Hey Gitchigumee Congratulations !!!:clap: When you feel it's done, let us know and then anyone of us can burn those tracks in the order you placed them, and have another Gord CD, in your honor. {The Gitchigumee project}... :) This was a great idea Gitch...:clap::) |

I will not be satisfied until one other song is included, so we'll see if anyone comes up with it. Jesse, I very much like the photo of Gord on the cover. Thanks for the warm & fuzzies everyone. Here's the new list: 1. Softly (Gitchigumee) 2. Thank You For The Promises (Jesse Joe) 3. If I Could (RM) 4. If You Need Me (Claudia) 5. The Last Time I Saw Her Face (mnmouse) 6. Now and Then (GJA) 7. Inspiration Lady (brink-) 8. Fine as Fine Can Be (joveski) 9. Song for a Winter's Night (Brannah) 15. The First Time Ever I Saw Her Face (johnfowles) I'd be interested in more info regarding the "Anything For Love" album (words by Gordon Lightfoot, music by David Foster). Here I go again showing my ignorance (please be kind). |

Re: A New "Lightfoot Lovesongs" CD
But then...is that photo not of an albumn cover?
And if it is a photo of an existing album, then who sings the songs if only the words are GL's and the music is DF's? And why would GL be on the cover if he wasn't the one singing the darn songs?:eek::eek: OHHHHH... it's a photo from sheet music isn't it? Light bulb! |
Re: A New "Lightfoot Lovesongs" CD
Well back in the day.......singles (or 45 rpms) would be released with artwork/photos. Maybe Jesse Joe can say whether or not this is the actual single sleeve that was released. I always just waited for the album to come out. But it could be a sheet music photo......or it could be a photo-shopped picture.
There is no "Anything for Love" album. |
Re: A New "Lightfoot Lovesongs" CD
It is a photo found on Google, and belongs on Wayne's Site, www.lightfoot.ca for the single, 'Anything For Love'. Lyrics by Gordon Lightfoot / Music by David Foster :)

Re: A New "Lightfoot Lovesongs" CD
Your very welcome Ron...
But you may also be right when you say; {"Well back in the day.......singles (or 45 rpms) would be released with artwork/photos. But it could be a sheet music photo......or it could be a photo-shopped picture."} There is no "Anything for Love" album, and that photo is not an album cover... I too would wait for the album to come out. I do not own that particular single. :) |

Re: A New "Lightfoot Lovesongs" CD
OK I expect everybody has at one time or another wanted to burn their own favo(u)rite's CD and as far as I know it is perfectly legal to make your own compilation CD from favourite tracks on CDs that you own. but not to then distribute it of course. Now as anybody who has tried to make such a compilation, whether on a CD or a cassette tape, as the redoubtable Sober Rodent once reported on at L E N G T H, knows the problem is totting up the Total Running Time in order to decide which tracks will fit on a chosen tape or nowadays a standard 74 minute blank CD. (In passing note that IF your favourite track is Beethoven's 9th symphony you are in luck because the reason why the length capacity of a CD is 74min is that that is the "outer limit" of the time it takes for an orchestra to play that masterpiece.
at least that is what the Compact Disk Wiki would have you believe!! I was sure there must be some program to tell you this without having to create a specialised spreadsheet I knew that Nero burning actually helpfully tells you the TRT of a selection as you load it up viz:- http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/mp3_quality/nero.jpg But what I really wanted a method that could be used earlier in the process, besides other burning programs work differently, for example Roxio tells you the remaining time on the CD after you select a group of audio tracks I frequently googled to find something but the best I found was a Java applet that entailed you you typing in each track time to give you a running value for the Total Runnng Time as it were. However this was not acceptable to me for two good reasons.

