Wow, John, sounds like you had a full and enjoyable few weeks filled with good music, good company, incredible sights and good fun. Can't ask for more than that. Next time you make it out to San Diego, let me know. I'd love to show you and Susan around.
Just the other day, I was wondering what the heck happened to Cathy, myself. I really missed her and Val in Toronto and hope all is well in Maine. |
I saw where Cathy posted on May 26th on the newsgroup while I was reading some posts there last night.

John,
Missed Friday nite w/ the needs of the evening for Mama. She continues to strengthen. I hope to join y'all this next go round. What a wonderful whirlwind you were on. Glad to have been on the list to meet you each - and both. The Rez [ June 05, 2005, 23:19: Message edited by: The Rez ] |
As I expected after I posted last week I thought of more highlights from our recent adventures
I think the biggest omission (which I don't think anybody else has mentioned) was that at both the Cerritos and Agoura Hills concerts there were large monitors mounted either side of the stage And on one of those nights Gord positioned himself cent(e)re stage and looked left and right admiring his large image. What made it for me was that he had a silly grin on (very like my favo(u)rite moment in the Reno video where just after he walked on he gave that same grin to the camera:- Priceless!! chat room commercial and apology Although we had another successful chat session last Friday both Sheryl and Deb (brink) reported to me on Sunday that the chat room appeared to have died. Some investigation then revealed that as notified when trying to visit the Internet Relay Chat hosting site http://www.dilexnet.net one is curtly informed "This domain name expired on 05/26/05 and is pending renewal or deletion." So it would appear that the owners have so far omitted to renew their domain name's registration. I found out the owner's email address plus I had a good contact from when I set up this revised arrangement after the demise of the IRC host that Rik had used and have twice emailed both contacts so far with no response. So boys and girls I may be faced with another search for a suitable host for our chat channel #gordonlightfootchat I will as hitherto endeavour to find one that enables access both by your browser using a Java applet or by the recommended mIRC method which based on my previous experience is not going to be an easy or quick job. In fact I fear that unless I get lucky it may well turn out that I can only arrange for an mIRC-accessible setup. Fortuneately I think that the majority of the regulars eventually bowed to the pressure and installed mIRC (which I insist is no big deal) but it does mean that regrettably there can be no chat session tonightusing the regular system/IRC channel. By all means though do try the various links on my page at:- http://www,johnfowles.org.uk/lightfoot.chat/ OK Ok mindful of how certain persons might miss their weekly "fix " I have just rechecked the current "bravenet" chat room that Rik was experimenting with at:- http://pub41.bravenet.com/chat/show.php/3487845653 wait for the applet to load then type in your screenname ignore the "profile" box and click the "chat" button I'll try that this evening at 9PM EST and hope a few others do likewise John Fowles When the autumn wind goes whistlin' through the trestle we would climb Like brave mountaineers We never were much bothered by time from:-http://gordon-lightfoot.the-lyrics.com/brave-mountaineers-151212.html |

I just checked out Rik's room -- it works great, John. We can use that one. I may not be able to be there until a bit later tonight. Perhaps 7:00 p.m-ish. (Pacific time)

Got a chance to visit the chat room late last night and spend some time with a couple of you...Anne & Sheryl, thanks for sharing your time and thoughts with me. I am looking forward to increasing my musical library on your recommendations and listening to what will be, I am sure, new favorites.

I was very pleased to see that you made it and found at least two erstwhile fans to chat to and get advice from Just fire away here as much as you like lots more advice available. Sorry I missed you but my wife had had a hard week and was asleep and I am not at all keen on the temporary (bravenet) chat room we had to use. Hopefully by next Friday the owners of my favo(u)red chat room hosting site http://ww.dilexnet.net will have woken up to the fact that they have (so far) allowed their domain name's registration to expire and with any luck they might even deign to repsond to my two (so far) emails alerting them to the problem they are causing .If I write again to them I will have to offer to organise a whip round for them but as far as I know the reregistration is probably only about $20.00 for a further two years. Meanwhile yesterday afternoon I succeeded after a modicum of googling in making live contact with an alternative hosting outfit whose arrangements appear to include a "browser entry" method i.e. using a suitable Jaca applet and is also mIRC compatible so if all else fails I will just have to start again So watch this space John Fowles The space shuttle ends where the subway begins There's a tear on the face of the moon from:- www.elyricsworld.com/go/g/Gordon-Lightfoot-lyrics/ Too-Many-Clues-In-This-Room-lyrics.html You're like time is to space, you're like faith is to trusting. ... from www.coquet-shack.com/lyrics/ Lightfoot/Fine_As_Fine_Can_be_0078.php |

