Do all of you know what a coda is?
It can mean a few things, but the universal meaning is an imprimitur, a final imprint or impression of an experience. It ties in with one of the songs on "Harmony". I have listened to this album all the way thru maybe 18 or 20 times now and even tho it didn't sell that many copies, I think it is rising slowly to the top of Gord's best work. It happens that my favorite song on the album turns out to be "Sometimes I Wish". God, what a sad song. But very intelligently written. When Gord sings "it's too late now to believe in a vow", or "everywhere I roam, there's nobody home" or "I begin to wake up to, how wrong it was to cling to you..." It seems these sentiments, more than any press release, say just how hard the door has been shut on Gord and Elizabeth's marriage. It was earlier last year when we first heard that they had seperated, but now it seems there is no return. There has been some divorce in my family, as in many others, but I can't remember hearing so solid a break without hope of recapitulation as I hear in this song. That is indeed, sad. I wonder if their official marital status is still separated or now divorced. It just seems strange for a 65 year old man to be starting from scratch again. I know Elizabeth is many years younger and that makes a difference to her, but, man, this seems to be a coda to their marriage. I don't think Gord would have dug this deep into himself and exposed these feelings if he didn't think the marriage was completely, irrevocably "gone". Why is it my favorite in light of the subject matter? I guess it's Gord being honest..also the phrasing he uses and the excellent electric guitar breaks....a heartbreaking song, but also among his best, I think. |

Rob,"why" is S.I.W your favorite? That's easy,honesty. Just like you said at the end of the message,youlike it for that reason despite the subject matter. Gordon gets his point across without being either maudlin or sappy. Which is the same reason we all love his style.
Think about it..has a GL song ever made you nauseous with sentimentality? Made youu roll your eyes by being over dramatic? I don't think so,personally. "End Of All Time" has the same effect on me,totally hit me where I live. On the subject of his marital status,I'm certain they've finalized their divorce by now. Yes,it's weird to think of a 65 year old person having to start from square one. If I were in that situation,I don't know if I'd even try again. Gord on the other hand,I believe will not give up so easily. He's never given up on his career,despite critics,so in the relationship dept. he has to be his own critic and decide if he wants to move forward or just fly solo.(Without Flying Blind if you know what I mean.) I've never really kept up with entertainment news (that's all changing now...heh) so I had heard Harmony well before I knew Gord and Liz had separated. Suddenly, I went from wondering if there was trouble in the marriage to having the album make complete sense. It is sad. Heart piercing.

Any time, Any place! Although I am younger than he, I think not young enough. As far as starting over, Gord spent many, many years between marriages and he has said himself a lot of those alone and it wasn't so bad. I also doubt that he will go back to the wild and crazy life of the 70-80's. This whole health issue has probably brought a new meaning of life to him. Since we haven't heard anything, I would assume he is still married. I'm sure the papers would have picked up on any divorce. Remember his first marriage was the highest settlement ever until the Trudeau divorce.

ouch. divorced twice and never saw a red cent, raised my kid on my own money (hard earned--you try being a single mother, then talk to me), never saw child support either. There's many stories out there, and they go more than one way, with more than one ending. And yes, it was Canada. |
I do recall that Gord was wearing his wedding ring in the Inspiration Lady video which he filmed last February. Although he may have been intending to send a message to Elizabeth, I don't know. Neil Diamond openly admitted that he was the sole blame for his divorce from Marcia after twenty some years of marriage. I dont think he mentioned infidelity but did say he always put his career first. That may have been the case with Gord. Looks like Gord and Neil share more than working with Lee Holdridge between them!

I had a job for 22 years - being a wife, home-maker and mother. Not a penny earned. Worked 24/7/365. Left to pick up the pieces after he walked 2 years ago - 28 years married....you can bet I'll get half or more and I deserve every penny-even if it is Canadian! It's not free money though. |

That's right sister! During my marriages it was the same. The first husband actually didn't want me to work and sabotauged every attempt I made to get a job.

My divorce from my kids' dad was a pennyless one. Also no child support and two kids. I finally about four years ago was talking to a woman who works for Social Services here in Colorado. For a small fee for people who are not receiving assistance she will track down the non support parent and get them into court. She did for me, although the Minnesota court disregarded the money owed that was over ten years old. I still got about four years of back support, and he finally remembered that he had kids. He now is a doting grandfather. He owes me again for that one. |

I'm just really relieved that the Watchman is able to post. I was concerned that in real life he might be Mark Hacking. The very fact that his posts appear here proves that he isn't.
