It was one of the best "Lightfoot" days ever..the ride to and from Orillia with Ron, chatting about all kinds of things and seeing the glorious autumn colours on the rolling hills just added to the excellent day. If the weather could be scripted it couldn't have been better than it was - perfect for the setting and sculpture of "GOLDEN LEAVES" to be unveiled. breathtaking. I'm still in awe of just how perfect everything was..

Another honour will be held Sunday to celebrate one of the city's favourite sons.

Officials from the city of Orillia along with the Mariposa Folk Foundation and figurative artist Timothy P. Schmalz will be at Tudhope Park to unveil Black Day in July - the second bronze leaf in a series of sculptures honouring Gordon Lightfoot.

Part of a large artistic project being led by Schmalz, the individual maple leaves, born of the principal monument, encapsulate songs written by the folk legend and are being installed along the Lightfoot Trail System in Orillia and at key locations across North America.

In 2015, the first leaf was installed together with the 13-foot bronze sculpture Golden Leaves to mark the 40th anniversary of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald that inspired the 1976 song written by Lightfoot.

Similarly, Black Day in July was created in anticipation of the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Detroit race riot.

The three sculptures within the park were donated to the city by the Rudolph P. Bratty Family Foundation.

The 1 p.m. unveiling is part of this weekend's Mariposa Folk Festival, a ticketed event, and will take place rain or shine.

Tickets can be purchased online at mariposafolk.com or at the Mariposa Folk Foundation Office at 10 Peter Street South.

thx for updates...oh, the article didn't mention The Way I Feel statue proposal

i guess the approach is to find a phrase within a GL song that has some sort of imagery that can be interpreted and portrayed... 29 church bells for the Wreck (well one bell, ringing 29 times... or 29x29 times.... ok, let's not go there :) ) ... a runway for Early Morning Rain ... anything goes... I like the Trilogy curved trestle as the crown to the whole concept.... i like the mini version of the statue that one can own for a $200 contribution... I'm glad these statues appear vandalism proof... these structures should outlive us all, as will the songs ...cheers
