and now for some Ebay UK GL items The arch bootlegger in the UK,who this time around is calling himself "buzzfledder", has put up for Ebay (UK) auction the first time that I am aware of a CD of THE FOLKFEST BENEFIT, NEW YORK, 1987 http://cgi.ebay.com/Gordon-Lightfoot...QQcmdZViewItem http://i10.ebayimg.com/03/i/07/08/42/e0_1_b.JPG this joins a concurrant auction of an audio only CD OF THE 1979 PBS Soundstage television special from 1979 http://cgi.ebay.com/GORDON-LIGHTFOOT...QQcmdZViewItem http://i23.ebayimg.com/01/i/07/00/93/bc_1_b.JPG plus two other of his GL auctions now ended the 1973 PBS Chicago special again audio only http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GORDON-LIGHTFO...QQcmdZViewItem http://i15.ebayimg.com/01/i/06/fa/6b/f0_1_b.JPG and another CD cobbled together from a radio broadcast of another concert the 1969 Charlottetown PEI Summer festival as broadcast by the CBC ON 5 oCTOBER 1969 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GORDON-LIGHTFO...QQcmdZViewItem http://i17.ebayimg.com/05/i/06/f7/35/de_1_b.JPG There were no bids for this one so no doubt he'll try again in due course to make his money out of Gord and some time ago The Two Tones Plus (the plus being the two songs on the lone Two Tones single Lessons in Love and Sweet Polly) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TWO-TONES-GORD...QQcmdZViewItem http://i11.ebayimg.com/02/i/06/ea/7a/71_1_b.JPG John Fowles all very relevant in the light of the old mp3 topic resurrected by Mr Suber the other day [ May 04, 2006, 09:49: Message edited by: johnfowles ] |

He must have had very bittle nails that year see Bru's breathless recount of how he nearly sat on her lap at London's Royal Albert Hall when he dropped down into the audience to cadge an emery board see:- http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb...=000069#000024 "Buzzfledder"'s new auction is at:- http://cgi.ebay.com/Gordon-Lightfoot...QQcmdZViewItem http://i10.ebayimg.com/03/i/07/0a/86/5d_1_b.JPG Those who are fortunate to already have this will know that it contains very nice "Live" versions of the following unreleased songs Tennessee Stud Pleasures of the Night Divorce Country Style Partners and an earlier live Stone Cold Sober this 1974 concert has been discussed here before at:- http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/001842.html http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000069.html It all goes to prove how fastidious Gord is which means that he probably strongly disapproves of the existance and ready disemination by means of mp3s of many unauthorised gems John Fowles Oh God the pride of man broken in the dust again Sometimes a broken dream Will make you sad or make you mean Lord abide, let us stem the tide Of broken dreams |
And to complete his collection of unauthorised offerings yesterday he added this strange compilation 2-cd set

Just as Walter (broderstone) is hung up his Billboard chart positions,so was I in my later schooldays obsessed with the UK hit parade,Our favo(u)rite source of information in those days was the http://www.nme.com/layout/nme_logo.gif
no not the "enemy" but the "New Musical Express" a weekly Black and White tabloid publication described by answers.com as:- "The New Musical Express (better known as the NME) is a music magazine in the UK which has been published weekly since March 1952." I still have a few cuttings especially from 1959 with details of that year's plane crash near Clear Lake Iowa that took the life of my then musical hero Buddy Holly.Fast forward to 1971 I was then back in the UK, having become a Lighthead in a big way, and had of course bought the IYCRMM LP, but news of Gord was to put it mildly scant. All the more interesting therefore to be reminded that in 1971 the NME actually had an article on Gord in an issue I sadly missed but possibly Bruna has squirelled away?? This has just come up on ebay again at:- http://cgi.ebay.com/Gordon-Lightfoot...QQcmdZViewItem http://www.rockmem.com/NMEcut/0711.jpg John Fowles I recently found that the NME had itself been the subject of an American University "Class Project" see Contents listing for 1953-1969 at:- http://www.skidmore.edu/~gthompso/br...NME/index.html Now Skidmore University is in Saratoga Springs, New York home of the Caffe Lena and two great GL tribute band concerts see:- http://mageenet.org/LightfootTributeBand/home.shtml http://mageenet.org/LightfootTribute...C00130-400.jpg of note is this that I found on http://www.skidmore.edu/~gthompso/br...E/nme6512.html where I read a note from December 1965:- "American folk stars on February tour [The Ian Campbell Folk Group headlines a tour with Gordon Lightfoot and Ian and Sylvia.]" 1971 is of course ouside the timeframe of 1953-1969 that the above referenced page covers [ May 10, 2006, 08:32: Message edited by: johnfowles ] |
Gord looks really cool in that above b & w picture John. I think the long hair would have been enough, skip the beard & 'stache. :)

another nice new Ebay item yesterday a poster for "Saturday November 24th" (the seller said "This is an unknown year promotional concert poster") but using the Javascript "Find any day for a given date:" at:- http://cornish-family.netfirms.com/findday.htm or http://www.kernow.notlong.com (Kernow is Cornwall,UK if you did not know) that was either 1973 or 1979 and per:- http://www.lightfoot.ca/1979.htm Gord did not do such a concert in 1979 so 1973 it must have been http://members.sparedollar.com/CG707...TINCONCERT.JPG John Fowles Jenney was that a CT concert you got to back in your pre-stalking days?? |
This is very interesting Sir John, Im constantly looking for old Lightfoot performances like the soundstage one, I have that on VHS which I recorded in 1980 on a PBS station from Maine. The sound is terrible, and it last only 1 hour. I remember when he introduces his then new song, "ON THE HIGH SEAS", he must have been playing a joke on the audience as he says, " This one is called 'On The Tv."

