Just picked off Song Fora Winter's Night off WinMX by Sarah McLachlan, she did an excellent version of it, so much that even Jann Arden might copy it if she were willing to. Also found a cover of Early Morning Rain by Mystic Moods, my gawd they butchered it, they turned it into elevator music is all I can say!

Gord:
Sarah's version is on the CD titled "Miracle on 32nd St" (I think that's the title!) if I'm not mistaken...yesss, it's a beautiful version!

Yet another cover of a 'Lightfoot' classic.
A singer/songwriter here in the UK, Gordon Haskell, has a new album coming out which includes 'If You Could Read My Mind'
This version can be heard on the net for 1 week. Call up www.bbc.co.uk/radio2 click on HEAR IT AGAIN. On the list find 'Parkinson on Sunday'. The song starts at about 39 mins into the program. I would be interested in any comments

First, to Colorado Sue, yes Cathy is an amazing talent. Whereever she plays, people are blown away by her voice and her fingerpicking. For my part, I'll just say I picked a good teacher!

I just realized that none of us ever posted here about the party/house concert at my house next month. I've started another thread on that. There is another one of Cathy's recordings linked in that message; on that one, River Of Darkness, Derek Kidd - who has also posted here - has added his lead guitar and bass. They play the song live, of course, and that is one of the Lightfoot songs they will do at the concert.

Second, to Watchman, since Cathy doesn't get online as often as she'd like, I'll answer your question. SDYS is not a song that she sings; likewise with DQ (but Derek does a great job on that one, with Cathy accompanying - I'm sure they will do that one at the concert). She plays both of them beautifully, as you can imagine, with the bridge in SDYS, and the Red Shea sound in DQ.

If you twist my arm, I'll post some more links to Cathy's recordings.

OK, I presume you found ROD in the other post, but if not here it is:
www.mageenet.net/ROD-addedmix5.mp3 (Ribbon Of Darkness, with Derek Kidd)

Plus:
www.mageenet.net/CathyCowette-HeavenHelpTheDevil.mp3 www.mageenet.net/CathyCowette-ImNotSayin.mp3

And some non-Lightfoot, but well worth listening to:
www.mageenet.net/CathyCowette-LeaderOfTheBand.mp3 (Fogelberg) www.mageenet.net/CathyCowette-TimeInABottle.mp3 (Croce) www.mageenet.net/CathyCowette-DontThinkTwice.mp3 (Dylan)

Cathy and Derek also do a great job on The Boxer and DQ. Hopefully we'll get them to record those for us soon. Maybe in Saratoga!

Val, thanks for the link to Cathy's music! Also, I gotta say that your web site is GREAT!!! I can get lost there listening to clips of GL's songs. I've been a fan of GL for years, but never even knew about 75% of his work until I ended up at your site and this message board...Thanks again!!!

Cathy, I just listened to your version of "Song for a Winter's Night"...what can I say??!! Wow!! That song is my absolute, long time favorite GL song ever...you sure did a beautiful rendition of it! I love the sound of your guitar playing...what a wonderful talent!

After listening to your recording, I have the urge to pick up my 11 yr. old's cheap, six string guitar, get a copy of "Guitar playing for Dummies", and start learning how to play!!! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hi Oma,

Welcome! And I'm glad you found this discussion group and my web site. I hope you signed up for my mailing list too. I don't send mail often (and don't give out the e-mail addresses to anyone), but I do send occasional updates that I don't always have time to post here. And I am happy to hear that those clips have been put to good use; that's why they are there.

If you decide to give in to that temptation to pick up your 11 year-old's guitar and learn how to play, drop me an e-mail. I am just doing the same myself. I started on a used Yamaha. Nice and cheap, but with good strings it actually sounded decent and was easy to play. Well, "easy" is a relative thing. Now I play my D-18GL. Even with me playing, you can tell what a great sound that guitar has.

Anyhow, I take lessons from a local teacher, but I have learned most of what I know from Cathy. I started with two songs, Sit Down Young Stranger and Song For A Winter's Night. Like many GL songs, they are fingerpicked, Travis-style, which is harder to start with than strumming, but those were the songs I wanted to play. I still don't play them either "well" or "at full speed", but they are recognizable and I enjoy it immensely. I can share with you what I have learned, if you decide to take the plunge. And, trust me, I am no musical talent at all. I'm just plugging away, and enjoying the process of learning. On SFAWN, the harder of the two to play (for me, at least), I am just at the point of trying to learn that great intro Cathy does, a combination that sounds like Gord's rhythm guitar plus what Red Shea did. Cathy is very inventive!