it would be easy to make a typo
as I have reported with regard to the Chat Room Java applet my computer and other late model PC browser versions cannot display Java without installing a large Java Runtime program I decided to try another searching approach having recalled the good results I sometimes got by using an earlier version of the ASK search engine which emphasised and encouraged you to enter your search requirement as a colloqial question Therefore I simply googled for this question:- "how do I calculate the total running time of a folder of mp3s" As you can readily see the result was astonishing a veritable bullseye in one http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/mp3_quality/google.jpg Of the possible 166,000 to sift through top of the list was this forum result "Google Answers: utility to calculate total playing time for all ... MP3 file and the total playing time for the entire folder or CD. _MP3INDX.EXE may be run from anywhere, including a CD-ROM. Simply double click it's icon or" at:- http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=295146 which contained links to not one but a pair of free items:-
the first was a doddle as mp3indx.exe turned out to be a ginormous file of a staggering 64,000 bytes whereas the mp3-mixwer .exe program was far harder to locate to download and was a very much more complicated program of 2.36MB thequoted download page as shown above is incorrect but http://www.audiotoolers.com/ is however worth visiting as it has much info on digitising vinyl albums but the home page of mp3-mixer is actually at:- http://www.mmpx.nl/hsoft/ with another link to downlod it Anyway I had noted in the blurb for mp3indx a reference to creating a batchfile (*.bat). and rather relished the challenge of renewing my handling of such old DOS files since for most of the 10 years that I ran and developed my UK company's accounts department we relied on a very compact and adaptable DOS accounts program and in order to do several tasks I had taught myself a great deal about batch files However I quickly found that simply pasting the relatively tiny mp3indx.exe file in the same folder as a selected group of mp3s and clicking on it there gave the desired information voila:- http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/mp3_qua...llmore_trt.jpg OK enough for you to read today I'll be back ASAP with a further report after I have ripped the existing list, with a guide on how to do so (hint the original free Musicmatch Jukebox not the inferior replacement Yah..bloody..Hoo Jukebox and will have checked its TRT then we can see what room is left. here endeth today's history and auditory lesson gals and boyos "Sir" John Fowles BT I'll be back ASAP with an alternative artwork proposal for the resulting CD front insert , as I too am not very enamoured of "Anything For Love" nor of that particular "Belt and Braces" picture. BTW the Americans rather quaintly call what in the UK are "braces" " suspenders" which to all red blooded Englishmen is an entirely different article of female clothing with pronounced erotic connotations. OK Ruth you asked for it found by image googling for "ladies suspender belt uk" I originally displayed a picture showing what such an item looks like but have been nicely asked to remove it and instead provide just the link to it which is:- http://www.enjoy.co.uk/acatalog/12M.jpg I was going to display a distinctly more erotic picture at:- http://www.argoth.co.uk/acatalog/hnrh1150.jpg but then I thought that would offend a few here so I had plumped for the still somewhat erotic pic originallty displayed of an allegedly "Edible Candy Suspender Belt" Sorry everybody |
Re: A New "Lightfoot Lovesongs" CD
John, I will not even pretend that I understand all that you say, however, I understand enough to know that you have figured out a way to fit the songs onto the CDs. Wonderful! I am probably not the best person to figure out which order is best, so maybe someone will come forward who has the expertise needed. I am not quite prepared to finalize the Love Songs CD, and as I have stated before, I'm waiting for at least one other song to be nominated which belongs on that disk.
As to the artwork for the album cover, yes I think we should keep working on it. This is SO MUCH FUN! Thanks everyone! This is going to be a wonderful Christmas present to ourselves! Happy Thanksgiving to all the my fellow Americans!! P.S. And yes, I envisioned Gord with braces on his teeth when I first read that...even though I have heard of the suspenders explanation before. I am however, very interested in seeing a picture of the "female clothing with pronounced erotic connotations" which is the English version of suspenders. Oh my goodness! That is bloody funny! |
Re: A New "Lightfoot Lovesongs" CD
oh great, thanks John grrrrrrrr. Now I have this picture in my mind of Gord wearing both suspenders and braces!!

Re: A New "Lightfoot Lovesongs" CD
John, your post about how to choose tracks to fit nicely on a CD shows that you have done a lot of research on the subject. I think, though, there may be a simpler way.
If you take a look at the CD-Recordable FAQ on this page: http://www.cdrfaq.org/faq01.html#S1-5 you will see that a recordable CD will commonly hold either 74 or 80 minutes, translating to 650MB and 700MB respectively. (More specific information can be found at http://www.cdrfaq.org/faq07.html#S7-6 ) Knowing the amount of space required for 74 minutes (650MB), you can determine if your chosen tracks will fit by: 1. go to the file folder/directory in your file browser 2. highlight the tracks you want to record (hold down Ctrl key while selecting each track with the mouse or Ctrl-A for all of them) 3. right click on one of the highlighted items This will bring up a menu; choose "Properties". Look at the size of the selected files on the display that pops up. If the total will fit on your CD, you are all set! No need to install any programs or run a separate batch file. It seems you are using Nero Express' My Audio CD to display the selected tracks. In their wisdom to make things "foolproof", Roxio has chosen to display the audio tracks by time, rather than size (although changing this may be an option for the program.) In the end, the total size of the files is what matters. Time notwithstanding, they will still have to fit on the CD and those are written byte-by-byte until the disk is full. However, if "time" is important to you, then the programs you're using seem to fit your needs. (By the way, see http://www.cdrfaq.org/faq02.html#S2-29 for the background behind why the standard length of CDs is 74 minutes long!) Looking forward to the final list! Thanks Gitchigumee! |
Re: A New "Lightfoot Lovesongs" CD
If it's not too late, I'll suggest Tim's second choice "Go My Way".

For the artwork, I think our guy to ask would be, zoneranger... ??
Now hang on a flippin' minute J-J. It was my idea to create artwork for GG's album and I have other pressing work for Z-R to accomplish!! OK Rick Many thanks for showing the two IYCRMM offerings. This is to say that although your efforts are very much appreciated now in my zoneranger folder I have 31 items http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfo...eranger/31.jpg I think you will agree that such an impresive gallery display would look much better if it were able to be a symmetrical 6 by 6 so could I trouble you for another five please??!! Sorry to be a pain in the you know where John P.S I'll be tackling the requested "Love Songs" artwork as soon as this Thanksgiving weekend is over, as I have the basic design already done in my head, OK?? |
Re: A New "Lightfoot Lovesongs" CD
Ok John, I should have said zoneranger or John Fowles. Whatever, go for it. :)

Re: A New "Lightfoot Lovesongs" CD
In Tim's honor, Go My Way. Any song that is a favorite of Tim's deserves to be included.
And yes, that is the cover from the single of Anything For Love. I ought to know. I have it. I may have all the singles, but I am not certain. I spent a lot of time (and money) at Ebay back in the late 1990s and early 2000s! As a historical note, in one of his radio interviews (1968 or 1969), Skip Weshner christened three songs Gord recorded a "trilogy" of sorts, about the phases of love. The songs were: First Time, Softly and Last Time, in that order. I suggest that you place them on the CD in that order, rather than keeping the set list in the order the songs were nominated. Hey, be a producer and order all the songs after careful thought (and a few more listens). Of course, we can each do that, when we burn the CD ... Happy Thanksgiving everybody! |
Re: A New "Lightfoot Lovesongs" CD
Thank's for clarifying this Valerie. It's funny but when the question came up, I thought of you for having the answer. I almost did ask; Val are you around? Guess I should have... lol Anyway thank's again. :)
