What a horrible day! Godspeed Johnny! What a good man who influenced and helped millions of people. He's in Heaven with the Lord and is no longer in any pain. He and June are once again united. My prayers are with his family. He was a good man and if I ever had a hero, he would have been it. At least that's what my family always told me. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/frown.gif

Amen. Also John Ritter (from an aortic dissection) - he would have been 55 next week.

What an awful YEAR for actors and entertainers! John Ritter I never respected or cared for...until he suddenly appeared in SLINGBLADE. That changed everything. For whatever reason, Johnny Cash never entered my small world of music, but knowing that he was significant in his big world of music makes his passing tragic. Sometimes our lives seem like those ducks on a conveyer belt at a carnival, with someone always taking shots at us; we never know who will be next to get hit, and when. (Fortunately, among many other advantages, faith in God gives us assurance of something larger than our little selves, and a focus well beyond the sorrows, tragedies and evils of this often insane world.)

I respected Johnny Cash but I loved John Ritter. Comedy, especially the pratfall variety, is very hard to do well. He also did serious movies, indies, stage work, and with his brother Tom raised millions for cerebral palsy research. And from everybody's account was a genuinely NICE man, to fellow actors, fans and anyone else who came across him in life. He will be missed.

Haven't seen it in years, but Lightfoot appeared on the Johnny Cash show long, long ago.

A sad, sad loss. Apart from the "Live in Reno" video/DVD my favourite video is "Highwaymen Live". A high point, for me, is Johnny Cash doing "Ragged Old Flag" he preceeds it with a preamble re; freedoms & rights, of which he is proud, one being the right to burn the flag. The audience register their disapproval, but Johnny goes on to say, "we also have the right to bear arms, if you burn my flag I'll shoot you". The audience loved that. A great artist who will be sadly missed.
If you do not have that video/DVD, get it. |

I have that on VHS as well as "On The Road Again" which was the second Highwaymen VHS. I am in the process of putting the first one on CD so I can listen to it while driving. Great live performance.
I love that part of the concert too! |
It was quite a surprise when I found out about it. I always thought he had a good voice although the only 2 songs I can ever remember him singing are 'Troubador' and 'Don't take your guns to town son'. But I also remember watching an episode on 'Columbo' where he plays as a singer who crashes a plane and kills his annoying wife. I don't know anything else about him though.

Yes it has been a truly mindnumbing day for the entertainment world today. I'm quickly reminded how we almost lost GL a year ago.
Aortic dissection is another word for Abdominal Aortic Aneurism. |

When JC was released Wednesday, he was planning to go to California to finish recording for his new album. It's starting to sink in finally. All day it's kinda not been real.

Hey Watchman,
Al I feel your pain - I've been stunned speechless all day. "Early one morning while making the rounds, etc." I've been playing his tunes all day. Bill http://www.corfid.com/ubb/frown.gif |
Me too. I can't watch the stuff on TV because I have to leave the room. All day I was kinda keeping busy, playing his music etc. and then once it got dark outside, the reality of it started to set in.
I remember how I felt when we were unsure if Lightfoot was going to make it. It felt like somebody shot me in the stomach. This is kinda the same feeling. |
A comment on msn.com today summed up Mr. Cash's impact very well: "he is irreplaceable."

A very sad day, indeed. I thought of you when I heard the news on the radio while driving to work this morning, Watchman. I remembered reading how much you admired Johnny. I've always loved his music and his passion and philosophy on life. I'm a huge fan of his daughter, Rosanne Cash and ex-son-in-law, Rodney Crowell - I know they are all still reeling from the recent loss of June. My thoughts are with the family and the rest of us who feel the pain.

My granddad, DMD1, really like to listen to Johnny. I haven't seen him since Mr. Cash died. I wonder what he thinks about it.

The whole summer has been mind-numbing. In fact mine's kind of like that right now. (No joke.) There's 1 other who passed in the early A.M. of the 11th. Larry Hovis, who played Carter on Hogan's Heroes also passed on at 67 of cancer. He didn't get as big a write up or TV time. In fact, the only TV mention I saw were the words that go across the bottom of the screen on CNN. Of course, the was Charles Bronson too. For my full feelings on all this,go to Small Talk and check my newest thread. I've talked enough about this now. Let us all have a good a day as we can. Bye,now.

That's a beautiful picture of Johnny and June, Al.
I spent most of Friday night watching tributes to Johnny. I really enjoyed the story on CMT, I actually never knew that much about Johnny Cash, the person. From what I saw on CMT, he seemed like a good man and I know he will be greatly missed. [This message has been edited by Oma (edited September 15, 2003).] |

For those of you who might not be aware, Johnny and his daughter Rosanne did a duet of a beautiful song she and her husband wrote for her CD that came out last March. The song is called September When It Comes. It's a beautiful song, actually inspired by the 9/11/01 events, but took on an entirely new meaning when Johnny passed away in September. On the CMT tribute to Johnny Cash, Rosanne did this song with Johnny's part dubbed in and with family photos in the background. It was very touching and the family has now made those photos the "video" for that song. The whole CD, Rules Of Travel, is wonderful and I'd highly recommend it. If you would like to hear this particular song and see the video, go to this link:
