Beautiful: A Tribute To Gordon Lightfoot made an appearance in the March
2004 Acoustic Guitar Magazine Hit List section. It's a short segment, so I'll type it out. >Unlike so many yawn-inducing tribute compilations, this all-star salute to Canada's most beloved folk troubadour is definitely a keeper. An impressive roster of mostly Canadian artists, including Cowboy Junkies (The Way I Feel), Bruce Cockburn (Ribbon Of Darkness), and Ron Sexsmith (Drifters), pays heartfelt homage to a shared influence and hero. It is testament to the depth of Lightfoot's quality of song bag that such staples as Early Morning Rain, Carefree Highway, and Rainy Day People don't appear among the album's tracks and aren't conspicuous by their absence. This set is a fine introduction for those who missed Lightfoot's 1970s commercial heyday and a rootsy revelation for longtime listeners who tuned out the sappy, light rock arrangements that characterized many of his radio hits. wow John, don't shoot the messenger... she was bringing good tidings that unto us was written a revue, that some may find critical and others may adore. Ok? Thanks Cathy. The good news is he was written about and it wasn't all that bad (I think he has probably seen worse things written). And remember I wasn't here if anyone asks.

I don't think John was shooting anybody, but I could recommend a target, if he needs one.
Sappy, to my mind, would actually imply too sweet, such as syrup or tree sap...OR...lacking an edge or bite. Kind of like David Foster producing a Lightfoot tune! (Yes, even Gord can be sappy at times.) |

If any 70s artist was truly sappy it was the 1 hit wonder Morris Albert and his Feelings! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/tongue.gif I've actually listened to that LP all the way through and it's absolutely a barf bag special! The afore mentioned song is truly the only listenable thing on it! The rest is so bad it's no wonder it after 4 years,it still sits at my local record store, still priced at .99 cents with no takers, not even a vinyl-maniac like myself. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Getting back to the real topic here, simply said,it's great to see GL (in any context) get a positive review. Right on! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/cool.gif Been me,later! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif ------------------ Borderstone, gonna post some lines tonight!:D |

yes, I know John was agreeing Cathy.
Sappy is a local idiom that really has no connotation that is good or bad. I really haven't heard anyone use this term in a long time 'though. Cathy, I am not, absolutely not here, ya hear? When I was a kid I remember comments about people who were ascertaining love for another as "sappy", that's not so bad, really. Oh well. Funny how we can relate many of Gords' songs to these idioms, but, in reality most of his lyrics are timeless and wonderful in that quality. John, you wouldn't shoot me would you? Cathy, I liked the comments the article made about Gord having such versatility and influencing so many with his music. Good article. Does anyone remember the Gong Show on TV? Folks representing all depths of the gene pool and ranges of talent sang, danced, juggled, etc. before a panel of celebrity judges with a huge gong behind them. The judges could hit the gong to to stop the act immediately and put the audience out of its misery. Anyway, this one episode consisted of every contestant singing "Feelings"-- and not very well. Since then, any time I hear Morris Albert, I wish I had a gong. |
Oh yeah,I used to watch "The Gong Show" when I was a kid to about age 12. I believe it was cancelled in '80. I think I did see that one long ago and knowing my humor,I'm sure I found it to be silly and funny. Last year, when that movie about Chuck Barris came out,The Game Show Network re-ran some shows and you know what?...Some of those folks sang better than the kids you see on American Idol. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif They were still funny to watch but I no longer found "Chuckie Baby" to be all that funny anymore.
I still think when someone was singing,"You'll Never Walk Alone" and he comes out on crutches, then tosses them aside because he feels the song has given him the power to walk on his own, then falls on his face,it's funny even 25 years later! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif Been me,later! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/cool.gif ------------------ Borderstone, gonna post some lines tonight! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif [This message has been edited by Borderstone (edited January 22, 2004).] |
Cathy, I subscribe to this excellent magazine, and have not yet received the March issue. However checking the web site I note that the appraisel of the Tribute CD appears there. Tell me do you have a copy of the March issue or did you find the review on the website?

Cathy,
I saw that too and to put it mildly, that irritated me a bit. It was a thumb's up for the tribute album, and I feel it was like a cold slap in the face for Gordon!!! I'm going to send them a little polite message and let them know how I feel about it.I've been subscribing to A.G. for a couple years and have always enjoyed it,but that really erked me.{just a note if you or anyone else wants to save a bundle on sub.price for this mag, check out Martin guitars on E-bay,BIG SAVINGS over publisher's price} |

Cathy, thank you for responding to my question, I have received my mag today.
Iron, I do not know how much you can get this mag for via the E bay link, but through String Letter you can get 24 issues for $49.95. The cover price is $4.95, this represents quite a saving. |

