Little Quiz for guitar players. In this Google photo, Gord is using only his index finger, to make my favorite guitar chord. What chord do you think it is? :)

Fairly easy I know... ;) :)

He's not using a flat pick so it wouldn't be a song like "In My Fashion" or "Old Dan's Records" he's playing here. I would guess he's picking out the guitar work in "Don Quixote" as it's hard to determine the little finger is not working in this photo. Very nice pic. Ron J.

Jesse Joe 02-03-2007 02:53 PM

Thank's Ron... :) Id say the little finger is not pressing a string, but the side of that little finger might be playing a role. This is the way I play this chord. But it is not the way it is taught...
Cathy are you around here? tell us this chord... :)

Cathy 02-03-2007 03:52 PM

It's an A. He always plays a mini barre chord on A.

Station Master 02-03-2007 03:54 PM

joe, i'll still place my money on him more specifically coming out of a B7sus4 chord while performing 14 Karat Gold

when he came out and opened with that, i was hanging on every chord change and so nervous for him, since it was live... it's a great photo for sure

of course, he's playing in the A formation, but capo is +2 frets ...anyhow, better get confirmation from ron and the rest of the real pros ...fun game:)

Cathy your so right it is the 'A' chord. ;) Pressing down the 2nd, 3rd and 4th string on the 2nd fret. It is taught, to use fingers 1,2,and 3.

But of course the mini barre, makes it easier..

Joni Mitchell plays a lot that way, going up and down the fingerboard, also using her thumb. :(

That would explain how she's able to play with those long finger nails... :D

I hear she does a special tuning, for it to work. And she's been quoted as saying, "it's very tuff on the guitar neck"... :)

but according to my math, he's pressing down on the 4th fret, not the 2nd

capo players who call out the chords at jams make bassists, keyboardists and naked guitarists (capo-less) go crazy, lol...it's a B chord

this game got too complicated, lol...

ok, payback time...what this chord?:

(ok, i realize that judging by his expression the right answer could be "the wrong chord!" lol)

New 12 String Mike 02-03-2007 07:44 PM

I too learned to play an A chord that way.

It allows lots of variations since the other fingers are free.

He uses that fingering in lots of songs from Restless to Long Way Back Home.

RM 02-03-2007 09:38 PM

Here's a wild guess...since it appears that he is capoed between the 2nd and 3rd fret, and I can't tell what his left index finger is doing, I'm gonna say E9suspended sentence. Is that from "Canary Yellow Canoe" ?

Jesse Joe 02-04-2007 08:53 AM

Is there a confirmation here, for that 1st pic.

jj I have no idea what that chord is on the 2nd pic. Ron might be right. Or you jj the wrong chord... :D

that's interesting regarding Restless and LWBH, love em both! and i think RMD right on the E9 hunch (or or E9 +3 = G9 if you want to join the anal crowd:))...no clue if that's CYC, i only ever listened that 1x

i only can cope with 2nds, 4ths, 6ths, maj or dom 7ths...i lose count when you get to 9, 11, 13ths

credit for that clear B&W photo goes to wendell phillips, no relation to wilson

that Harmony pic is tough to zoom in on but looks like my fave chord and leave to someone else for #3

hey, as you capo-ers know, the entire album is played with capo on 2nd fret...wish Gord would play the entire album for a set and wouldn't have to worry about going out of tune:)

#4 ...don't want to hijack your quiz, joe but what's the name of this one? ;)

http://previews.nvtech.com/175/tf050...h_peop2522.jpg

...definitely NOT my fave to grip!
