The first song I heard was "The Wreck" (surprise, surprise) in perhaps third grade when it came out. I made enough of a fuss about it that my parents gave me "Summertime Dream" for my birthday. It was the first LP I ever owned. "Race Among the Ruins" quickly became my favorite song.
"Summertime Dream" is also the only recording I have owned in LP, cassette and CD format. I have owned several in two formats, but only one in all three. |
Hi everyone,
It has been a while since i posted here. I was just 8 years old when I first heard " Beautiful" on the radio. My older brother was listening to it, I liked the melody to it and asked my brother who was the person singing. Ever since then I would listen to Lightfoot's music because there was somethng about the words and the music that I understood and could relate to. That is why when i first join this group,i said that my siblings thought I was an odd ball. I still love his music :) . Does anyone know if he will be doing any concerts this year? |

http://www.lightfoot.ca/2005.htm Oops Florian the link to the current year needs to be added:- http://www.lightfoot.ca/2006.htm Where you can see details of no less than 23 concerts already announced out of a mooted 35-40 this very year 3 of which as reported in another topic are already history. The next are this week in Niagara Falls see the topic "casino concert" There follows a number of February dates in Florida I see that you are in California I would have thought that following last year's 4 successful CA concerts Gord is likely to return there sometime this year but like the rest of us you will have to keep a watch on Wayne's site (or pollstar) to discover future dates as and when they are revealed I trust that helps John Fowles In the fall of the year of 1910 Daddy died by the rope down in cherokee bend. was back in '39 when I was one year old Of a long-forgotten year When the wildflowers did bloom In the forest and finally a strange result from a google search for "lightfoot lyrics year" Allegedly at:- http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm...endid=29382343 this remarkable lightfootfan:- "MySpace Profile - Gordon Lightfoot, 102 years old, Female, , Ontario, CA" Not the aging Queen Lighthead (Char),surely!!! No it is Ontario California not Canada. Thinks is this near the area of "North Ontario" in Cabaret?? [ January 23, 2006, 02:53: Message edited by: johnfowles ] |

I am not sure which of Gordon's songs was the first one I heard, probably Early Morning Rain, this thread has reminded me of something a good mate of mine said about a Lightfoot classic. Several years ago whilst serving in the RN I was on a ship alongside in Mayport Navy base in Florida. One night enjoying a drink in the CPO mess with my buddie, he checked out the juke box, came back and said, 'there is a Gordon Lightfoot record on there' I asked him 'which one' His reply, 'It is something like "The Wreck of The Englebert Humperdinck". I had a good chuckle over that. Sadly he was not converted. Preferring to remain loyal to Neil Diamond.

Like most of you on this site, the "first song ever I heard by GL" was the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Came on the radio one day, got blasted away by it, and just had to buy the album which it was on. After I purchased Summertimedream, I got to liking other songs as well. now I think I'm a full-fledged GL fan. (At least I hope so I am. :) )