Jim
When it is on there, and it most often is,it's 10.oo$ +or- for one year.Of course I did'nt discover this until I paid the renewel price You mentioned.Next time. Val, What did You mean by Who better? Was that a dart or what? |
And by the way,
I did send A.G. a little message and I was pleasently surprised to get an e-mail back the next day from the associate editor,Derk Richardson. He thanked me and added,"From a fellow Gord fan". I thought that was pretty nice of Him. |
I thought that 10.00 price I quoted seemed sorta low,so I checked it out to be sure.Yep,10.99 for one year sub. or renewel.Check out blueskymags at e-bay store. They have quite a selection!!
I also found something that might be of interest to guitar picker's or anyone that likes to keep their arm/s warm.As I was checking out the Martin site on e-bay,I found that someone stole another one of my inventions.{had to be someone watching me play my d-18GL,I'm checking the list of possible suspects} Of course they renamed it "The Sleeve" and offer it for 9.99$ buyitnow price. What it is is a sleeve that you slide on your arm to prevent unwanted noises,and/or in my case to prevent the finish on your guitar from looking like the roads here in Pa. after the salt trucks do there thing. I invented this when I aquired my D-18GL.I named it "The Sock"{with toe cut off}.Mine has a feature that the Sleeve does not have, which is the "heel".You slide the "sock" up yer arm and you put the heel sectoin on yer elbow. "The Sock" Perfect fit,one size fit's all{almost},available in many colors, but mostly white-ish,yellow.Also available with stracheesically placed air vents in elbow section. As a special offer to all pickers on this site,I am offering them for 1.99$each,or 5.99$ for a semi-matched pair or you can mix-n-match.Just specify Vented or Non-vented.Shipping is only 8.98$in the lower 48.[sorry,due to strict international shipping regulation's on used socks,I can only ship to the lower 48.] |
I hate to rain on your parade, Iron, but this invention has been around a lot longer than your D-18GL has.
I kind of like the looks of the John Pearse arm rest. It mount on the top side of the guitar so your arm doesn't rub the finish off. It's also supposed to improve tone and sustain because your arm doesn't make contact with the top, which deadens vibrations, so they claim. Wouldn't help me though, as I find my picking hand is what does the damage. I anchor the heel of my picking hand against the top of the guitar. My D-15 had a shiny spot where my hand hits. Do you suppose I should wear gloves while fingetpicking? That's OK Cathy,I've had many of my parades rained out,but the sun always returns and new buds sprout. John Pearce arm rest??? I don't have a clue on that one.You got me scratchin my head on the resting the palm of yer picking hand on the top?? Do You do this when Your picking or just when Your resting?? Even with a thumb pick I have a hard time getting the picture unless your fingers are 8 inches long with a couple extra joints. You got me again on the "finget" pickin? I'm guessing it must have something to do with the extra joints..I can probably fix You up with a pickin glove, just let me know how many fingets you need in it.... |
Iron,
No darts. I gave them up years ago. What I meant by "Who better (to tell AG to feature more songs from the 609s and 70s) than someone who plays a whole bunch of them". That is, Cathy. The worst you could say of my comment is that I was complimenting Cathy, but I sure wasn't criticizing or making fun of anybody. She griped that they didn't do enough songs from that era, so I said that she would be a perfect person to suggest some. ------------------ Valerie Magee Visit my GL web site at gordonlightfoot.com and Cathy Cowette's site at cathycowette.com |

Iron, here's John's site with some info about the armrest: http://www.jpstrings.com/armrest.htm As far as my picking hand position, It's pretty hard to explain, but I'll give it a try. I don't anchor my ring or pinkie when I fingerpick. For one thing, I pick with three fingers and a thumb, so anchoring my ring finger wouldn't work. I have a hyper-extended wrist. Pretty weird looking, but it works for me. Let me see if I can explain it. I place my fingers on their respective strings, then tilt my wrist in until the heel of my hand is resting in the area above the strings, between the soundhole and bridge. Years and years ago, back in the era of the Delta Blues, many of the old blues players used to do this. It gives the player more volume and hand control. If you look on my website, at the closeup of my hand and guitar, and the picture with me at the picnic table, you'll see what I'm trying to describe. Cathy http://www.cathycowette.com |
Cathy,
After looking at John's armrest site,I do vaguely recall seeing one somewhere.Personally,I prefer the sock, but thanks for the info anyway.I can see from the pictures on your site what you described about your picken positioning and to say the least, and I mean this in a good way,That is pretty unique.I tried it and my thumb almost ends up IN the sound whole. I really was just funning around about the "sock" thing, and the finget's,and the dart thing too,Val.At times I seem to forget that people can't see me laughing when I'm writing stuff ... |
I know the full article is up here already but I just recently got to read it at the newstand at my local supermarket myself. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif
I have to again say,it's great to see Gord being written about. In any positive context! Later! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/cool.gif ------------------ Borderstone, gonna post some lines tonight!:D |