Thanks, John, for the welcoming words and for providing a place for us to discuss Gord's artistry in "real time". I look forward to more of the same.

and hope you make it this evening Well All Right!! Newsgroup highlights week ending friday 17 June 2005 I just posted on the Newsgroup the corfid highlights and started by saying:- One major highlight is only viewable if you visit the Forum itself....hint hint I suggest that no further comment on the relevant subject should be made over there for now rgarding our topic here that covers Gord's 1976 Saturday Night Live appearance at:- http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb...c;f=1;t=003231 the tone of the Newsgroup discussion is different to but strangely coincidental to the thread here on the Newsgroup http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...1441a08fdfedb9 As usual that URL is direct to the initial posting that initiated that thread and to see all the responses (mainly on how "lame" SNL is at times you must click on the "show options" link on the top line and delect "view thread" then "view tree" If you do you will see my posting about the great UK pop group "The rutles":- I said in full:- Well All Right as an Englishman I missed the vast majority of SNL in its obvious heydays And I missed the full repeat of the episode with Gord last week having seen Summertime Dream on its own a couple of years ago when that episode was shown on the "E" channel. However I do fondly recall seeing in the UK another outstanding SNL edition that featured a delightful parody/pastiche (starring amongst others John Belushi and George Harrison) of another foursome produced by Pythons Neil Innes and Eric Idle made originaly for "Rutland Weekend Television" from the now largely extinct English County of Rutland and starring the home grown "pre-fab" four "The Rutles" about a group of erstwhile musicians that are instantly familiar http://www.rutles.org/rpix/cavern.jpg Picture of The Rutles at the Cavern Club I still have have a video recording (actually recorded onto the spare part of an official Dire Straits musical video in PAL Betamax tape format no less (although I have made a good NTSC VHS digital conversion for my John Lennon mad stepdaughter) All as describe on the great web site:- http://www.rutles.org/ http://www.rutles.org/images/tht.gif (The Rutles tragical History Tour logo) with some memorable moments and catchy tunes that really capture the authentic style of Lennon and McCartney such as their string of hits from 1963:- "Rut Me Do" "Twist and Rut" "Please Rut Me" and other gems like "Ouch" "Piggy In The Middle" "Get Up And Go" "I Must Be In Love" "With A Girl Like You" "Blue Suede Schubert" the parody went as far as mock Rutles album covers such as this:- http://www.rutles.org/rpix/srodcb.jpg The cover of the Parlourphone LP Sgt. Rutter's Only Darts Club Band If you have never seen this and appreciate the Beatles I heartily recommend this show now available on the DVD "All You Need Is Cash" see:- http://www.amazon.com/exec/obi*dos/t...ZEU2?v=g*lance Those of you who were lucky enough to meet and hear Ron Jones from Vancouver in Toronto recently must read his comments in his responses to a thread I stated to alert him to the chance to play IYCRMM at a local wedding see the thread that starts at:- http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...c7c02494?hl=en I also told the Newsgroup that Having been alerted to the existence of a new compressing format to succeed mp3s (aacplus) I had tried to stir up a little "techie" dialogue on this subject on the small talk forum at:- http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb...145;p=1#000003 but I only got a single reply --------------------------------------------- Here is my weekly chat commercial Last week I was surprised at how many found their way into Rik's alternate "Bravenet" chat room which sufficed for one week when our usual arrangement was out of action So now where are we?? First the bad news then the good once again I have failed to write my planned tutorial for the chat room but below you will find two screenshots (or links to them) to help you decide once in the room which way you used to get in!! surprising how many have no idea But the good news is that my IRC hosting outfit (dilexnet.net) finally coughed up their domain name renewal fee on Saturday the 11th (they never replied tomy alerting email but their opening page now says: "After two years, the growth potential has been realized. Only a few days ago, we reached record numbers of users on the network. Due to an expired domain, these numbers have dropped quite a bit, but we hope to see it rise to the record once more" so all is now functioning which will leave me more time to work on the chat room tutorial:- hoever the existing links on my page at:- http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfoot/chat still function and as a preliminary to my rewrite of the instructions here is another attempt to presemt a simplified choice of entry methods. By now several chatters have wearied of being constantly told to install mIRC and successfully bit the bullet. For them if they have not fully configured their program(me) the following link:- irc://irc.dilexnet.net:6667/gordonlightfootchat should automatically open mIRC in the correct channel (and I confess I simply do not undertand how it works so there don't ask) So OK you have resisted this far why yield now? read my blurb on my site page? this then is how the room looks via mIRC:- http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0UQCdA...m-via_mIRC.jpg please note that if you indeed entered using mIRC the name and logo will appear in the upper left hand corner If your considered response is to eschew the delights Of mIRC then you will have to use one of the two browser/Java applet methods I have laid on at great expense I might add. So either wait for my own site's applet to load from the page linked above (see note below I had a problem myself earlier) or click on this link for dilexnet's own applet:- http://www.dilexnet.net/irc/webchat/...nlightfootchat which will bring up a sign-in page:- Now there's a not-very -funny thing After I made that screenshot I tried to sign in so that I could make a further screenshot of how the room appears and found it refused to open (no attempt to load the applet just a "The page cannot be found" notice dammit To cap it all trying to use the quick automatic link direct to mIrC works a treat on my own PC but when when I tried to do the same for my own applet (the JW_IRC applet by a Russian actually I haven't a clue how to write such a thing myself) the applet itself refuses to load on my own PC but trying it on Susan's produced the alarming reference to the Russian Glass Company that I had never seen before but Deb Brinkley had told me about and then Internet Explorer mumbled on about disabling something yet still the chat room appeard. I must stress that the applet in question I obtained from a Russian site and uploaded it to my own web site from where it will actually load onto your computer so I do not think there is anything to worry about. Oh well better luck next time so I really am not sure if this week anybody not on mIRC will get in so go and read my screed at:- http://johnfowles.org.uk/LIGHTFOOT/c...tingupmIRC.htm Oh yes the chat s usual 9 pm EST (just over one hour sorry this is late) John Fowles [ June 18, 2005, 15:29: Message edited by: johnfowles ] |

