By the way, the "North Ontario" mentioned in the song appears from the context to be Ontario, California, although I'm sure it had a double meaning for Gord.

Or, it could have been On-Tear-I-O, Oregon(which is near the Or-EE-Gone border with Idaho, and is relatively North)...being an Oregonian, I'm sure that's what he meant, just as I'm sure that he was thinking of me when he wrote "Song for a Winter's Night"...I wish!!!

we've had a few yuk-yuk's with "Cabaret", but the more i hear it, it really is a great song. that whole intro with the elec.guitar work is wonderful, but so is the whole album. i really love that instr. break in "Nous Vivons Ensemble". it's 1 of his more ambitious records. he went back to simplicity on "Don Quixote".

i've also listened to this song a bit more since this thread came up. i love it as well. it has that feeling of sadness and happiness in it. that piano bit after "i hope you find your rainbows end" does it for me.

on a more technical note, is it safe to assume that he plays the slow part of the song with a capo on the 3rd fret and then as he cracks open the can (we need not go there again!), he takes the capo off and plays open strings?. i always do this and it sound really good. it depends on whether anyone's seen him do it live (if he ever has done it live!)

I asked Gordon last week at Early Morning Studio about the beer. He thinks it was a Carling Black Label and that they had several that day. The guy just recorded it and they dubbed it in over the track.

the opening passage to "Cabaret" is a great thing to doodle around with on a rainy afternoon (acoustic gitar or piano, whatever). i turn it into a lengthy jazz workout. thank god, you'll never hear it, but it's a lot of fun anyway! (as long as no-one's listening)

I'm sorry but I have to comment on this,

I really like Cabaret, it's one of my Favourite GL songs, it creates a very strong image in my mind of a singer / songwriter ( Gord) plying their trade at out of the way venues in California,( he finishes his act, pulls a ring top, has a good long drink, then starts dreaming of his family and friends back home in North Ontario.

I was really happy with this vision, then Derek says its not a ring top, its a zippo lighter, then John Fowles says its not North Ontario, Canada, its some suburb of LA, wow, did my world fall apart at this point !!.

Now people are saying that it is a ring top, Gords even saying what brand of beer it is, even Derek is accepting that its not a zippo, but still people, 2M2L and Brenda are saying its not North Ontario, Canada, but California, or maybe Oregon, but even though I can find Ontario in other places, I can only find one North Ontario, so, I'm happy my original vision is intact, and I'll keep dreaming of Kathy in North Bay, and continue to Smile..

Upon closer listening, it sure sounds like opening a beer.

But until I read about it, I always thought it was the sound of clicking on a microphone. Picture a lounge singer strolling up to the mike in some forlorn cabaret, with the unprofessionalism of turning on a noisy mike. I know that's not what it is, but I still enjoy the irony of that mental picture.

when asking questions such as this it behooves you to do a modicum of research on this forum first. Had you taken the trouble to search for "cabaret" you would undoubtedly have found this old topic which I am replying to now to bring it back to the top and to augment Char's reply to your new topic.
Please note Cathy's reply above (on August 24 2002) in which she quoted in full an earlier reply by Al Watchman . his reply is one of the many postings Al deleted when he previously withdrew from this forum. I have now checked my Vinyl copy of SSOL and there is no mention on the sleeve of the mythical "special effects" guy (Rich Fortier) nor in the front CD insert either,
