I recently found this forum..been reading posts and I think I've found a new home. Just wanted to introduce myself and say hello. I'm Jeff..39 from Virginia. I grew up listening to and loving my Dad's music..Gord, Kingston Trio, Peter Paul and Mary, Clancy Brothers, etc. I love many types of music but I return to Gord's beautiful, peaceful sounds almost every week for my soul fix. I've not met many people in my area who know or appreciate the music and lyrics of Gordon Lightfoot. I am trying desperately to get the time and the money to see Gordon in Veinna VA in August. Its about 6 hours away from us and I think this is as close as he'll be to us. I want to take my Dad. Neither of us have ever had the opportunity to see him live and until I found this forum I thought we were his biggest fans. Thanks for such a great forum. I look forward to reading your posts and maybe talking with some of you.

Welcome aboard, Jeff. Here your in Lightheads territory. Your among friends...Jesse. :) ;)

Welcome Jeff and HI from Toronto!
Try to get to that concert...you'll be more than happy that you did. Char |
Hi Jeff, and welcome! Sounds like we had similar musical influences growing up...my dad passed on his love of music to me through a very eclectic mix...most of the artists you mentioned, plus singers like Joan Baez and Bob Dylan, and now add some Jazz from Dave Brubeck, some brass from Herb Alpert, some guitar from Andres Segovia, and some rock influences from bands like the Beatles.
Having learned that music itself is a very personal thing, I did not limit myself to one genre, but remained open to new influences. My own tastes are very eclectic as well. But I like how you put it...returning to Gord's music for a soul fix. I find myself doing the same. I am happy to say I will be seeing Gord live again in Minneapolis in September. First time since 1980 or thereabouts. I do hope you get the opportunity to see him in August, and, if so, please share your experience with us here! Once again, welcome. |
Hello from Northern Maine. I was in the same boat as you a few years ago, and thought I was the only Lightfoot fan left on the planet, until I found this place and the newsgroup, alt.music.lightfoot. Welcome to our little world.

Welcome on board Jeff enjoy yourself here!!
It really warms my heart whenever I read of yet another Lighthead admitting that they previously thought they were the only Lightfoot fans in the world I and countless other Brits used to feel the same way.I realised in 1997 that as I told Wayne Francis of http://www.lightfoot.ca, after he had opined that Gord would never play England again "I must get over to North America then to see him one more time before he and I get too old" Truly prophetic words bearing in mind the close brushes with the grim reaper I had in 2000 and Gord 2 years later. In the event as several here know in 1999 I went into the Friday evening chat room (see below for advert) met a super fellow fan, and luckily made the pilgrimage to Massey Hall's House of Gord that November married her and am now in New Jersey and eagerly looking forwards to our next magical Lightfoot experience in New Brunswick. that's the University/Hospital city in NJ (It was incorporated as a town in 1736 and chartered as a city in 1784) not the confusingly named copy-cat Canadian province (The Province of New Brunswick was therefore officially created by Sir Thomas Carleton on August 16, 1784.) that produces fine fans like young Jessie-Joe here Anyway the point is if you are a keen fan you really MUST make the effort to witness Gord in action before it is to late (the man is after all almost 68 and though we hope not thinking of retiring just yet life is unfortunately finite) Now come on you cannot expect us to be impressed by your bleat "Its about 6 hours away from us and I think this is as close as he'll be to us" Big deal!! in 1999 I travelled for about 15 hours and 3000 plus miles soconsider yourself blessed that it is only 6 hours there will be a number of erstwhile Brits and others flying much longer than that toToronto for the privelage next November plus possibly even some attempting go learn to walk upright from Australia too and there will be several potential friends from corfid at Vienna,VA,so go if only to repay that resident of the original Vienna,Austria, young Florian who owns this superb corfid web site Ok that is one advertisement. Now the next I just mentioned the chat room. we have kept it going and a session is held every Friday at 9 PM EST. just go to:- http://www.glchat.notlong.com which should open the detailed page on my web site at:- http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfoot/chat/ Look for the blue button which should work unless you have a very new computer with no Java applet handling facility. Jessie-Joe that probably includes you if so hit the red button after first hitting the green button and getting the free programme mIRC John Fowles [ July 21, 2006, 10:35: Message edited by: johnfowles ] |

Welcome aboard Jeff,
Do what you have to to make it Wolf Trap, he may not pass this way again too soon. There will be at least 5 corfid folks at the show plus a number of lurkers who don't like to announce themselves in public. We're meeting to eat before the show at Ovations which is on the grounds. It's a fabulous venue to see him. OK I'm the old guy with a USMC haircut and a Hawaiin shirt. Some of us will be in the third row in the pit in front of the stage. Stop by and say hello or better yet stop by and eat with us, and bring your Dad. Hope to see you there, Bill :) |

Hi Jeff. I am new to this forum as well, and can totally relate to what you're saying. Until I got here I felt like one of the only Lightfoot enthusiasts in the world. A lonely feeling, but look around you now, you're alone no longer :)
Peace~ Jen |

Hello Jeff from another Virginian!
Welcome to the group! |
Jeff & Jennifer, I can see that a lot of us have felt the same way. I've typed this before, more than once, saying I was sure I was the only Lightfoot fan in the world. But only found out here, that there are lots of Lightheads around.
He is a," magical poet genius." That's how I call him...Jesse. :)  http://home.earthlink.net/~budchap1/waggerblink2.gif [ July 22, 2006, 00:14: Message edited by: Jesse -Joe ] |

