This is the only one that caught my ear as being "quite good". Different yes, but worthy of mention. These guys are really having fun. Now for a disclaimer: I have no musical talent or knowledge whatsoever. I sound like an alley cat with asthma, and I wouldn't recognize a melody if it ran over me. Basically, I like what I like because I like it, and I can offer no other explanation. Yeah, there's some truly horrible stuff in the cover me sessions, and these folks are a lot braver than me to ever post something, but at least they have actually HEARD of Gordon Lightfoot! As a side note, my 12 year old has recently discovered the classic rock songs, and we are delighted in this wonderful change in his musical taste. His previous "taste" was contemporary radio. Oh God, the pain of it all... Now, if I can get him to listen to Gordon Lightfoot and Al Stewart, I'll really be pleased. :) |

Re: Cover Me Canada
The intro sounded a lot like CCR's Born on the Bayou.

Re: Cover Me Canada
You know, that's what music is all about... adapting songs to fit the musical style of generations . Our generation was more about acoustic guitars, folk, light rock. The new generation seems to be more about noise, absurdities, changes.

Re: Cover Me Canada
nice work, TG....you are always best dressed at McVeigh's and also at youtube!
yeah, those shades are quite nasty:cool: after sifting through lots of stuff that i thought was over self-indulgent, i think i found a nice bit of instrumental and vocal arranging (ie. "mistake") with just the right amount of poetic license and deviation from the original taken (ie. the minor chord instead of major works for me in the verses) the thing is, i think she's already been discovered...then again, i keep forgetting what the point of this show is (or the upcoming Canada's Got no-Talent;)) |
Re: Cover Me Canada
these cats really do have the best band logo
they should have played that sunday night mariposa a few years back, lol i like the tone of the harmony in the chorus.... terrific 'garage' feel to it, imo |

Re: Cover Me Canada
came across more solo artist studio productions, some slick, but in re-reading the gist of the premise i guess they want live band stuff
i like the video intro here and the handheld work...i guess my only knock is i don't fancy instrumental solos that are more of less the melody leads...i suppose that's why the signature solo on the GL recording resonates with me and a few million others they should just make a youtube channel for each of the 4 songs so we can just put one link to the Sundown covers...if nothing else, i'm glad this is boosting Gord popularity with the young'ns and middleaged'ns |
Re: Cover Me Canada
JJ, that has to be to worse Sundown solo I've ever heard! I'm not convinced the soloist has a clue how to play guitar. It just sounds like a bunch of random notes.
I've come to the conclusion that there is NOBODY who can play the lead part to Sundown like Terry could. And come to think of it, there is no one who can sing it as well as Gord did. Cathy |

the lead break does sound like a non-solo eh. my mild rant was actually honed in on the lead out. not sure why he wouldn't do some grundge derivative of the classic TC licks. anyhow I like the vid and The Hip flavour the rendition has I'm kinda glad this contest chooses to mess with Sundown rather than a slew of GL classics that are in my "look but don't touch" list:) |
Re: Cover Me Canada
You may have heard worse in your own dwelling, but at least you didn't record it and put it on You Tube.

some vid efforts i've appreciated but that's not what this is about...this audio effort grabbed me to a certain degree...i had been wondering what manny ramirez was doing now that his playing days are through a good chance i am heading to Centre Island myself today on the good ol' ferry |
Re: Cover Me Canada
And I didn't even know Manny could sing. LOL. He sure resembles Manny. I guess the old saying about everyone having a double is true.

Re: Cover Me Canada
And to think he's even singing without a big wad of chewing tobacco in his mouth.

Re: Cover Me Canada
Well August 19th was the date the finalists were to be notified as to their selection for the TV program next month. I wonder who got the nod for the Lightfoot song?

Re: Cover Me Canada
