"Softly" indeed difficult to sing especially the original version. Gord seems to have some trouble now hitting the high notes. CRT I notice the "round the Eastern Shore" part he can't get as high as he used to. Still enjoy his music no matter how his voice sounds.

Does he sing CRT on a different note now? The same as the one on the GL Tribue album?

He still sings it in the same key, but he alters the melody a little to avoid the high notes.

I never did get a second choice up in this topic.

Another toughie of Goron's for me to sing is,"The Watchman's Gone". Not because of curse words (which is a small part of it) but the key he sings in on that one,is practically consistent through the whole song.

Very difficult.

Tattoo needs pretty good breath control in parts; I have to sneak in a quick break that Gord doesn't (or didn't - haven't heard him do that one lately.)

Singers have to practice taking deeper breaths and all. That may be why he can sing longer without breathing.

The tune is repetitious throughout the song, and the only way past that is to emotionally build up to the verse where the ship sinks, and then slowly bring it back down and try to emphasize the sadness of the last verse. It can be a very compelling song if done correctly, and a very boring song if done incorrectly.

Love what you wrote there Cathy and also learned a thing or two. RJ

"If You Could Read My Mind." That song offers some heavy duty breathing challenges for me and I'm still working around it after all these years. Sometimes I tend to forget, or lose track just when to take the right breaths at the proper time. It's just that I love the song so much that I honestly don't really care if I don't sound out the notes perfectly because for me, the ending is never too hard to take. RJ.

"Race Among the Ruins" is another real "breath control" song. I have to really concentrate or I'll fade on "apron strings you pass."

I agree with Cathy on "Wreck." Additionally, if you play the song solo, you've got to vary the guitar's dynamics too. I try to change the guitar's volumn along with my voice, sometimes leaving my voice the same, but bring the guitar up a bit before I change my voice. A good place is on the line. "The wind in the wires."

"Seven Island Suite" still has a couple of rough spots for me. The whole "chicken to go" line takes practice.

I like singing "Soul is the Rock" but I haven't figured a good way to do the 'rain on the rock' repeats solo.

Welcome Seattle.

I play Wreck in dropped D, with a variation of Terry's lead, coupled with the low D note throughout. It sounds very Maritimish.
And it puts the song in my singing voice.

Well "The Auctioneer" is pretty hard to sing, but it's still lots 'o fun to try! When I first heard Auctioneer, I was certain this must've been Gordon's "back-up skill" in case the whole singing/songwriting gig didn't pan out. LOL. He would've made a good auctioneer, indeed.

I know the origianl version of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is heavy on the vibrato,so that's adefinete no-no for me. :) Unless you all want your ears piered the hard way! LOL! :D

I can do "The Soul Is The Rock" though,it's in my range. ;)

"If There's a Reason" from "Endless Wire" always seemed to be a tough song to sing. Lots of tension/anger in the lyrics with notes being held/yelled out "If there's a chanceeeeeeeee!!" "Give it a tryyyyyyyyyyyy!" "If you should need meeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!" Great song!

Probably ,"The Ghost Of Cape Horn."

But I do agree somewhat with, Tom. "If There's A Reason." You got have great lungs to follow him on the record, with that one.

Rainbow Trout might be another one. You have to sing it kind of high.

I'm not sure if that's singing or yelling!

Sounds like he's out by his barn yellin' at his ol' lady about wanting to go trippin' in his mellow yellow canoe. His wife is probably telling him "No!" :) It's most likely Gord's hardest rockin' song!

Another hard song to sing is "Forgive Me Lord"...it's very hard for some to pray...let alone sing about humbling ourselves & asking for forgiveness. Pride keeps us from singing this song!

Make my world a better place to be
Remove these chains and set me free
Give my face a different point of view
Forgive us Lord if we run to you

If you love me
Make my world a better place to be
Remove these chains and set me free
Give my life one reason to begin
Forgive me Lord for I have sinned
Give my life one reason to begin
Forgive me Lord for I have sinned