Erica, Thank you for that info. I'd not known. But, I sure do understand. I've seen those plains and that valley come to life in my own eyes. I've had the privilege of visiting Israel a number of times as Worship Leader w/ Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa. It's often difficult for folks to understand the deep bond w/ The Land - the literal land - of those whose hearts were born there. As much as I love the land of Colorado and America - my native land - it's different in Israel. Where that literal land joins a soul w/ almost literal roots. I'd read Leon Uris 'Exodus', seen the Paul Newman movie, sung it's marvelous theme - taking the lyric for granted - read The Bible and knew the names of the places. But, not until I touched that land, did I begin to get a grasp of the depth. Each time I returned, the grasping grew. I didn't visit Jeruselem. I went "up to Jeruselem." I'd heard that phrase so many times, but didn't get it until I stood on Mt. Scopus for the first time. Enough Rez. See what reverie you've stirred, Erica. Blessings and thank you. I appreciate the way you described the connection to Israel as for those whose "hearts were born there". Sadly, Ive not yet been to Israel, but I feel it in my heart and my soul every day. Its a part of me, even when I didn't realize it was, its always been there. I think that when I do finally go there, to visit, or maybe even to live, it'll be so overwhelming that I won't be able to bear it. You mentioned "going up"to Jerusalem. You've probably heard the term "making alliyah", which is the Hebrew term for when a Jewish person immigrates to Israel. The term "alliyah" means to ascend, and when someone moves to Israel, they aren't just immigrating, but "going UP" to it. But you probably already knew that :) You've mentioned the wonderful theme song to Exodus...i'm sure you've also heard the Israeli National anthem...HaTikva, which means the hope..and the equally beautiful Yerushalyim Shel Zahav. I think I might have mentioned that once in the fifth grade, at the end of a holocaust memorial presentation our class gave, we sang HaTikva and it was so amazing to realize it in that context, just like it will be the first time I get to sing it in the land that it is about. And now that you've been to Jerusalem, don't the lyrics to Yerushalyim shel zahav resonate all the more?..."The mountain air is clear as wine And the scent of pines Is carried on the breeze of twilight With the sound of bells. And in the slumber of tree and stone Captured in her dream The city that sits solitary And in its midst is a wall. Jerusalem of gold, and of bronze, and of light Behold I am a violin for all your songs..." The song was written in 1967, before the 6 day war, before the reunification of Jerusalem, and like HaTikva, speaks of a yearning, as well as a love for the land. It breaks my heart that there are those who are still trying to split the city and take the land..those that pray with their backs to Jerusalem, who have thousands of miles of their own land, those who's holy book never ONCE mentions the name of Jerusalem, who dare to claim Israel and Jerusalem belongs to them. Kind of reminds one of the false mother in the tale about Solomon's wisdom. She didn't care for the child, she only wanted the TRUE mother not to have it, so she was all too willing to have it cut in two. Its good that that Israel has supporters like you, Rez, who know the truth of who the land belongs to. Wow, this was supposed to be a short post! Well, I really must go now..and again, thank you Rez..for your wonderful words about a wonderful land. Erica [ June 19, 2005, 06:00: Message edited by: Sundreme ] |

