Crazy as this sounds, I think the fingerpicker's high e is strung an octave high. In any case, the guitars have a very bright tone.

well, it's just a matter of selecting the right gauge. You wouldn't want to try it with an .11 for example. But I was thinking you could do it with a banjo string, maybe the high g drone of a 5-string banjo for instance. But you're right, you have to be careful with that kind of thing. I always get a little nervous when I retune to play some open-tuned song, although I find injuries to the neck to not be the problem so much as destroying brand new strings by too much tensioning.
