"Too Late For Prayin" would be nice.
I agree with you Ann...."I'll Be Alright" and "Affair on 8th Avenue" would be great to hear also.

Oh yes, Nightingale, I meant to include Too Late for Prayin' - definitely!:)

Trying to pick one song is just impossible. The man's work is truly awesome!

I like when Gord rotates a "rarity" into the set lists. Now that it appears that he will not record original materials, I think one or two rotations into the set lists keeps fans really fresh. My favorites "surprises" from past tours:

1979: Bend in the Water
1980: Now and Then, Betty Called Me In, Mr. Rock of Ages
1982: Canary Yellow Canoe, Cherokee Bend
1984: Last Time I Saw Her Face; I'm Not Supposed to Care
1988: Pussywillows, Cattails; Race Among the Ruins
1989: Forgive Me, Lord; If It Should Please You
1993: Wild Strawberries, Welcome to Try (new songs at the time)
1997: Ode to Big Blue, Knotty Pine
1998: On Susan's Floor
1999: I'll Do Anything
2001: Let It Ride
2002: Sit Down Young Stranger, Ring Neck Loon
2005: Bitter Green, Morning Glory, Spanish Moss
2007: If Children Had Wings, My Little Love

I know that he did "That Same Old Obsession" and "On the High Seas" in the late 1990's, but I missed them. Darn.

If I had a wish list of what five songs I would have liked to have heard sometime in concert:

Seven Island Suite
Tattoo
Inspiration Lady
A Passing Ship
Too Late for Praying

I'm just grateful all the CDs are out now. Let's hope he puts out the "Best of Massey Hall (1967-2008)" later this year !!

I'm hoping he does "I'll Tag Along" again at Massey like he did in Tampa in February!

"Poor Little Allison" This is the very first Lightfoot song I heard on the radio back in 1971.

Hi seafarer62,

Not sure about any of the other years, but Gordon started rotating in "If Children Had Wings" and "My Little Love" in 2008.

Re: if you could make Gord introduce one "obscure" song into his concert rotation?

In 1999, he rotated Forgive Me Lord back in, after a hiatus of more than a decade, and also introduced Heaven Don't Deserve Me which I believe he had never performed in concert before. Both songs are on Songbook. I made several attempts to convince him to do Too Much To Lose, but he has never done that one. I can still hope ...

Likely never happen, but Ballad of Yarmouth Castle.

Love the song and the lyrics ..... but from what I am told, he does not want too many ship songs in any concert .... hell, I could listen to BYC and The Wreck back to back .... that's be awesome IMO.

Re: if you could make Gord introduce one "obscure" song into his concert rotation?

I hate to call it obscure but I'd love to hear Second Cup Of Coffee done live. Failing that I'd certainly enjoy Go Go Round...

Alone upon the sidewalks of despair
'Twas there she wandered
With her suitcase in her hand
Her fate she pondered
Only a go-go girl in love with someone who didn't care
She met him on a night so rare when her friends were there
And the band was groovin'

Bill :)

Complimentary “You Can't Roller Skate In A Buffalo Herd” Ringtone

Ya can't roller skate in a buffalo herd
Ya can't roller skate in a buffalo herd
Ya can't roller skate in a buffalo herd
But you can be happy if you've a mind to

Ya can't take a shower in a parakeet cage
Ya can't take a shower in a parakeet cage
Ya can't take a shower in a parakeet cage
But you can be happy if you've a mind to

All ya gotta do is put your mind to it
Knuckle down, buckle down, do it, do it, do it

Well, ya can't go a-swimmin' in a baseball pool
Ya can't go swimmin' in a baseball pool
Ya can't go swimmin' in a baseball pool
But you can be happy if you've a mind to

Ya can't change film with a kid on your back
Ya can't change film with a kid on your back
Ya can't change film with a kid on your back
But you can be happy if you've a mind to

Ya can't drive around with a tiger in your car
Ya can't drive around with a tiger in your car
Ya can't drive around with a tiger in your car
But you can be happy if you've a mind to

All ya gotta do is put your mind to it
Knuckle down, buckle down do it, do it, do it

Well, ya can't roller skate in a buffalo herd

There are SO MANY, that its hard to pick, but four I'd really like to see/hear him do would be:
1) I'd rather press on (Is there a better song? - from the 'Waiting for you' album).
2) Its worth beliveing (Old Dan's records).
3) H'way songs (Old Dan's records).
4) Biscuit City (Salute).

Crossroads....Unsettled Ways and A Long Way Back Home. Great songs that I have grown to love.

Patti,
there's a little more wisdom in that Roger Miller song than most of us would admit...lol.
I remember when he sang that and it always made me smile.

Re: if you could make Gord introduce one "obscure" song into his concert rotation?

Ah yes....Miller was a classic. Who can forget:

"My Uncle used to love me but she died
A chicken ain't chicken til it's lickin' good fried
Keep on the sunny side
My Uncle used to love me but she died".

That buffalo song always made me feel good too. I know it wasn't obscure, but hadn't heard it for a while. I was kidding around about Gordie singing it, but it makes me smile just thinking about it.

Nightingale 05-02-2008 02:15 AM

Re: if you could make Gord introduce one "obscure" song into his concert rotation?

Hey, if it makes us smile then it's all good....

RM...."My uncle used to love me but she died".
I don't remember that one....lol. I remember "Dang Me" and "King of the Road" but nothing about chickens being fried or uncles that loved you till she died.

Is that a real Roger Miller song or are you just making that up?

"The Tom Green County Fair" was a great song for him but he did not write it.

I would never do such a thing......you can verify it with an internet search. My brother-in-law was a HUGE Roger Miller fan and introduced me to his music when I was approximately 12-14 years old. Miller did struggle with an addiction to amphetamines for a while, and that song is probably from that period.

Ron,
I am truly sorry if I upset you with my post. It certainly wasn't my intention. I was just teasing you a little about the song because of it's crazy lyrics.

He did write rather odd songs but most of them were enjoyable on one level or another. I always liked his voice and thought he was a good entertainer.
Your brother-in-law had good taste in music...lol.

Hi Sevenof61,

Great choice....I love that song!

Welcome and I hope you enjoy your time here. Lots of nice people and good information on Gordon and his music.
Are you a longtime fan? Have you ever seen him in concert?

"Spin spin", would be the ultimate.
First song I ever heard from him. and would love to hear
him sing it today...45 years later...YES 45 YEARS later !!!

Re: if you could make Gord introduce one "obscure" song into his concert rotation?

These are all great suggestions. He should do a show just for us full of all these!

I'd add Long Way Back Home. A band I was in played that one every night for maybe the first three years of the seventies.

Oh, and definitely My Uncle Used to Love Me but She Died.....

I do miss Roger Miller.

Yes, I am a really longtime fan. I have seen Gord in concert about 15 times starting in the early 80s, from Wolf Trap in Virginia to an ampitheater in LA.

I am also the proud owner of a Martin D18-GL, number 7 of 61 :)

Re: if you could make Gord introduce one "obscure" song into his concert rotation?

It would never happen, of course, and it's not that obscure a song, but I'd love to hear "Mountains and Maryann"; I don't think he's got the range anymore, and of course Red is gone now and couldn't do his understated, but wonderful lead. Still, it's a great song, maybe one of his happiest and most upbeat. "All is well...."