To Rez and to Erica,
Thanks for the beautiful expression of your thoughts and feelings on a land many of us will never have the opportunity to see. Erica, the words to Yerushalyim shel zahav which you quoted are indeed beautiful. I wish for you the opportunity to experience first hand the home where your "heart was born". As one who lives in an area to which I have a deep connection, I can sense the yearning in your words...may that yearning be fulfilled for you, and may you have the opportunity to go up to your beloved Jerusalem one fine day. Erica and "Rose of . . ."
I once heard that lovliest of love songs to Jerusalem sung at Yad Vashem - The Israeli Holocaust Museum in the city. It was in the room of endless reflected candles, dedicated to the children, as the names were quietly spoken. Not a performance, just a magnificent outpouring of the heart of one man as he just began to sing. And people began to listen. when he had finished, he quietly stood, then departed. We remained a while longer. The Rez . . . next year in Jerusalem |

For my part I am sorry if my two postings were overlong (I tried hard to make them cohere. But I thought that the Jewish comments it stirred up were worth reading IMHO anyway Well All Right lets get on:- ----------------------------- A great Newsgroup thread now 20 postings long on "Gord's Worst Songs" starts at:- http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...0c5ba13c?hl=en Ed Mullen freshly back from Alaska gave a link to his vacation picture's page in a thread entitled "Believe it or not" starting at:- http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...e20270f3?hl=en and highlighting his impersonation of Sir Sean Connery on the Titanic:- http://mullen.ed.home.comcast.net/titanic01.jpg In some haste as so far today my computer experience is frustrating On my main computer I recently reinstalled Windows 98 ( this being pending the completion (still subject to problems) of a new desktop that will thankfully be Windows XP equipped). This was for the umpteenth time and something that was hitherto relatively trouble free but just to keep me on my toes this time it contrived to remove nearly all the links to the installed programmes and several drivers. The latter is not really a problem just a nuisance but the former was plain annoying so I started reloading the software. All was OK until I faced the daunting prospect of reinstalling the ridiculous HP printer/scanner/copier stuff. not only does it unreasonably demand 2 whopping gigabytes of free space hard to come by on a 5 gig hard drive (one reason for building a new PC with a new 120 gig HD) but no matter what I seem to do I repeatedly get an unhelpful unsuccessful installation message.. go away and boil your head. The galling thing is that I need to get the printer working in order to print out a list of installed program(me)s on Susan's PC which has its own foibles (I had to try to reinstall Windows on hers after just about anything we did on it resulted in a system lock up. Now after at least 16 attempts to reinstall Windows 98 the silly thing refuses to boot to the full windows without suffering a fatal error but it will open in safe mode (no drivers) so at least I can still see the list of progam(me)s that were installed and verify that no files have been lost. ------------------------------- as far as chat goes.
