Q61 - No Mistake About It
Q64 - Brave Mountaineers |
Re: GL Lyrics fan(atics) fun quizzers and more !
formerlyLavender gets two of them, well-done.. hehe to tell you the truth, from the time I wrote the 6 earlier, I forgot which one I heard "suppertime" in my head on, and had to consult the ultimate internet companion - Wayne Francis' site and remember , yes it was Brave Mountaineers - my favourite "Childhood" song". lol And, "No Mistake About it" is a very singular, if not haunting refrain from that song by that name, it keeps echo'ing in it , and in the background, kind of eerie. You know, Gordon has a recurrent theme of the term "mistake, or is it just me...as in mistake in this song, "a mistake you better not make it twice" - something like that in COTS - I wonder if that is a painful reminder for him of something....who knows. we're in this room for fun.
So, that leaves:Q's:62,63,65,66 harder ones this time all 6 ~geo steve |
Re: GL Lyrics fan(atics) fun quizzers and more !
Q62 - Morning Glory
Q66 - I'll Tag Along |
Re: GL Lyrics fan(atics) fun quizzers and more !
RM: You got me on an ambiguous case! I'll Tag Along" -yes of course, the smoke rings..... I forgot about that one... I thought I had a hard-to-get, obscure one with "The Soul is the Rock" , and the line in this part:
The soul is the rock and the rock will always roll In circles 'round the sun doing rings around the pole When the mind is not sure what the heart will do next The rock becomes the master and the road becomes what's left Thats the only time I am looking things up - on Wayne Francis' Site (when I'm doing this), is when there is an ambiguous case I have to verify when its not the one I intended. But sure enough , you are right (you knew that lol), for others benefit: This time tomorrow we might all be packed and gone I believe it's best we carry on Smoke rings rising til they disappear In the sky above If you ask me I'll tag along You got me..... And of course Morning Glory is right, too. OK so that leaves just Q's 63 & 65: Q63......looms..... Q65......stairway.... not stair, stairs, or staircase if the Q arises...those (3)are other songs!) - the reason I know....is it occurred to me that not only was "rings" that Ron got on an ambiguous case, I got to thinking of the other clues remaining. Stairway is ambiguous to my knowledge only in its root forms and tenses - such as stair, stairs, stairwell, etc. In other forms -stair, the singular case, is ambiguous , in 2 songs, and....stairs [plural case] is ambiguous, and staircase appear in 3 distinct other songs. So, we are looking for that (one I believe) song with "stairway" . The only reason I am sure now, reasonably, is its the only time I DO look in the lyrics tables of Wayne Francis' site, or alt.music.lightfoot search, that is, when I have an ambiguous case that comes up when someone guesses a song I had not envisioned, and it turns out to be ambiguous. Otherwise, I enjoy doing this off-the-cuff as do you I suspect. The answer to the clue stairway by song name is a surprise I did not intend, but having made the clue, Its not fair to change it of me. You'll know what I mean when you figure out stairway. ~geo steve |
Re: GL Lyrics fan(atics) fun quizzers and more !
hey guys,
that got your attention... I think we're played out on interest.... I'll stop posting more..... unless, comparitively sleaking, I am flooded with msgs....somehow I doubt it lol..... the last two questions ...loom... "my father loom(s) (oops) above me.. thats why you guys didn't get Sit Down Young Stranger".... and ........stairWAY.... from COTS CD: "The Soul Is the Rock": Say what you like to do what you can, live like a sheep, die like a lamb Bats in the roof, cats in the hall, dust on the stairway, gnats on the wall Big rain coming, big rain coming this way Rain on the rock, rain on the rock, rain on the rock So, that closes out 61 - 66. Lemme know if you want to do more, as of now we are about 3 days into no activity 'cept one or 2 - thanks guys I had fun ~geo steve |

Q72 - Too Late For Prayin'
|
Re: GL Lyrics fan(atics) fun quizzers and more !
RM ....LOL.... I like that response... have I been....using the font size and colors..a little too much.... lol ? Your answer, RM, is correct ! "stem" for Q72 - from 'Too Late For Prayin' .
It's interesting to me, what with all the previous discussion of "stemming", that maybe Lightfoot himself is also defining it by alternately using its root - "stem" - the tide, or to , as in programming (there's a stretch) stem or stemming is to conflate, or condense, or reduce to its smallest recognizable form eg stemming gets "stemmed" in programming likely to "stem". And to stem the tide, websters says " Main Entry: stem Function: transitive verb Inflected Form(s): stemmed; stem·ming Etymology: Middle English (Scots) stemmen to keep a course, from stem (of a ship) Date: 1593 1 : to make headway against (as an adverse tide, current, or wind) 2 : to check or go counter to (something adverse) — stem·mer noun so. to "stem" the tide in Q72's song, would literally be to make headway against the tide, but maybe metaphorically, in the song, 'to stem the tide of broken dreams' - would be to , as in #2 above in the definition = to check or to counter..the tide of.... broken dreams...etc... I wonder if that in any way leads to Lightfoots use of stemming ? aha - in the Visual Thesaurus - which makes a map of synonyms or miildly related words the father way from the word of choice... stemming.. in this case.... very close to it..is quite simply (scottish) (which Lightfoot has said he is of Scots origin..) "to take" as "take the gold that falls in the bar" - whaddya think ? stem means the same thing as one of the visual thesaurus many, many synonyms, but take is close in proximiy in the word map to stem, so they say its a primary synonym...., Sounds reasonable to me.....for stemming gold.... Thanks RM lol i get it..... ~geo steve |
