I rarely listen to the radio but my daughter Lisa does.
Last night around 11 p.m. Lisa came running from her room to tell me a Lightfoot song was on the radio but she didn't know what song it was. I turned on my clock radio and attempted to find the station...as I searched I heard the familiar words of Daylight Katy... Lisa said "No that's not the song!" I had my radio set for FM and hers was on AM so I searched along the dial for the song she heard......and there it was! "Anything For Love" was on another station.... sheesh....two different Lightfoot tunes on two different Toronto stations at the same time...whoda thunk it? lol |
It's interesting to hear the choice of songs by Lightfoot that radio stations play. Over the past few years I've heard the following songs on various radio stations:
IYCRMM Sundown Beautiful Summer Side of Life Don Quixote Go Go Round Did She Mention My Name? Anything for Love Softly Restless Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald A good sampling of his wide variety of work I would say. |
The Lightfoot songs I recall hearing on radio (Memphis Tennessee):
If You Could Read My Mind Beautiful Sundown Carefree Highway Rainy Day People Cold On The Shoulder Song For a Winter's Night Softly Race Among the Ruins Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald Daylight Katy The Circle Is Small All I hear nowadays (Orlando Florida) is: If You Could Read My Mind Sundown Carefree Highway [ July 17, 2006, 23:21: Message edited by: rickv ] |
I am not too crazy about most Chicago radio and the same redundant nonsense they play. There is an oldies station I listen too, and a Jazz/Easy Listening Station. I can only recall the following GL songs ever getting airplay:
- If You Could Read My Mind - Sundown - Carefree Highway - Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald Short list huh? :-( There was one exception; there used to be this great syndicated show on sundays nights, for 2 hours only. They played everything low to mid-tempo across the board. And they would play "Beautiful" on occassion. This show was on for 20 years and suddenly with no warning, dropped. Boy, was I mad. |

Kenyon and I have access to the same radio stations around Toronto - we have the stations for the stuff the kids listen to, another for pop music, sports radio, adult contemporary/70's stuff and previous years. And all have nattering/chattering fools blathering endlessly and I just don't listen anymore...and the stations I would listen to seem to play the same songs over and over until I'm absolutely ill.

And how do you know *I* won't blather mindlessly? :D
Then again, I suppose I could blather in Swedish, then you wouldn't know the difference! |
Jennifer, all "oldies" stations play those same 4 top 10 hits by Gordon. They are pretty much required too. Program directors just go for the obvious at those stations.
They'll never play "Rainy Day People" or "I Can See It In You Eyes" (1978 Version) because they weren't "big enough hits". So out of his 6 top 40 hits we get 4. Great as it can be to hear them (after I request them during the lunch hour req. show)it is redundant. :D |
"I Can See It In You Eyes" (1978 Version)
Do you mean The Circle is Small? |
He must mean The Circle Is Small. It got decent airplay in the Toronto area, and the 1978 version is a remake. And I like this version best.

if you could read my mind and sundown |
I heard Rainy Day People recently while driving near my sister's home in New Jersey. And MY pickup truck radio plays everyone of Gord's songs when I tune my iPod through it. Sounds great !

I'll be there in spirit, but that's about all I can manage this year. I've only been working since November, after a long layoff, so I neither have the money nor the vacation time accumulated. The timing would have been great, though. My family, Gord, and the Corfid gang, all in one happy holiday! Oh yes, and a single Swedsih man for Char. :) |

One of the Dregs mentioned:

Those from Melbourne have their own beer and it is named to coincide with their social status within Australian society..They are generally regarded as the dregs - but those with love in their hearts,( such as myself ), would never point this out lest it upset them..... I doubt that anyone is terribly interested in your proposal of meeting others from Melbourne Michael... ;) http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/5...websizewu7.jpg |

I move in exclusive circles and adopt impeccably discerning tastes as well! What a coincidence! ;) My goodness this should be a breeze for you to accomplish - but I might add that he really shouldn't like to listen to the radio either.....LOL For the rare times there's a Lightfoot tune played it's not worth listening to.. Does he get much airplay down your way? The car mechanic in the MadViolet video that Jenney posted about sure knew the words to the Wreck! Many more than I could recite without benefit of the song playing! |
Steve,
Perhaps you could then forward Char the Sydney white pages...unless of course, you're a sample of the best that that 'fair' city has to offer.. ;) in which case, she might be forced to reconsider her 'mail order man' plan |
LOL Stevo
Watch out everybody the holigans are arguing.beware of low flying boomerangs |
another melbourne hooligan calling... now where's my bitter?

I did better just google image searching where I found a largish picture at http://www.axesandalleys.com/Index/aa002/beer.jpg clickable thumbnail below http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/2531/beerdy5.th.jpg is this from the same brewery?? |

Down here I often hear on radio,"Go Go Round", & "Did She Mention My Name."
I beleive Im on the right post, at least that's the way it started, back at the top. |
I've had much better success with internet radio like live365.com. Even with the free account there are a lot of stations and if you type lightfoot into their search you'll see they play a lot of stuff.

First up .."on topic"...
It is V rare to hear any of Gord's tracks as far as I am aware on radio in Sydney ... Off topic. I prefer your thumbnail John where are my heart pills - ...damn nearly spilt my VB...! I'm pretty sure I Googled the dregs....? Just checked ..It was. On the 6th page of images for me.Does this URL thingy help? http://uk.geocities.com/jonny_kerr/2canswebsize.jpg Also was glad to see the only slightly biased LSH taking the jest in the spirit it was meant and replying in kind and quite well :) :) ...(as did my old drinking mate Joveski - also a native of the maligned town...) Back to topic...If you wanted to hear a GL track in Sydney on radio (and there wouldn't be many of them ) it would be on a radio station that didn't play anything post 1975 . I try to keep my ears open to modern music too..- hoping a new GL may spring up one day ! So in that quest I sacrifice the opportunity to hear him. But in truth it would only ever be Sundown, IYCRMM ,and V rarely The Wreck even then...so I am better off playing a CD when it suits me... cheers Stevo |
> damn nearly spilt my VB
stealing our victorian beer, eh? :D |
oh yeah mende, it's his favorite, didn't you know? ;)
|