Hi Val, Thanks for the reply to my post...I may just take you up on your offer of guitar playing tips!!!

Oh, what's a "capo"? I sometimes see that word here when guitars are mentioned. Also "tableture" (sp?)?

Thanks for the info, Watchman. I think I know what Tablature means now, I've seen the little drawings on guitar music and above the staff on piano music, just didn't know what it was called!

I didn't know what a capo was either, but I'm pretty sure now that you described it, I have an idea of what you're talking about. Hmmm, you say it's used to change the key...I wonder if that's the reason why when I try to play the GL guitar chords I've seen (and I think I'm thinking of "tablature" now)on the piano, they don't sound right?

Don't know if I worded that right, but maybe somebody out there knows what I'm trying to say! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

gord uses a capo in the 2nd and 3rd fret in most of his songs (and i'm still positive that he plays Cabaret with a capo on the 3rd fret for the first part and then unclips it as he cracks open the beer!)

i like to stuff around with his songs on guitr as well but no matter how hard i try i can never finger pick properly. when it comes to picking songs, i usually strum a bit lighter :)

recorded myself doing the Auctioneer once for fun, but that will never see the light of day!

joveski 10-28-2002 03:00 PM

not sure about going out of tune. i play on my own, so i wouldn't know if it affects the rest of the band.

and no, the auctioneer is an unreleased demo! none of my $25 dollar bids will see the light of day!

vlmagee 10-28-2002 04:06 PM

Oma,

A little more clarification on some of your questions. First if you are curious about the capo - and specifically which Gord uses and recommends - you can visit the Shubb web site here: www.shubb.com . Gord uses the Shubb deluxe (pictured in the upper left hand corner). If you are going to learn to play his music, get a capo and preferably a Shubb.

On going out of tune, Gord is talking about the strings going out of tune, not about the relationship to the band. He will move the capo exactly once - from the 2nd fret to the 3rd fret. He does this at the end of almost every show, and uses one of the songs that is capoed on the 3rd fret as his last 6 string song. He doesn't move the capo on the 12 string, and actually uses two different guitars, one in each set. With twice as many strings, you can expect at least twice as many potential problems in moving the capo, so Gord simply doesn't. How well the guitar strings stay in tune is also a characteristic of the capo itself. Some capos (from other manufacturers) are much more likely to throw your guitar out of tune. You normally tune before you put the capo on. With some capos, you find you are fighting with the guitar to get it sound right.

What you see pictured above the staff is the chord diagram and not tablature. The chord diagram shows you the fingering on the fretting hand; that is, where you press the strings to get the note you want for each one of them. Tablature gives you that information (in a different way, via a number), but it also tells you which string or strings you play (with your other hand) for each beat within each measure. What it doesn't give you is the timing, so you have to know that in order to play the song properly. Ideally, you should have both, of course. Most songbooks have chord diagrams, but do not have tablature, which takes a lot more space as each beat of the measure is shown. It is normally shown below the staff for each "line" of music, and books with tab show only the treble clef (at least the ones I have seen). Books without tab show the full piano music and the chord diagrams.

Two years ago I knew none of this! If only my fingers learned as quickly as my head does.

Watchman: Not yet! I did record a little bit about 4 months ago, but I was recording on my laptop with only the built in mic and the sound level was really low. Plus, that was 4 months ago and I have actually improved significantly since then. BUT, that is not to say I can actually PLAY any song. I can play the first half of SDYS at about 3/4 speed, then the bridge - slightly off rhythm - at about half speed - and the second half at about half speed too. I can do the hammer ons in the first half pretty well, and the song is recognizable, but - trust me - you don't want to hear it yet. I am about to get some decent recording equipment, so we have it for when Cathy and Derek play at our concert next month, so maybe I'll record a clip just to make every other beginner feel more confident. As I said in my last post here, my head is a lot quicker than my fingers.

Cathy, how much of Lightfoot's music can you play? Is there any particular song that gives you trouble? The finger picking is excellent!

I don't know how many I can play. I've never really counted them all. I think if I were to sit down and try, I could play most of them. The one that gives me the most trouble is The Way I Feel, the acoustic version.

Cathy

Thanks for the info, Val!
Sometimes I use the "chord diagram" above the staff when I play the piano! I am o.k. at reading piano music for the right hand, but terribly slow at reading music for the left hand, so sometimes I "cheat" and use the guitar chord diagram to make chords with my left hand to go along with the right hand melody! Now I guess I need to start using the chord diagram as it was intended...for the guitar!! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif
