whereas in the Wreck it's got that secondary pulse halfway through each measure 123 456 ....i hear this sort of compound time in Minstrel of the Dawn also

try scoring that intent using 3/4 time....you would need to use 1/8 notes and maybe even get into 1/16ths

hi Tim, interesting analogy (re whole words versus letters)
...it's very much like phonetics and how we speak in terms or emphasis, cadence, metre, whatever....way back, our band conductor explained 6/8 as a compound time signature

the example of the Wreck intro shown in 3/4 vs 6/8 is about as clear and visual as I could drum up ...i prefer the score in 3/4, with twice as many measures...quarter notes are easier on these eyes

Hi jj,

that's what I get for skimming I guess. Must have bleeped right over your explanation or I would have said something like "what jj said." I really do think that 6/8 tunes have a distinct "feel" though. Consider irish jigs for example. I can't think of them as being in 3/4 time.

love this phrase, Tim...i'm going to borrow it and see if i can raise a few eyebrows by slipping it into some light conversation around the watercooler:)

for some aural differentiation, an example of each:
