My favourite line in IYCRMM .... "I walk away like a movie star who gets burned in a three way script"
i actually did not care that much for that song until recently, after the Songbook came out. i never bothered to listen to it much before then because i wasn't really compelled to, but after songbook came out i rediscovered it, good song.

You and I agree on our favorite: "Beautiful".
(If you notice, my profile signature words contain those lyrics.) I never get tired of hearing it, and still get a buzz even now. If you read through other postings of mine, you'll see some references to it throughout my life.
What an all-time classic love tribute!

I love This Site. Great Topic!

Here are mine...

I think of my little girl every time when I hear Fine As Fine Can Be

"Your as soft as a rose, your as sweet as the honey, your as warm as the bright morning sun. Your as cool as the breeze, on the last days of April, your as fine as fine can be... And when I am gone, my thoughts are all with you, your my little angel you see...

Every verse of Sit Down Young Stranger

"and in a blaze of tangeld hooves, he gallops off across the dusty plain, in vain to search again, but no one will hear...

This is extremely difficult, ther are so many
to choose from.

"All is well, I've made my peace where highways never end. Yesterdays a memory, today is but a friend...

Theotterjudy and Char:

Although I can't imagine anyone else covering "Beautiful," I would like to hear someone try. A truly great song permits various interpretations.

For example, Gord's cover of "Me and Bobby McGee" is similar to but better than the Kris Kristopherson (spelling?) original and utterly different from Janice Joplin's huge hit.

Also, last summer's disco version of IYCRMM, which I found difficult to listen to, nevertheless made the song accessible to my teenage daughter, who now likes to listen to Gord's original version.

If "Beautiful" were performed by someone like Jewel, Boyz2Men or SavageGarden, it might be interesting. It could never replace or equal Gord, but it would open up his music to a new generation.

In addition to all the great lines already posted, how about:

Oh how I wish your heart could see
How mine just aches and breaks all day.

I've watched the country growin' like a fair and mighty thing. . .

And the people rise in anger
And the streets begin to fill
And there's gunfire from the rooftops
And the blood begins to spill!

I'm not sayin' that I'll do
The things you want me to
I'm not sayin' I'll be true
But I'll try!

The big drive wheels are poundin' all along the ground
Gonna get on board and I'll be homeward bound!

Guess we all got problems of our own to bear
But still we share tomorrow
Could get better
Than today

Go my way, it's the only way to go
If things aren't working out, you'll be the first to know
Come on along and together wee'll go
Please love me
And say that you'll be mine!!!

I guess it just goess on and on.

As much as I like Gord's version of Bobby Magee, I love the feelings that Kris puts into it - especially when he I've seen him perform it in concert. Knowing his trials and tribulations puts pictures in my mind and Kris is the vision I see. His voice is definately not on par with Gord's but I feel the song when I hear Kris do it. He never knew Janis Joplin had recorded it until after her death - they had been "dating" prior to that and he has said he loves her version.

I read through many of the posted favorite lyrics, yet did not see this one: There's peace in the garden, peace in the air, peace in the sound of the river. There's peace in the meadow, the sun shines like gold, and if she were with me, there'd be peace in my soul. Of course when I sing it, it's a he, not a she, that I long for.

Stacy -

My May 11 posting listed that lyric as one of Gord's greatest, so we are on the same wavelength on this one. I have the advantage of preserving the gender as written.

I associate this lyric with a 5-month solo backpack trip I took in Europe after college. Sort of the equivalent of an Australian walkabout. (Didn't get as far as Vienna on that one, tho I've been there since.) The lyrics of many of Gord's songs were my traveling companions during those days. "Sometimes it did get lonely but it taught me how to cry ... " "Is the ice still in the river? Are the old folks still the same? And by the way ..."

The song also evokes memories of a few wonderful and special people who were almost (but not quite) the right persons for me to have married. Unfortunately, a few of their (and my) "same old obsessions" kept us apart.

For the record, I also had one of those "Betty Called Me In" relationships, but I have different memories of that one.

No regrets. There was too much to lose for me to stay around. But since then I've found someone to whom I can say "I was made for you as you were made for me."

As I hope you have.

"Now the thing that I call living is just being satisfied knowing I've got no one else to blame."

Is this one of the greatest lines in any song?

Any others?

Frank.

It shows a great sense o knowing ones self and being responsible for yourself.
Bobby Magee - nothin ain't worth nothin - but it's free" Kristofferson
have to throw this in - "If the phone doesn't ring - it's me" - jimmy Buffett
