family was blessed with an unexpected grandaughter last November. Her name is Autumn Harmony. I play and try to sing this song to her. It has soothed her through colic and teeting very nicely.
|
That's cool. My grandbaby loves Couchiching. It's so fun to sing she's gonna be getting down old gramps cd's when she visits.

The more I listen to the entire CD, the more I appreciate it and all it's nuances. It was mentioned here and I agree that it has made me emotional a few times too. I had to put my cat, Ashley, to sleep just before I got the CD (after 10 years together) and Clouds of Loneliness really had me in tears- "Losing a friend isn't what we had in mind exactly". Bob Doidge on classical guitar helped create such breathtaking heartache to that song, I think...Linda |
the title track of this marverlous album is still my fav

About those favorites of Harmony, I would say "End of all days" is my first choice.
"Flying Blind" is in second, although I still don't understand what the song is about. It reminds me of songs by the 1970's group "America" who made "Sandman" and "Horse with no name." It was all abstract material. My least favorite is "No mistake about it." |
My favourite is still "End of all Time". Amazingly, I have converted a friend and my brother onto Gordon after playing this song, on a recent holiday. Not only that, but they are into a few other songs from "Harmony", and have now both borrowed the CD!

i dont know if you are able to catch Gord's intro on The No Hotel, but it goes like this:
"In 1989 I was in Menowus, with a party of tree huggers, down with Dr. David Suzuky and we were to meet up with Sting, on the Shangoo River which is a tribunetary of the Amazon. I had to take a guy out into the Suburbs of Menowus, which is a city of about 1 and a half milloin people about half way up the Amazon River. Got there at about 4:00 in the morning to the Nobo Hotel. And when I got there, I noticed that 2 of the letters in the name of the hotel were burned out. And the name of the sign, it was just like 'The No Hotel'. That stuck with me as a song title in the number of years which ensued and about 3 months ago, I finished the song. It's called "The No Hotel". uh dee dee duh (launches into song)" ------------------ Sidney Freedmen 'Sit Down Young Stranger' and visit The Home Page Of Gordon Lightfoot [This message has been edited by Sidney Freedmen (edited September 04, 2004).] |
Harmony is the masterpiece i think Gordie and his fans will remember for a long time
------------------ Sidney Freedmen 'Sit Down Young Stranger' and visit The Home Page Of Gordon Lightfoot |
I like Harmony the best on the album. The No Hotel and River Of Light are also really good!
|
I like to listen to Couchiching because it's not so immediately "accessible" as they say, so I like to imagine what Gord was thinking about and aiming for with this composition...and I love Clouds of Loneliness too

Not only that but Gord was with Sting in a party of treehunters (as I hear it anyway) led by David Suzuki But having checked maps of the Amazon Valley I still do not understand why they ended up in Manaus which looks a great distance from the Xingu. Just maybe I'll get a chance to ask the man himself on that point! ------------------ My Gordon Lightfoot webring starts at http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfoot [This message has been edited by johnfowles (edited September 17, 2004).] [This message has been edited by johnfowles (edited September 17, 2004).] |

thanks John I couldn't hear that. You talkin' about that entro before he sings The NO Hotel? He must have good ears. |
River of Light "hit" me the first time I heard it and it's still my favourite. Like Joweski says - "Can't get enough of it."
To me, it speaks of his optimism for the future. It's also a bloody good tune! |
River Of Light and Shellfish are my two faves on the album, and will easily stay in my top ten or fifteen GL songs for a looooong time to come.
That's one heck of an accomplishment, since my favourites tend to change on a daily basis! |
Shellfish helps to keep me alive. I keep it wrapped around my heart.
|
I love what you said about Shellfish, Patti-you keep it wrapped around your heart. I, too, have found it to be the perfect tonic to sadness, defeatism: do not be down-hearted, there's still a ways to go, etc. I sing along and feel strong and great!
