Gordon Lightfoot to make return to the Royal Albert Hall after a 35 year wait
By Matt Griffin - May 13th, 2015Share
Music

Legendary Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot will make a long-awaited return to the Royal Albert Hall on 24 May 2016 as part of his first UK tour since 1985.

After 50 years of hit making and with international album sales well into the multi-millions, Lightfoot resides with some very exclusive company atop the list of music’s all-time greats and has has seen his songs recorded and performed by the likes of Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Eric Clapton, Glen Campbell, Johnny Cash and Barbara Streisand.

Amongst his vast song catalogue are such immortals as Early Morning Rain, If You Could Read My Mind (watch below), Carefree Highway and Sundown.

In 2012 Lightfoot was presented with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal by the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, before being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame just months later.

The tour will feature Gordon Lightfoot’s best-known hits as well as deep album cuts for the die-hard fanatics, all woven together with some of the singer’s own behind-the-scenes stories and personal anecdotes from his historic 50-year musical career.

This 2016 concert will mark the acclaimed Canadian songwriter’s seventh appearance at London’s Royal Albert Hall after performing at the venue annually between 1971 and 1975, and most recently on 18 May 1981.

In a recent Reddit AMA, Lightfoot singled out the Hall as one of his favourite venues to play, and he was also included in Sir Peter Blake’s spectacular Appearing at the Royal Albert Hall mural – see if you can spot him..!

Tickets for Gordon Lightfoot at the Royal Albert Hall go on general sale at 10am on Friday 15 May.

Prices range from £38.20 – £68.80 (including fees) and will be available online via www.royalalberthall.com, or by calling the venue Box Office on 020 7589 8212.

Still amazed! I wonder why this is happening now after 35 years?! Maybe his marriage has given him some new impetus! Be nice if it extended to some new recordings. Been to Toronto 5 times in the last 10 years, great that he will be a bus ride away next year!

Just ordered 2 tickets for Birmingham 27th May, can't wait. Any one coming over and do not want to pay out for an expensive hotel, I can put a few people up. Down on south coast. Near Portsmouth. Private message me.

Early this morning I bought The Sunday Times from the local shop as usual. The Culture section contains an advert for the tour. I have Royal Albert Hall and Southend-on-Sea tickets, but it still seems slightly surreal.

A HUGE thanks for the advance information here which allowed me to book tickets 2 minutes after the box office at Birmingham (UK) opened. So I'll be there in the middle of the 5th row of the stalls (1st few rows you have to look up a bit).

Because Paul failed to scan and display the advert I tried without success to find it online .. but I did find

http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/02/19/gordon-lightfoot-lives (http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/02/19/gordon-lightfoot-lives/[/URL]) which no doubt Char has already referenced here, but I don't remember seeing the final comment before so I thought it was worth displaying now
"On Thursday, the Canadian news media (not to mention the general population of the Twitterverse) was abuzz with apparent news that Mr. Lightfoot, 71, the smooth-voiced singer-songwriter of"Sundown" and “Carefree Highway,” had died while on tour."
A little article that ends knowledgably with
"Mr. Lightfoot, meanwhile, has walked away like a movie star who gets burned in a three-way script, whatever that means."

John, thanks for your post about the RAH brochure. I just went to the city and got it. It is exactly as described. Coincidentally, I bought my copy of I Wish You Good Spaces from The Bookman about 20 years ago.

I hope all is well with you.

John, I have scanned the RAH brochure and sent the scans to Char. The brochure can then appear under 'UK Concert Programmes' on the Corfid homepage. Thanks Char.