:D Better late than never I say.. welcome to our little corner on the WWW. You will find everyone friendly here.
I've met a few at the Hamilton gig, Gord's first concert since his brush with death a couple of years ago. Been listening to Lightfoot ever since I knew of him back in 77 when The Wreck was on the radio. If you get a chance hang by the backstage door and you will get to see GL and the band. The guys in the band are really nice. First time I met the band Terry invited me and the other 5 outside to come on in and have all the beer and food we wanted! :D Again welcome to the board! Gord |
Gord H, you were at that famous Hamilton concert? There must be something you can share here. The staff that treated him were there, must have been really good. The signing must have been a little weak tho?...Jesse.
|
Hi L.M.! :) Welcome to the Gord Board! :D
Borderstone coming at you out of Phoenix,AZ. I'm 38 myself and I Also grew up with my Dad's (and mother & grandmother's) music. That's anything from the early 20th century to the early 1960's. I found the rest myself. ;) I've been a "Lighthead" for 5 years now (next month on the 7th that is.) Wish I'd found him sooner. ;) ,I'm glad you like it here, the more the merrier because the less...the scarier! LOL!! See ya! |
lazymorning,
Just echoing Char's sentiments. Get to that concert! From your posts, you sound like an ardent fan with an emotional attachment to Lightfoot's music. When the "exit" sign of life comes on, leave with no regrets. Do it now. Good luck. RMD |
lazymorning - I notice you are having a bit of a problem with the quote function.
After you click on quote, type underneath. It will show the quote and then your message under the line. Like on Charlene's. |

My own father suffered a similar fate 6 months afte GL got sick, my dad almost died from an AAA and he was treated by Hamilton Health Sciences as well. Knowing that all of the proceeds that night were going to HHS I definetly wanted to go for two reasons, saving both GL's life and that of my dad. When GL and the band walked on stage that night he was greeted by a thunderous roar and applause to which he said " Sorry I'm a little late" The first couple of songs were a bit rusty however he and the band quickly got into the swing of things. The concert was interspersed with his comments about McMaster Hospital, the staff, doctors and nurses plus his tale of recording Harmony from a hospital bed! LOL He also pointed out his surgeon who was in the front row Dr M as I call him, Dr M stood up and he was greeted with a thunderous applause as well. It was really great meeting BillW, Charlene, Jenney, Minstrel Man, John Fowles and the others at the restaurant before the concert. :) |
Thanks, Gord H, that night must have been worth all the money in the world. And he opened by saying Sorry Im a little late, What a guy, simply awesome person ,the very best.
He was 2 weeks from the Moncton, NB. date when that tragic thing happen. If he ever gets to do it, supposed to be next April, I wonder if he still will say that,"Sorry for being a little late". It will be four and a half years, in April 2007. Ive always said this, that he chose the best for last. :D Not to worry, I will start the thunderous applause, if Im so lucky, as to be there. Thank's for replying to me Gord H, your a good buddy...Jesse. :) [ July 23, 2006, 08:45: Message edited by: Jesse -Joe ] |

This morning after a weekend away from my computer preparing for the visit starting this evening of my young nephew Matthew from Manchester, who I believe likes IYCRMM quite a lot,I thought "sod the corfid search system lets try google" but a search for "char(lene) corfid hamilton" also produced nowt. determined not to be beaten,I went to alt.music.lightfoot and searched within that Newsgroup for "hamilton author charlene nowt again. So almost in desperation I changed "charlene" to "char" and bingo I found her fantastic thread subject "Gord Got It Done" (definitely one to add to my forthcoming webring's Newsgroup page as a highlight of the group's postings her original posting is at:- Link the very first of 18 replies was from the "zippo" man himself and reads "Char, I can't find the words. This is just a beautiful, beautiful piece of writing, which capured the whole experience for me, and I'm sure for everyone else who couldn't be there. Thank you for this. It's a keeper. the Derek (Kidd)_" My wife Susan also wrote a fine report Topic: A Few Thoughts on Hamilton and it was posted under my name at:- http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb...=002802#000002 OK really The only things Char omitted were the the pre- and post-concert events On the sunday a pre-concert dinner had been arranged at Walt’s Beanery and Taps which was virtually adjacent to our hotel which itself was right opposite the concert hall in the Hamilton Place Complex (arrangements made by Steve a.k.a. Minstrel man) In that topic I showed a picture of one of the set of badges we all wore http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfoot/johnbadge.jpg As originally suggested by BillW and/or Gaby see"- http://www.corfid.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ul...ic;f=1;t=00260 badges that Susan and I made and mailed to all that we knew were attending (including one to Gaby in the UK). The sharper eyed amongst you might spot that this incorporated a cryptically positioned picture of a polar bear this proved far too cryptic for all but Jimmy Jones' baby son Harrison who was the only person to have his badge pinned to his right breast.(we therefore had great fun telling just about everybody else to think of the words to "Flying Blind" and move their badge accordingly!! It was fabulous meeting so many fellow fans especially meeting again long time "groupie" Lynne Ackerman http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfo...arry_Keane.jpg Lynne with a drummer "back"stage (actually under it) in May 2001 who we were sad to find later had a serious medical problem very soon thereafter and has been in a Toronto hospital in a coma ever since. Also staying in that hotel was a certain favourite son of Orillia Ontario Canada and we were most pleased when that man and his band were able to persuade the hotel bar personnel to remain open later than usual on the (Sunday) night after the first concert so that they could spend a very long time with those of us lucky enough to go to the bar. Welcome Lazy Morning. I live in VA although it's Northern Va. I happen to have one extra ticket to the Aug 2nd GL concert, beautifully located in the pitt right in front of the Wolf Trap Stage. The ticket is pricey at $125 but it is yours if you want it. ;) Hope to meet you there

LazyMorning,
I'm really sorry you can't join us but BillW and the rest of us will fill you in on the concert. 'Lizbet (Thanks to Sir John Fowles) |
