Because she wants to make a point.

Because she wants to make a point. If she took it completely down and made it unavailable, most people would just think she's having a server problem and that the site will eventually be back up. Can you imagine all the e-mail she would get? She has at least 8000 Lightfoot fans on her mailing list, and everyone of them would be e-mailing her to tell her there's something wrong with gordonlightfoot.com. The withdrawn message finalizes it. It's gone for good, whether we like it or not. She's put over 2000 hours of work into that sight since it's inception. I'd say she's paid her dues. It's time for someone else to pick up the torch. But dont ask for her pages, or offer to host it and keep it updated. She took a lot of pride in her work, and there is no way she'd give it away. It was done as a labor of love, both for Gord's music and for the fans. For six years she kept us informed and brought us together, and now she deserves a rest. I can say though, she didn't take it down because of pressure to turn the domain name over. She's said there were disappointments along the way, not having a good flow of information, not getting approval from Linus to sell the CD from her site. How many of us would have bought from her? Probably more than a few. Running a fan site is a very thankless job. I don't see too many posts where we jumped in and told her thanks. I'm as guilty of it as anyone. And I really doubt that Linus or EMP gave her much encouragement. I know that Gord thanked her just about every time we went backstage. He seemed to be truly appreciative of her hard work and support. My big fear is that eventually someone else will register gordonlightfoot.com and just let it sit there and rot, or do a website that isn't worthy of his talent and long career. We all know Val's site was from the heart. The information was accurate. The updates were timely. I don't think the average webmaster, someone who isn't a true fan, will put the effort into it that she did. Like the old Joni Mitchell song says, "You don't know what you got til it's gone." I do wish people wouldn't speculate about what happened. My God, by the looks of some of these posts, we need to reincarnate Perry Mason! When Val sees fit, maybe she will give us more of an explanation. Or maybe not. She sure doesn't owe us anything. I might get hammered for this but, whatever..
could it be that someone in Gord's organization really pissed Val off to the extent that she pulled the plug on a very good, respectful, well organized and researched website? I would even entertain the idea that Mr. Lightfoot has not one whit of an idea that this is going on. He prefers to stay on the sidelines when it comes to internet reverence of his career and contributions. Is it possible that for all the very much deserved praise and gratitude we have expressed towards Linus Entertainment, that they are behind what pissed off Val so much? Just speculating.... |

More things are connected than most of us would like to believe. |
Hmmm?
Bilderberg and the giant lizards! I'd never have twigged that one. |
Jimmy Hoffa might be found as well.

You're either though with the whole debacle or you're not. <snip> Uh, I doubt it's for sentimental reasons. More likely it's to prevent it from falling into the hands of those scavengers that buy up dormant domain names and use 'em for porn sites. EMP would be smart to buy the rights to the name when the present lease runs out, even if they never plan on using it. |
I promise, no attempt to be snooty..just help educate. There is no such word as irregardless. You can use regardless or irrespective. Again, no slam intended.

I may be wrong but it seems like here we go again: rant & rave and then delete the post leaving later readers to wonder what the heck this thread is talking to. It's funny how the quotes stay after you delete the original post. Maybe decaf might help.

It doesn't make sense for someone to rant and rave when they don't know the details. Cathy http://www.cathycowette.com |

My apologies, you're right. Now if we can figure out what "nonstandard English" really is....

Valerie: Very saddened to see your site offline, particularly at this time when there is renewed interest in Gord and his music. I hope one day you will be reposting it. Thanks for all the great Gord coverage you've given us! SUIM I agree Bernd from Germany |
Hi Bernd(?) welcome, another country heard from!! I don't think we have anyone else from Germany. Is Gord popular there? Please tell us how you came to be a Gord fan.
|
Hi, I'm german too but do live in Minneapolis now - moved here last summer from Pittsburgh...( came to the US in 2000 )
Unfortunately Gordon is not that popular in Germany. But when I picked up the guitar two years ago, I rembembered that my Dad had a Lightfoot LP and I always liked the music. So I bought the complete greatest Hits and fell in love with it instantly. I bought all the other Albums and are hooked ever since. There's barely a day now without Gordons music - my 3 year old twins get an early "brainwash"... Well, that's just my little story how I became a "Lighthead" I'm happy I found that newsgroup with all the great people here who share my love for this great music! Claudia |
Well, hello friends...I guess i feel a little like Gord did coming out of that coma/time-warp, thankfully, without the pain....used to be a regular here some years ago, had a great time and was amazed that there were actually others out there who lived and died with Gord's music, from time to time, like I did. I took a quick look around tonight and it seems some of the original suspects are still here....Char, Silverheels, 2much and I think that cryptic electrical engineer from Moab, Utah is here also. Don't mean to bore all you others who I don't know, but when you haven't posted in three years it just like some other things in life...just kinda like the feel of doing it again!
But...how I got back here today, was how I landed here back in 2000 also...via Val Magee. Her's was the first GL site I found back then, led me to Florian's Austrian garden here and in many ways, changed parts of my life since then. I think I can safely say, that if Val had not had and maintained her website...and it was a masterpiece...I would have never found Corfid and would have never met Gord. I had the incredible pleasure of meeting Gord and his band for the first time, not far from Val's backyard...a day I'll never forget...and then I became almost a 'regular' backstage at several more concerts. Fittingly, the last time I saw Gord's face, we were sitting in the front row or my Alma Mater's Auditorium, where he had just finished a two night stand. We talked like old friends, he modestly deflected any compliments...and then, he decided that he best be on his way. That was also the last song I heard him play...Early Moring Rain. I sensed that night, that for whatever reason, it would be the last concert, of perhaps 15 or 20 that I had attended. Whether he ever performs live again or not...and forgive me, if I'm not up on the latest news...it has been a great ride, great memories and of course the music goes with me everywhere. But, had it not been for Val's diligent, selfless efforts over many years, I wonder how many of us would have missed so much of what we came to experience...from her news items, concert details to referrals here. It may seem insignificant at times, but there are also many, many times when I silently thank people like Val, Florian and Char for making such a wonderful effort, for the benefit of us all. So Val...this is yet another lengthy, nostalgic salute to you, likely boring to others....but you are/were a fellow Nutmegger, I thank you for all your time, effort and expense and please know, that I will always be proud to have met you and for having you point me to Gord's backstage door...and a place that I call home. Besh wishes always and don't become a stranger! |
