There isn't an artist anywhere like Gord! But if you had to pick one,who was most like him in style. Who would it be? Frank. |

Frank,
I'm going with the first name that popped into my head as I read your post: Cat Stevens. He wrote very reflectively as Gord does. Actually going back to another topic, I can almost hear Gord singing "Wild World". "Ooh baby, baby it's a wild world. It's hard to get by just upon a smile, girl" Janice (feeling somewhat melancholy today http://www.corfid.com/ubb/frown.gif) |
Moonshadow,Moonshadow... Morning has broken like the... Matthew and son (the works never done...bit like this site really...)!LoL. Cat like Gord ? I don't know, Janice. I'll have to think about one. Maybe a touch... Frank. |

------------------ -----and as i wander to the cities and the towns, i get so lonesome knowin' you could be around. and when the show is over there's a holiday motel, another empty bottle, and another tale to tell---- |

Kristofferson is cut from the same cloth (almost literally -- black jeans & t-shirts!)...I've always thought that Don Quixote sounded like a Cat Stevens song.
Both KK & CS have followed their heart where music & life is concerned...like Gord. |
I'd like to say that John Denver is close to an American Lightfoot. Jim Croce, had he lived, would also. I understand that Croce wanted to emulate Lightfoot, but in the sixties, during Vietnam, it was tough for him to write the kind of songs about America that Lightfoot was writing about Canada. I'll go further out on my limb here, and say that some of Denver's signature songs, like "Country Roads," would sound great with the Lightfoot touch.

Bob - Croce and Chapin - what could they have done if they had been able to!
Great lyrics and stories from Chapin and Croce with his humour. And John Denver! - how about Ricky Nelson - Garden Party? Char |

Before I read the posts, only the topic, I immediately thought of Harry Chapin (God rest his soul).
The ability to bring a song into a story, to bring the characters to life, and to let the listerner feel as if he is involved somehow in the story being told...that's Harry and Gord. I was fortunate enough to see Harry Chapin in Framingham, MA, just 3 months before he died, and he was so good, so into what he did...still miss him. |

Of coarse Gord is in a class by himself, but the only other people that remind my of his style is Bob Dylan. Not his protest or spiritual songs, but his albums like NEW MORNING(i.e. "Forever Young" etc.) or BLOOD ON THE TRACKS, however Gordon has much more romance in his writing. I also agree with Bob, that John Denver reminds me of Gordon too, not his voice, but his relationship with nature. (i.e. "Sunshine on my Shoulders" "Calypso")

I have to agree with Bob. John Denver comes the closest to Gord that I can imagine. I like the way he tagged him as being the American Lightfoot. I think John would have been proud of that title had he lived. Jim Croce would be right up there as well.

Great question !!!!I don't think anyone is quite like Lightfoot. Cat Stevens is a good pick, but for me, I'd say Jackson Browne. I know that their music is nothing alike, but, for sheer poetry of lyrics. Kristofferson is aaalso an excellent choice.

Good answers all around. Now, you might have to dig for this oe, because he lacked the hits and thus his HUGE collection of songs is one the better kept secrets - try John Stewart. In particular he sketched teh US the way Lightfoot does Canada. Great stuff. Any record collection that does not contain John Stewart's "California Bloodlines" is not complete.

I agree, Jim Croce is closest to the sound of Gord you could possibly get. If you listen to "Thursday" and "Age" he sounds a lot like Gord.

Most like Lightfoot . . . it has to be Jimmy Buffett. No American writes like Jimmy: songs of the sea, love, drinking. Buffett is a God.

This is a reeply to fezo re: John Stewart, I've got about 7 of his albums. You are right"Calafornia Bloodlines" is a classic. Also, "Cannons in the rain" and "Oklohoma Sunstorm", great artist and very similar to Lightfoot as far is consistancy

After seeing the Behind the Music on Cat Stevens, and noting the dates on his major offerings, I'm more convinced that there was some influence on Gord's early/mid seventies material. But I've never seen where Gord was asked something like this in an interview.

I think John Stewart is the one artist most like Gord. Fezo,Joe,Which album do you rate second to 'Bloodlines' Frank. |

Let's not forget the great Greg Brown, especially songs like "Poet Game".