nd now something for the Ladies on auction from the UK currently under 5 quid.
Who will be the gallant to buy this for Bru??? (it's not Too Much To Lose I might say but won't) at http://cgi.ebay.com/GORDON-LIGHTFOOT...QQcmdZViewItem http://i21.ebayimg.com/01/i/07/1a/62/8e_1_b.JPG Loverly John Bru and there you were thinking that nobody else had even heard of Gord over there |
Interesting a GL neck chain. But what's next. GL bedsheets? I'm sure any woman fan of GL would like that!
|
I don't know, I think that necklace is kinda cool.
|
I like that necklace, John.
Now ... is it too much to lose ... ;) |
Bru, we can start a bidding war on it, LOL!!
|
but then one of us will have to pay megabucks!
LOL |
John said it was 5 quid. How much is that? 5 pounds?
|
yes, 5 pounds, at the moment.
|
Bru, am I correct in thinking that "quid" is slang for "pounds" - similar to how we use "bucks" to mean "dollars"?

A recently posted auction gives UK fans a rare chance to acquire the excellent Canadian 3-CD box set that includes all 5
United Artist albums:- http://cgi.ebay.com/GORDON-LIGHTFOOT...QQcmdZViewItem or http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GORDON-LIGHTFO...QQcmdZViewItem http://i4.ebayimg.com/01/i/07/24/d8/0c_1_b.JPG http://i10.ebayimg.com/04/i/07/27/26/33_1.JPG I don't think I have ever seen it on ebay.co.uk before, and doubt that it was ever on sale In the UK. My own copy was bought in 1994 in Montreal by an English friend visiting Canada who was armed with a comprehensive list of all albums (vinyl and CD) that I at that time owned, in addition to this box set she also found to my delight the 1993-issued Waiting For You CD which in those primitive pre-internet days I had never even heard of. Fortunately by 1998 I had internet access and heard of APPT in time to grab the solitary copy on sale in the HMV store on Oxford Steet London on June 21st John Fowles in reply to Janice's query about the slang term "quid" I found this site:- http://www.businessballs.com/moneyslanghistory.htm which states amongst other theories that "The slang money expression 'quid' seems first to have appeared in late 1600's England, derived from Latin (quid meaning 'what', as in 'quid pro quo' - 'something for something else'). " I have previously written about the pound sign itself (£) on the Newsgroup see:- http://groups.google.com/group/alt.m...b53798b?hl=en& Noow regarding the US slang term "buck" two entertaining theories are on:- http://entspire.com/newsletters/orig...ord%202-03.htm |
And now one for the underpriviledged hooligan wannabee concert goers down under on auction from Brisbane is this at:-
http://cgi.ebay.com/GORDON-LIGHTFOOT...QQcmdZViewItem http://i12.ebayimg.com/04/i/07/24/50/15_1_b.JPG this bill is billed according to the seller as "1975 ORIGINAL STREET POSTER" but September 19th was on a Thursday in 1974 when Gord did indeed play in Sydney and obviously survived!! John Fowles I found this topical picture http://www.majicat.com/photos/Photo_image2/1ozcozrt.JPG caption:- Cats' first Austalian concert was at the Hordern Pavilion |
today's crop incudes an interesting old 1967 poster
http://cgi.ebay.com/VERY-RARE-GORDON...QQcmdZViewItem http://i15.ebayimg.com/04/i/07/34/ec/94_1_b.JPG I cannot read all the text on it but fortunately the seller says it is "Poster text is: Gordon Lightfoot 8:30 till 11 P.M. Thursday September 14 University Hall Wolfville 1.50 advanced tickets student building rear" And yesterday a Warner Bros attempt to muscle in on the United Artists regurgitation antics with their own compilation note Made in 1981 i.e. released after GG and GG2 and this example attributed to Germany but I recall seeing this on sale in the UK in both vinyl and cassette versions http://cgi.ebay.com/GORDON-LIGHTFOOT...QQcmdZViewItem http://i16.ebayimg.com/03/i/07/33/d3/de_1_b.JPG Track listing early morning rain the wreck of edmund fitzgerald carefree highway minstrel of the dawn rainy day people sundown summer side of life cold on the shoulder endless wire if you could read my mind canadian railroad trilogy if there`s a reason cotton jenny song for a winter`s night daylight katy old dan`s record me and bobby mcgee the circle is small |
